Stay in Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai?

I rented a scooter and explored most parts of Koh Phangan. Thong Nai Pan Noi or Thong Nai Pan Yai are some of my favorite places to visit on the island, famous for their beautiful beaches and tranquil vibe.

Located on the north east coast of Koh Phangan, Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai are some of the best places to stay on the island for a quiet beach holiday. It is further away from the bustling Full Moon Party in Haad Rin, which is perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

Most visitors to Koh Phangan will stay in the popular beaches on the west coast then take a day trip to Thong Nai Pan beaches on a rented scooter or guided tour.

These areas have a good range of resorts, and worth considering staying if you are looking for a peaceful holiday and don’t mind being a bit further away from the party center of the island.

But which area is better to stay in, Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai? No worries,  in this article, I’ll share some similarities and differences between these two sister beaches, so you can decide which one best suits your needs and preferences.

Is it Better to Stay in Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai?

Generally speaking, both offer a quiet atmosphere, but Thong Nai Pan Noi is more developed with more upscale resorts and tourist amenities.

They’re just a 5-minute drive apart, so you can easily stay in one spot and visit the other without any hassle. If you like walking, it’s about a 20-minute walk between the two areas. It is not ideal to walk at night though because some parts feel quite isolated after dark.

The two beaches are equally beautiful, but I personally prefer staying in Thong Nai Pan Noi because its village offers more choices of restaurants, bars, and shops. I also enjoy a livelier nightlife scene, so Thong Nai Pan Noi is perfect for me.

Thong Nai Pan is around 30 minutes from the island’s main pier, Thongsala Pier. If you arrive in Phangan from Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Surat Thani and Chumphon, you will likely arrive at Thongsala Pier.

From Thongsala Pier, you can take a local songthaew taxi to your hotel in Thong Nai Pan. You can find lots of them at the pier. The private transfer is around 800 baht. If you share it with other people, it will be cheaper.

You can double check with your resort if they offer pick up from the pier or book the transfer with the boat operator. Lomprayah Speedboat Company offers 150 baht to transfer to the most popular place on the island, but unfortunately, they don’t go to Thong Nai Pan.

Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai are a convenient base to explore the northern part of Phangan. You can easily explore popular places like the waterfalls in Namtok Than Sadet National Park, Bottle Beach & Viewpoint, and Chaloklum Beach.

The Full Moon Party in Haad Rin is located around 40 minutes drive away from Thong Nai Pan. So if you want to visit this area, just keep in mind it’ll take a bit more time and cost a little extra for transport.

Accommodations

Both Thong Nai Pan Noi or Yai have a good range of accommodations for all budgets. However, if you are looking for something luxurious, Thong Nai Pan Noi is a better choice.
