Kata Beach is one of the most popular places to stay in Phuket. It is a good base for families with kids and those who want a central location, good nightlife scene, and close proximity to Patong (the heart of the party scene in Phuket).

In this article, I will share with you some of the best areas and places to stay in Kata. I will suggest some best hotels in each area. So, if you’re looking for Where to stay in Kata Beach, keep reading.

Where is Kata Beach?

Kata is a popular beach town located on the south western part of Phuket, around 20 minutes south of Patong. The beach is set right next to another popular beach called Karon Beach.

Kata is around 50km south of Phuket International Airport, which is around 1-2 hours drive depending on traffic conditions. Phuket Old Town is 15 km away, about 25-60 minutes by car.

Kata has two beaches, Kata Beach is the main beach and Kata Noi is a smaller beach. Kata Noi is located south of Kata beach.

Why Staying in Kata Beach?

1. Beautiful Beaches

Most people come to Phuket to enjoy beaches. Kata itself is home to two beautiful beaches, Kata and Kata Noi Beach. Both beaches have white sand, clean water, and are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and for waterport activities like surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding.

2. Good Dining and Nightlife Without the Chaos

Kata has a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and bars where you can enjoy a relaxing nightlife. It provides a more peaceful environment, without the hectic nightlife found in Patong.

There are restaurants and night markets along the main road, as well as lots of street food stalls along the beach road of Kata Beach. You will have plenty of options in terms of food, from local Thai cuisine to international dishes.

3. Well-Serviced & Convenient Location

Kata Beach has a wide range of tourist amenities. You can easily find everything you need for a comfortable stay. There are restaurants, bars, convenience stores, night markets, motorbike rentals, ATMs, massage parlors, and souvenir shops.

In terms of location, Kata has a relatively central location to explore the island. It is located on the south western coast of the island, which is a great place to explore south Phuket. Most major tourist attractions are located on South Phuket.

You can easily get to Patong, Karon, Phuket Old Town, Nai Harn, and Promthep Cape. Other cultural attractions like the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong are also close to Kata.

4. Family-Friendly Environment

If you are looking for the best areas to stay in Phuket for family, Kata beach is one of the best choices. This is because Kata has a central location, easy access to tourist amenities, family-friendly beach, good nightlife, and laid back atmosphere.

Downside of Staying in Kata Beach

Kata is a popular tourist destination, so it can be very crowded, especially in the peak season (from November to May). You won’t find much of a traditional Thai experience here, so for a more local vibe, consider a less touristy spot.

Best areas to stay in Kata Beach

There are two best areas to stay in Kata, including Kata Beach and Kata Noi Beach. Kata Beach is the bigger beach with lots of tourist amenities. Kata Noi, located south of Kata beach, is a smaller, quieter area with several mid-range and high end resorts.

If you’re within walking distance from everything, I recommend booking a hotel and resort in the Kata Beach area. If you want to stay in a quiet area or you rent a scooter, you can stay in the Kata Noi Beach area.

I prefer to stay in the Kata Beach area due to its central location, easy access to a wide range of tourist amenities and the night markets. Kata Beach has a wider range of accommodations for all budgets.Kata Noi has more choices in terms of 5-star resorts.

Best Places to Stay in Kata Beach

1. Kata Beach

The Kata Beach area includes Kata Beach, Kata Road, and Patak Road. It is a small area around 1.5km long and 1km wide. You can get around on foot, scooter, tuk tuk, and taxi easily.

This area is home to lots of restaurants, bars, shops, and convenient stores. The Kata Walking Street Night Market, Kata Plaza, Kata Beach Community Park, and Wat Kitti Sangkharam are located in this area.

Kata Beach is 1.5km long beach with white sand, shaded trees, and lots of beach facilities like sunbeds, umbrellas, watersport equipment for rent. There are massage shops, restaurants, cafes, and lots of street food stalls along the beach road.

The southern area of Kata Beach is a popular spot for surfing, especially in the low season. The northern part of Kata Beach is close to Ko pu island, which is a great spot for snorkeling.

Kata Road or 4030 Road is the main road in the Kata Beach area, located a few hundred meters away from the beach. The road is lined with tourist amenities like restaurants, shops, and night markets.

