In this article, I will outline the differences and similarities between Sukhumvit and Pratunam, focusing on their location, public transportation, accommodations, nightlife, shopping, food, and attractions.
If you’re wondering whether you should stay in Sukhumvit or Pratunam, keep reading. I’ve stayed in different areas of Bangkok and explored the city extensively, so I hope to give you the best suggestion possible.
Is it better to stay in Sukhumvit or Pratunam?
I stayed in both Sukhumvit and Pratunam. I enjoyed my stay in both areas. Each area has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Both Pratunam and Sukhumvit are located in central areas of modern Bangkok. They are very well-connected to the train systems, including Airport Rail Link, BTS skytrain, and MRT underground train. That means you can easily explore Bangkok using public transport from either location.

I stayed in Pratunam because it was conveniently located just a train ride from Suvarnabhumi Airport. My arrival was late in the evening, so I want to stay close to the airport. The area itself has a good shopping scene with a famous wholesale market Pratunam Market and Platunam Fashion Mall.
Pratunam is also well connected to the BTS sky train, so I used it as a base to visit Chatukchak Weekend Market and the nearby Siam shopping district. Accommodations in Pratunam are also generally cheaper than in Sukhumvit, which are good for budget travelers.
I stayed in Sukhumvit to enjoy its vibrant nightlife scene, easy access to a range of shopping malls, and its diverse food scene. I can get to the nightlife zones and famous malls without traveling too far. This area is home to Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, Terminal 21, EmQuartier, and Emporium.
From Sukhumvit, I can use BTS skytrain to get to the nearby Siam for more shopping, Silom for more gay-friendly nightlife, or Jodd Fairs Night Market. There is an MRT train line passing through Sukhumvit taking you to the old town, Chinatown, and the riverside area to see iconic cultural attractions.
Generally speaking, I recommend Pratunam for those who want to stay close to the airport, enjoy cheap fashion and accessories shopping, and budget-friendly accommodations.
I recommend staying in Sukhumvit if you’re looking for a well-rounded experience with a mix of nightlife, shopping, dining, and easy access to public transport. This area is a place to go for vibrant nightlife, upscale shopping malls, and an international atmosphere with food options from all over the world.
If your time allows, you can consider splitting your stay in both Sukhumvit and Pratunam like me. You will have more time to explore each area both day and night.

Location
Both Pratunam and Sukhumvit are located in the modern heart of Bangkok. These two areas are well-connected to the BTS Sukhumvit skytrain line, and are only a few train stops apart.

Pratunam is the area of Platunam Market and Platunam Fashion Mall. It is right north of Saen Saep Canal and Siam Shopping district. Pratunam is directly connected to Suvarnabhumi Airport via Airport Rail Link Train. The Phaya Thai and Ratchaprarop airport train stations are located in the Pratunam area.
Sukhumvit is the area around Sukhumvit Road. This is a huge road connecting different parts of Thailand. Most tourists will interact with the area around the first 6km along Sukhumvit Road, stretching from Sukhumvit Soi 1 to Phra Khanong Station.
The most convenient area in Sukhumvit is the area around Nana and Asok Station. Most popular points of interest of Sukhumvit are located here, including Nana Plaza, Soy Cowboy, or Terminal 21. The Asok area is the transport hub of Sukhumvit, offering connection to both MRT subway and BTS skytrain.
The area in upper Sukhuvit, around Thonglor or Ekamai has a good range of trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants. The accommodation here is usually cheaper than the lower part of Sukhumvit. It is a bit further away from the action though. Lots of expats living in this area.

Both Sukhumvit and Pratunam have excellent connections to the Bangkok train system. Pratunam has direct train access to the Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is also home to several BTS skytrain stations such as Phaya Thai, and Ratchathewi.
You can use this BTS train to get to Chatukchak Weekend Market, Sukhumvit, Siam, Silom. Additionally, the area has a good canal boat system. You can take a boat ride to the old town, Chinatown, and Khao san Road easily from Pratunam’s Saen Saep Canal.

To get to Sukhumvit from the airport, you can use the airport rail link and an additional BTS or MRT train ride depending where you are staying in this area.
For the best connection to other parts of Bangkok, I recommend staying around the Asok Station area. This area is home to both BTS and MRT stations, which will take you everywhere in Bangkok.
The Saen Saep Canal runs though both Pratunam and Sukhumvit, so you can take canal boat rides to the Old Town, Chinatown, and Sukhumvit. This is a great way to avoid the road traffic and experience local life.
