If you want to escape from touristy islands in South Thailand like Phuket, Koh Samui, or Koh Phi Phi, you should consider visiting Koh Lanta. This island is known for its laid-back atmosphere, quiet beaches, charming local villages, and water activities such as snorkeling and diving.
Koh Lanta consists of two main islands: Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi. These islands are connected to each other by Siri Lanta Bridge. Most visitors will stay in Koh Lanta Yai because this island is where most hotels and tourist facilities are located.
You can stay in Koh Lanta Yai and take a half day trip to explore Koh Lanta Noi. Lanta Noi is a small island located on the north of Lanta Yai. This island is home to secluded beaches, mangrove forests, several viewpoints, and fishing piers. It is a good idea to rent a scooter to drive around.
The west of Koh Lanta Yai is more developed than the east coast. All beautiful beaches are located on the west coast, while the east coast is home to the historic old town and the mangrove forests. The beaches on the north are usually busier than the beaches in the south.

In this article, I will show you the list of the best places to stay in Koh Lanta. These include the best areas, popular beaches, and some recommended hotels in each area. If you are looking for Where to stay in Koh Lanta, keep reading.
Best areas to stay in Koh Lanta
When talking about where to stay in Koh Lanta, most people refer to Koh Lanta Yai, the larger island. Some of the best areas to stay in Koh Lanta Yai, in my opinion, are Saladan Village, Long Beach, Klong Khong Beach, Klong Nin Beach, Kantiang Bay, and the old town.

Most tourists choose to stay on the beaches along the west coast of the island. There are several hotels and guest houses in the old town on the east coast for those who want to experience the historic feel and don’t mind further away from the beaches.
The beaches are more busy on the northwest coast due to its proximity to the island’s main town and main pier. The beaches are nicer and quieter in the further south.
If you want a more secluded atmosphere and ideally plan to rent a motorbike, have a look at beaches on the island’s south west coast from Kantiang Bay, Klong Chark, Nui Bay and Bamboo Bay.
The island is around 25 km long and 6 km wide, so driving from north to south is around 1 hour. The best way to explore the island is on a scooter. It is a relatively flat island, so it is easy to get around. Local taxis like songthaews and tuk tuks are available on the pier, the main village, and popular beaches.
I was a solo female traveler who wanted to stay close to the pier for easy access to the boats, so I chose to stay in Saladan Village. I just need to walk between my hotel and the pier after the arrival and before the departure. I rented a scooter anyway, so it was easy to explore the island from Saladan.
I was looking for a mid-range hotel that is close to Saladan Pier, so I chose to stay at Non Du Lay Guest House. You can read more details of my stay in Koh Lanta at the end of this article.

Best Places to stay in Koh Lanta
In this section, I’ll provide a list of areas and beaches where you can book your hotel in Koh Lanta Yai, in order from north to south and from the west coast to the east coast.
1. Saladan Village
Saladan is the main town of Koh Lanta, located on the northern part of the island. This is the first place on Koh Lanta you see if you are arriving by boat at Saladan Pier. This is a good area to stay if you want to be close to the pier and all other tourist amenities.

The location of Saladan is also convenient for exploring the smaller island, Koh Lanta Noi. It is not within easy walking distance to the beach, but you can take around a 5-10 minutes tuk tuk ride to the nearby Khlong Dao beach.
Saladan Village has plenty of restaurants, massage shops, motorbike rentals, diving centers, and travel agents. You can easily find these facilities on the road to the pier and the island’s main road, 4245.
The village is also home to Koh Lanta walking street, Lanta Plaza 555, Wednesday Market, and several big supermarkets like Lanta Mart or Lotus‘s go fresh. It is a good place to do shopping and try authentic local food at cheaper prices than in the areas around beaches.
Some of my favorite restaurants in Saladan include Star Restaurant, Baifern Restaurant, and AddLanta Restaurant. You can try lots of local Thai foods and seafood dishes. Lots of restaurants near the pier offer nice views of the water.

