Kata is a popular beach town in Phuket. It is located on the west coast of the island, just south of Karon and Patong. The town has beautiful beaches and a vibrant nightlife scene but is quieter than Patong. It’s a great base for exploring not just the southern part of Phuket, but the entire island.

In this article, I will show you the list of the best things to do and see in Kata and the nearby areas. These include the beaches, viewpoints, temples, night market, and outdoor activities such as surfing and hiking.

10 Best Things to do in Kata, Phuket

1. Kata Beach

Kata Beach is around 1.5 km long with white sand and clean water. The beach runs parallel to the main road (4030) and is only 200 meters away.

The beach is lined with beach facilities such as umbrellas and sunbeds, and water sport equipment for rent. There are lots of trees along the shore. You can have a relaxing massage right on the beach as there are several massage shops along the beach.

The one way beach road, Soi Pakbang, is lined with delicious street food stalls. You can order local Thai food here at a reasonable price and bring it to the beach. The market offers a wide selection of street food. They also sell cut mixed fruits, smoothies, and fresh coconut water.  

You can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, relaxing, or taking a leisure walk along the beach. Koh Phu island, located near the northern part of Kata Beach is a good spot for snorkeling. Other water activities are kayaking, parasailing, and surfing.

2. Kata Noi Beach

Kata Noi Beach is the little sister of Kata Beach. It is located just 5 minutes drive south of Kata Beach. Kata Noi is smaller (around 600m long) and has a quieter atmosphere than the area’s main beach.

Kata Noi beach has white sand and clean water with some shade along the shore. It is a good spot for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. The beach is less crowded than in Kata Beach. There are beach chairs and umbrellas for rent as well as some restaurants along the shore.

To access Kata Noi Beach, you need to park the scooter on the side of the road, and walk down the short steep stair to get to the beach. The northern area of the beac near Katathani resort has a quieter vibe than the central and south area of the beach.

3. Kata Night Market

Kata Night Market is one of the highlight attractions in Kata. The market is located right on the main road, Kata road (or 4030 Road). The market is open everyday from 12am to 11pm, offering a great shopping and dining experience.

You can find a good selection of street food, drinks, as well as fresh fruits, and souvenirs. You can find almost everything at the market, and make sure to bargain when you buy clothes and accessories.

There are plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars along the main road where the night market is located. You can walk around and explore the area after visiting the night market.

4. Karon Viewpoint

Karon Viewpoint is one of the most visited viewpoints in Phuket. It is located right on the main road 4030, just a 5 minute drive on the scooter from the central area of Kata. It is also close to the popular Nai Harn Beach, around 8 minutes drive away.

The viewpoint has stunning views of three beaches, which include Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon beach. It is free to visit, and the area has several viewing platforms for you to explore. It is best to visit at sunset.

Karon Viewpoint is a popular stop on the Around the island sightseeing tour. If you don’t take a tour or rent a scooter, you can take a taxi or ride share services such as Grab, Bolt, or InDrive to get to the viewpoint. 

5. Dino Park Mini Golf

Dino Park is a popular point of interest in Phuket, located right on the main road between Kata and Karon Beach. The complex has many dinosaurs and a 18 hole mini golf. It is a good place to visit for all ages including families with children and adults.

Dino Park has an onsite Dino Bar & Restaurant where you can enjoy food and drink while exploring the area. It has shaded areas so you can explore during the daytime, but it is better to visit late afternoon for a cooler atmosphere.

6. Hiking to the Big Buddha

The Big Buddha is a major cultural attraction in Phuket, located close to Kata. You can take a guided sightseeing tour, take a taxi, Grab, rent a scooter, or even hike to the Big Buddha.

If you like hiking, there are trails starting at the Pak Soi 14 Road. It is a difficult trail with a steep incline. Terrain, so make sure that you are physically fit to do it. The hike is around 1 hour. I also recommend doing it during the dry season and avoiding the rainy days.

7. Surfing

Kata Beach is a good place for surfing in Phuket, especially in the low season, from May to October. The southern area of the beach is a popular area for surfers.

There are several surfing schools and shops along Kata Beach where you can take surf lessons or rent surf boards. A one hour private lesson is around 1000 baht; one hour renting a surfboard, SUP, or Kayak is around 300-500 baht.

8. Nui Beach

Nui Beach is a secluded beach located around 6km south of the central area of Kata. It is a good place to chill, take photos, snorkeling, and relax.

 You can drive south along the 4030 road toward Karon Viewpoint. The last 2km to Nui Beach is a dirt road. Lots of people park their scooter near the main road and use the 4 wheel driver or ATV services to get down to the beach. If you don’t want to pay 300 baht round trip, you can walk down. 

It is possible to drive down with the scooter but only for experienced drivers. The road is not in good condition and can be dangerous if you don’t know how to drive.

In the same area as Nui Beach, you can visit Black Rock Viewpoint and Cape Krathing. I skipped Nui Beach, and checked out these places.

9. Black Rock Viewpoint

Black Rock Viewpoint, aka Pa Hin Dam, is located around 6km south of Kata. It has stunning views of Nai Harn Beach,Ya Nui, and Promthep Cape. You can drive along the main road 4030 and turn right onto the dirt road about 300 meters south of Karon Viewpoint.

It is possible to drive along the dirt road to the parking area then hike up to the viewpoint. Local songthaew drivers might approach you and tell you that you can’t drive along the road, but it’s possible to drive to just the parking area. 

The road from the main road to the Pa Hin Dam parking sign is wide and flat; it’s just a lot of dirt. It is dangerous to drive down to the Nui Beach and Cape Krathing though.

From the parking area, you can hike to the viewpoint for 15-20 minutes. Not many people know about it, so it’s pretty quiet and less crowded compared to other spots in Phuket.

10. Cape Krathing

Cape Krathing is a remote area in the south western coast of Phuket. It has beautiful views of the sea and is less crowded than other viewpoints like Promthep Cape or Windmill Viewpoint. 

It is also a good hiking destination. You can hike from the Black Rock parking area to Cape Krathing for around 40 minutes or from Nai Harn to Cape Kathing for around an hour.
