Patong is a popular beach town located on the west coast of Phuket, 40km south of Phuket International Airport and 14km west of Phuket Old town. It is just right south of Kamala and north of Karon Beach.

The heart of Patong is Bangla Walking Street, which is the nightlife hub of Phuket. Patong Beach is the main beach in Patong. Nearby beaches include Kalim Beach, Tri Trang Beach, and Freedom Beach.

The town is also home to Jungcelon Mall, which is one of the largest malls on Phuket. It is home to several night markets like Banzaan, OTOP, and Malin Plaza.

Why Staying in Patong Beach?

1. Legendary Nightlife

If you come to Phuket to party, Patong Beach is the best place to stay. The town is known as the nightlife hub of Phuket and is packed with bars, nightclubs, go-go bars, and live music. The infamous Bangla Walking Street is the red light district and the heart of the nightlife in Patong.

2. Central Location

Patong has a pretty central location in the west coast of Phuket. It is a convenience base to explore most beaches on the west coast and the historic old town on the east coast.

Famous beaches like Karon, Kata, and Kamala are just a few km away from Patong. Other places like Promthep Cape, Nai Harn, Surin, and Bang Tao Beach are also within reasonable distance from Patong.

3. Good Beaches

Patong has a 3km long coast line with white sand and clean water. If you stay in Patong, you can easily walk to Patong Beach for swimming, sunbathing, chilling, and enjoying watersport activities like jetskiing.

Within a few minutes drive away from Patong, you can also explore several beautiful secluded beaches like Tri Trang Beach, Paradise Beach, and Freedom Beach.

4. Good Shopping Malls and Night Markets

As a major tourist town in Phuket, Patong is a great destination for shopping and exploring the night markets. The town is home to Jungcelon Mall, which is one of the biggest shopping malls on the island. You can shop for both luxury products including both international and local brands.

While other towns have one or none, Patong itself has three major night markets. These markets, Banzaan, OTOP, and Malin Plaza, are great places to do bargain shopping and try local street food.

Downside of Staying in Patong Beach

Patong Beach is a vibrant and convenient place to stay in Phuket, especially if you want to be in the middle of the action. It is ideal for partygoers, solo travelers, and those who want to enjoy nightlife, shopping, and easy access to a wide range of tourist amenities.

However, Patong does come with downsides. It’s crowded, noisy, and highly commercialized, often lacking the authentic Thai atmosphere.

The nightlife can also be overwhelming, and not well-suited for families or travelers looking for relaxation. It is a popular area so streets are often congested, especially in the evening.

Best areas to stay in Patong Beach

Patong is the area that includes the 3 km-long Patong Beach Road, along with three other main roads running parallel to it: Ratuthit Road, Road 4055, Nanai Road, and Road 2036. The distance from Beach Road to the furthest inland Road 2036 is around 1.5 km.

These roads are connected to each other by smaller alleys. The most famous alley is the 350m long road connecting Patong Beach Road and Ratuthit Road. This street is the heart of Patong’s nightlife and separates the beach into two areas: Northern Patong and Southern Patong.

In addition to Patong itself, you can consider staying in nearby neighboring beaches such as Kalim or Tri Trang Beach. These beaches offer a quieter atmosphere but just within a few minutes drive from the nightlife heart of Patong.

My personal experience staying in Patong

U Sabai Living Hotel

I stayed in the U Sabai Hotel for a few nights. It is a budget-friendly 3-star hotel located near  Nanai Road, which is a relatively central area of Patong. It is close to everything and is walking distance from Banzaan Night Market, Jungcelon Mall, Bangla Walking Street, and the Bangla Boxing Stadium.

My room at U Sabai Living Hotel
My room at U Sabai Living Hotel

My room is a standard double room with a huge comfortable bed and a large window. The room has all necessary amenities like a mirror, cupboard, mini fridge with snacks and drinks.

The bathroom is also spacious and clean. The hotel has an elevator, so it was convenient to carry the suitcase up and down to the room.  I think it is a good option for solo travelers and couples who want a budget stay, private room, and central location.

Black Pantera Hostel

I traveled to Phuket in the high season at around the end of January and booked my accommodation very spontaneously, just a few days before my arrival. There aren’t many hotels available for my budgets and needs at the time of my booking.

Black Pantera Hostel
Black Pantera Hostel

I was a solo traveler looking for some budget and midrange place to stay. I can stay in the dorm room in a hostel and don’t mind paying a little bit more for a private room. Since it’s the high season, most hotels are fully booked, and the ones that are available are either overpriced or not great.

Black Pantera Hostel was available and I booked it for one night. The hotel was in a central location, on a small alley close to the Rat Uthit Road. It was easy to walk everywhere from the hotel including the Bazaan Market, Bangla Walking Street, Jungcelon, and Patong Beach.

The room was alright with basic dorm beds, curtains, and a bathroom. The facilities, like the bed and mattress, weren’t the most comfortable, but they were acceptable for a one-night stay. The room was a bit cold.

My room was on a high floor, which can be possible for those with heavy luggages. I had a scooter and the parking was quite limited at the time of my stay.