If you need to rent a motorbike, I recommend having a look at Enjoy motorbike rental koh Lanta. Their shop is located right on the main road, the bike was in good condition, and the rental process was easy with just 3000 baht deposit. They gave it back to me when I returned the scooter.
I rented a scooter at this shop, then used half a day to drive around Lanta Noi, and a full day to explore beaches, national park, and the old town of Lanta Yai. Saladan is a very convenient location to explore the two islands.

It is a bit further away from the main Saladan Village and the pier, but you can easily reach by a scooter within 25 minutes. From Klong Nin, you can easily get to the nearby Nui Bay, Klong Khong beach, Kantiang Bay, and Lanta Old Town.
Additionally, the beach here is a rock-free beach, which is great for swimming. It is also a bit quieter than the beaches on the north like Long Beach, or Klong Dao.
You’ll find a few bars, restaurants with bean bags, sunbeds, umbrellas, tables, and chairs along the beach. There are plenty of tourist amenities like massage shops, convenient stores, and eateries on the Horizon road running parallel with the beach.

Kantiang Bay is also a convenient location to explore southern beaches and attractions like the secluded Ao Nui Bay, Bamboo Beach, Khlong Chak Waterfall, Following Giants Elephant Sanctuary, and Mu Ko Lanta National Park.
I highly recommend Kantiang bay for families, couples, and honeymooners who want to stay somewhere that has a tranquil beach holiday atmosphere.

There is a little bit downside is that it has only a few tourist facilities and restaurants compared to the northern beaches. But you still have 7-Eleven and a range of restaurants, bars, massage shops. It is best to rent a scooter to explore the whole island.
Where to Stay in Koh Lanta in Kantiang Bay:

This area has very limited tourist amenities like other beaches in the north of Koh Lan. You will not find many restaurants, bars, supermarkets, on the main road like other areas.
Khlong Chak Beach has white sand, calm water, and a quiet atmosphere. It is a good spot for swimming, chilling, taking a walk, and watching the sunset.
If you want to be away from it all for a few days, Khlong Chak Beach is a good choice. Being located further south of the island, it is a good location to explore the Mu Ko Lanta National Park, Ethical Elephant Sanctuary, and Klong Chak Waterfall.

Klong Chak Waterfall is a highlight attraction in the area. It is located just a few minutes drive inland from Klong Chak Beach. It is a great place to do a little trekking into the jungle, visit the cave, and the waterfall.
The ticket entrance to the waterfall can be used at Mu Ko Lanta National Park on the same day, so remember to keep it to use when visiting the national park in the southernmost part of the island.

Bamboo Beach is also a good base to explore the southern part of Koh Lanta. It is a few minutes drive from Klong Chark Beach & waterfall, the national park with its hiking trail, light house, and the sandy beach.
Where to Stay in Koh Lanta’s Bamboo Beach:
LaLaanta Hideaway Resort
LaLaanta is a hidden gem place to stay on Koh Lanta, located in a remote area in the southern tip of the island, close to Bamboo Bay Beach and the national park. The resort has an onsite restaurant, bar, private beachfront and 2 swimming pools.
The downside is, you know, the location is far from everything. It is a good place to just chill, swim, and sunbathe. It is best to rent a scooter to reach restaurants, 7-eleven, and other interesting sites.
10. Koh Lanta Old Town
Most visitors choose to stay in the main village and the beaches on the west coast, and take a day trip to the old town. But, if you have a long holiday in Koh Lanta, you can split your stay between the old town on the east and the beaches on the west.

Koh Lanta Old town is the oldest part of the island, and is a great place to learn about the island’s culture and history. This is also a good place to shop and try authentic local food.
There are several small guest houses and hotels in the old town. The Walking Street is a must see area in the old town. It is around a 500m long street near the pier and runs parallel with the sea.
The Walking Street is lined with shops selling souvenirs, clothes, and supermarkets, restaurants, and bars. Lots of these places are located on the wooden stilt houses overlooking the water. Be sure to check out the pier with its shrinking boat, and the colorful Chinese shrine along the walking street.

