Best Areas & Beaches to Stay in Koh Samet
Koh Samet is a relatively small island, about 7km long and 2km wide. It is just around a 2 hour walk or 25 minutes drive from Nadan Pier (the major entrance point to Koh Samet) to Laem Toei (the southern tip of Koh Samet).

There are around 10 beaches on the eastern coast of Koh Samet and only one beach on the western coast. If you want easy access to all tourist amenities, stay somewhere on the northern parts of Koh Samet, between Naban Pier and Ao Phai Beach.
If you want a secluded atmosphere, go further to the south of the island. Many beaches in the south are home to only a single resort, which contributes to a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
The most popular places to stay in Koh Samet, in my opinion, are Sai Kaew Beach, Nadan Village, Ao Hin Khok, Ao Phai, Ao Prao Beach, and Wong Duean. These areas offer close proximity to both the beach and a range of restaurants, bars, and shops.
But there are also smaller beaches and resorts scattered around the island for those seeking a quiet holiday and don’t mind traveling to the main town for more restaurants and bars options. These places are Ao Tubtim, Ao Chor, Ao Thian/ Ao Lung Dam, Ao Wai, Ao Kiew, and Ao Pakarang.
I traveled to Koh Samet on a budget and stayed in Stay Samed Hostel in the main village of Koh Samet. The hostel is located in the middle of everything, a short walk from the pier, the walking street, and the main beach. I will share the details of my stay in Koh Samet at the end of this article.
My top hotel picks in Koh Samet:
- Mid-range: Sai Kaew Beach Resort
- Budget: Green Bay Samed Resort
- Luxury: Paradee
Best Places to Stay in Koh Samet
1. Sai Kaew Beach
Sai Kaew Beach is the main beach of Koh Samet. It is conveniently located close to the main village and the main pier, making it a great location for access to the boats and all tourist amenities.

The beach is around 800 long with white fine sand and crystal clear water. It is an ideal place for swimming, sunbathing, taking a walk along the beach, and enjoying watersport activities like jet skiing.
The beach is lined with rows of restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops. You can see lots of vendors along the beach selling street food and beach towels. There are plenty of sunbeds, bean bags, and umbrellas for rent on the sand. You can rent the deck chair for around 50 baht for a day.
There are also many shops selling beach equipment such as hats, sunglasses, swimwears on the road to the beach from the main town. There are several massage shops and two 7-eleven shops are located within walking distance from Sai Kaew Beach.
Sai Kaew Beach has a great nightlife scene with all tables and chairs setting out on the sand. Many beachfront restaurants and bars have a fire show every night.

The most popular one is Ploy Talay restaurant located in the central area of the beach. I recommend coming to the restaurant early to find the best spot to watch the fire show around 8pm.
At the southern end of Sai Kaew Beach is the rocky area and is home to the iconic Mermaid and the child Stature. I like sitting on the rock near the Mermaid statue at sunset. But be mindful of the sandflies. I recommend wearing long pants and using insect repellent to avoid getting bitten.
I recommend staying on Sai Kaew Beach for first-timers and those who want to be on the beach and still within walking distance to the main village, the pier, and a wide range of restaurants and bars. The beach has a wide range of hotels and resorts for all needs.

Where did I stay in Koh Samet? My personal experiences
I stayed in Stay Samed Hostel in the main village of Koh Samet. I booked hotels in Koh Samet from Pattaya just two days before my arrival to Koh Samet. It was very spontaneous and there weren’t many hotels available at the time.
I traveled in mid December, which is part of the high season, so lots of hotels and resorts were fully booked. I didn’t have many options to choose from, but was able to book a few nights at Stay Samed Hostel.
Stay Samed Hostel

I had a good experience staying at Stay Samed Hostel. The hostel was clean and the owner was very friendly and helpful. He tried to organize transport for me to go to Koh Chang.
Location
Stay Samed Hostel is located in central location in the main village of Koh Samet. It is on a small alley just 10 minutes walk to Nadan Pier. This is very convenient as when I arrive at the pier, I can just walk to the hostel, saving me money on songthaew buses.

On the last day on Koh Samet, it is also convenient to just drag my suitcase to the pier for an early boat to the mainland and then Koh Chang. I don’t have to arrange additional transport and spend extra time getting to the pier. If you stay in place further south of the island, you might spend 20-30 minutes traveling to the pier and it can cost around 250-300 baht per taxi ride.
Stay Samed Hostel is also just a stone throw away from the main street. You can find many tourist amenities like tour agencies, restaurants, bars, laundry shops, motorbike rentals, massage shops, and souvenir shops within walking distance from the hostel.
The island’s main beach, Sai Kaew Beach, is also 10 minutes walk from Stay Samed Hostel. You can walk to the beach any time easily. It is also safe to walk at night to the beach to enjoy the nightlife and fire shows.
Amenities

I stayed in the dorm rooms with 6 beds and a private bathroom. My room is a female room only. The room was clean and had lots of natural lights. There are mirrors, cloth hangers, and air conditioning in the room. Everyone was provided with a towel.

They have a nice common area on the ground floor. There is no lift in the hostel, so carrying my suitcase to the second floor (where my room was) was a bit of a challenge. The hotel’s staff can help you with it if you have a heavy suitcase.
I would stay at Stay Samed Hostel again, and if I come back, I’d like to try booking one of the private rooms.