Patak Road, or road 4028, is located more inland, 2 blocks away from Kata Beach. This area is home to the local Wat Kitti Sangkharam, and is close to the hill where you can find the trail to hike to the Big Buddha.

You can find some beachfront resorts at the southern area of Kata Beach. Otherwise, you can find plenty of resorts along the main road, where you can walk for a few minutes to the beach.

Where to stay in Kata Beach:

Sawasdee Village

This is a popular 4-star mid-range hotel in the central location of Kata. It is located on Kade Kwan Road, within walking distance to the main road and Kata beach. It has an excellent location to explore Kata on foot, and is close to everything.

The resort has beautiful grounds with traditional Thai style. There are 2 outdoor swimming pools, a kids pool, and a well-maintained garden, and spacious rooms. If you are looking for one of the best places to stay in Kata, Sawasdee is an excellent choice.

OZO Phuket

OZO Phuket is a great mid-range hotel, conveniently located on the Kata main road, a short walk from the Kata night market, and all restaurants, and shops. It is also close to Kata Beach.

The hotel has beautiful facilities with multiple swimming pool areas for both adults and children, as well as a gym, restaurant, and bar.

Chanalai Flora Resort

This mid-range resort is located near the intersection between the Kata Main road and Koktanod road. It is close to Kata Beach, lots of restaurants, tourist shops, convenient stores, travel agencies, and massage parlors.

The resort has three swimming pools, and spacious rooms. The hotel is generally located on the hill, so there might be stairs to reach the rooms, which could be a problem for those with limited mobility or heavy luggage.

The Boathouse Phuket

This is a 4-star beachfront hotel located at the southern end area of Kata Beach. If you want to stay right on the beach, the Boathouse is a great choice. You can have direct access to Kata Beach plus lots of other tourist amenities on the main road.

The hotel has a small pool overlooking the sea with sunbeds and umbrellas for the guests. It also has a gym, amazing onsite restaurant, and comfortable rooms.

Malisa Villa Suites

This is a 5-star luxury place to stay in Kata. It has an excellent location of the Kata Main Road close to Kata Beach and Kata Community Park. It’s a great choice for couples and families looking to enjoy a touch of luxury during their stay in Kata. The hotel has great security and you can book the suites with a private pool for the best experience.

Blue Palm Kata Resort

If you are on a budget, Blue Palm is a good choice. This 3-star hotel is located on Kade Kwan Road, between the main road and Patak road. It is a bit on the hill side, but still close to the beach and all tourist facilities like the night markets, 7/11, laundry shops, and restaurants.

2. Kata Noi Beach

If you want a quieter atmosphere, more luxury resort choices, you can consider staying in Kata Noi Beach. This beach is 700m long, located south of Kata Beach.

To reach Kata Noi Beach from Kata Beach, you’ll need to cross a road that goes over a hill. The ride takes around 5–10 minutes, depending on your starting and ending points in each area.

Much of the beachfront is occupied by the Katathani Resort. There are sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach for rent. The beach has white sand and is a good spot for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and surfing. The northern part is quieter than the southern part of the beach.

Kata Noi is a great place to relax and enjoy the luxury amenities at your resorts. The downside is that nightlife is quiet in Kata Noi, and you will need a taxi to get to the central area of Kata for more nights.

Where to stay in Kata Noi Beach:

Katathani Phuket Beach Resort

Katathani is one of the best places to stay in Kata Noi. It is a popular 5-star luxury resort located right on the beachfront area of Kata Noi. The resorts have multiple swimming pools and dining options. The rooms are spacious and comfortable.

It is a huge resort, I recommend booking a room on the beach side for the best experience. Take a note that there are 7-Elvent and few restaurants outside of the resort, and this area is pretty quiet in the evening. You’ll need a taxi to get to the Kata Central area if you want nightlife.

The Shore At Katathani – Adult Only

This is a good 5-star option for couples, honeymooners, and adults who want a relaxing beach holiday. The resort has an infinity pool and rooms with stunning views of the sea.

Mom Tri’s Villa Royale

This is an amazing 4-star mid-range hotel located on the northern area of Kata Noi beach. It has an excellent location close to both Kata and Kata Noi Beach. You can easily walk to the beaches and tourist amenities.

The resort has multiple outdoor pools and a popular Mom Tri’s Kitchen where you can enjoy both Thai and international dishes.