The road 4245 connects the beaches on the west to the old town in the east to be quite hilly and curvy, so I recommend being more careful if you drive a scooter. The road from the old town to the main village Saladan is really flat but remote and lacks light, so avoid driving in the dark.
Where to Stay in Koh Lanta Old town:
Verona Lanta Resort
Verona is a good place to stay in the old town of Lanta. It is located 5 minutes walking from the old town walking street and the pier. It is a beautiful and good value for money hotel with a well-kept pool, garden, and comfortable rooms.
Fresh House
Fresh House is a 3-star guest house located in the old town of Koh Lanta near the sea. It is within walking distance to the walking street with a range of restaurants, bars, and shops. It has spacious and clean rooms. You can choose to stay in the room with a balcony and the sea views for the best experience.
Where did I stay in Koh Lanta? My personal experiences
I was a solo female traveller looking for a private room to stay ranging from budget to mid range price.I also wanted to stay near the pier so I could easily walk to the boat when I arrive and depart. Non Du Lay Guest House was perfect for my needs.
I highly recommend booking your accommodations well in advance if you travel to Koh Lanta, or any parts of Thailand in the high season (November to May). You might have a good deal if you plan far in advance.
The price of accommodation spikes up in the high season. If you book at the last minute, you might end up with nothing, as most accommodations fill up quickly during peak season.
Non Du Lay Guest House
Location
Non Du Lay Guest House is conveniently located just a few steps from Saladan Pier. This is very convenient for me as I didn’t have to pay extra transportation from the pier to the hotel.

I just walked to the hotel from the pier when arriving from Koh Lipe and to the pier by boat to Koh Phi Phi. It is also convenient to walk to the pier and buy the boat ticket at the last minute. I booked the boat ticket to Phi Phi Island at 9am and the boat left at 9.30 which is very convenient .
The street where Non Du Lay is located is lined with hostels, restaurants (serving Thai food and seafood), travel agents, local minimarts, and a Dive center. You can easily book tours and find a nice place to dine with the views of the river.
I like to have dinner at the nearby Star Restaurant and Baifern Restaurant. My favorite dishes are the steam fish with lemon sauce.
From this hotel, you can walk to the main road 4245 to get to larger super markets, the night walking street, and the shopping area of Lanta Plaza 555.
The hotel has an overall good location for easy access to the pier, and to explore both Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi. The downside is that it is not within walking distance to the beach. The closest beach is around 30 minutes walk away, but you can also get there with a short tuk-tuk ride.
Amenities
I booked a standard double room with a shared bathroom at Non Du Lay Guest House. The room is small but clean with a double bed, air conditioning, and 2 free bottles of water. There are clothing hangers and umbrellas on the patio outdoors.

They have a separate shared kitchen and bathroom area. In the kitchen, there is tea, coffee, cookies, hot water, plates, and a microwave. The bathroom is clean. They also have onsite restaurants serving local Thai food like pad Thai with good prices.
I stayed in a room close to the street, but it is still quiet for a good night’s sleep. I rented a scooter and parked outside on the street and had no problem.

The check in was easy but you need to deposit 500 baht to be able to get to the room. It was overall a good stay for me, close to the pier, budget-friendly, clean, and safe.

Koh Lanta may not have the best beaches in Thailand, but it offers a great balance of natural beauty, relaxed atmosphere, and fewer crowds compared to more popular destinations. If you are looking for a calm holiday away from mass tourism, Koh Lanta is a good place to visit.

Some of the best areas to stay in Koh Lanta are Klong Dao beach, Long Beach, Long Beach, Klong Khong, Klong Nin, and Kantiang Beach. The beaches are nicer and quieter toward the south of the island.
However, if you want easy access to the pier and the night market, you can consider staying in the Saladan Village; Koh Lanta old town on the east coast offers a more local and historic atmosphere.
