Patong and Kata are two most popular places to stay in Phuket. Both towns are known for their beautiful beaches, close proximity to many tourist attractions, and lively nightlife scene. Patong is the nightlife hub of the island while Kata has a more laid back and family-friendly atmosphere.
In this article, I will outline the similarities and differences between Kata and Patong to help you decide which one suits your preference. I will cover aspects such as accommodations, locations, nightlife, shopping, food, and attractions.
If you are searching for “Where is better, Patong or Kata”, keep reading. I’ve traveled all around Thailand and had a great time exploring Phuket on a scooter, so I hope to give you the best advice.
Is it better to stay in Patong or Kata Beach?
I was a solo female traveler when I visited Phuket. I stayed in both Patong and the Kata/ Karon area. I prefer Kata more because it offers a more laid-back vibe, less noise, and a cozy atmosphere thanks to its compact size. I still have easy access to dozens of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Generally speaking, both Kata and Patong offer central locations, easy access to the beach, and a wide range of tourist amenities. The key difference between the two towns is its nightlife. Patong is the nightlife hub of Phuket, so if you’re after parties, Patong is the best place to stay.
Being the nightlife center of Phuket, Patong can be noisy, dirty, and not very family-friendly. If you are looking for a more laid-back and family-friendly area that is close to Patong, Kata is an excellent choice. Kata is located just 10km south of Patong, so you can always take a short Grab taxi to get to Patong.
Another difference between Patong and Kata is the shopping scene. Patong has a better shopping scene as it is home to large modern shopping mall Jungcelon Mall with lots of luxury shopping and fine dining.
Patong is also a bit closer to Phuket International Airport, which can save you some time and money on transportation to and from the airport.
My recommended hotels in Patong:
- luxury: Four Points by Sheraton
- Mid-range: Phuket Graceland
- budget: Silver Resortel
Top recommended stays in Kata:
- luxury: Katathani Resort
- mid-range: Sawasdee Village
- budget: Blue Palm Kata Resort
Location
Kata and Patong are located in similar locations on the west coast of Phuket, only 10km apart. They are both excellent locations to explore Phuket, especially the southern part of the island.

Patong is located between Karon and Kamala, around 36km south of the airport, 14km west of Phuket Old Town. Kata is located between Karon and Kata Noi Beach, around 47km south of the airport, and 15km south west of Phuket Old Town.
From Patong and Kata, you can explore major sights like the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, and the historic old town easily. Kata is a bit closer to Karon Viewpoint, Nai Harn Beach, and Promthep Cape. Patong is a bit closer to beaches like Kamala, Surin, and Bang Tao Beach.

Beach
Both Kata and Patong have a beautiful beach with white sand, clean water. Patong beach is a longer beach around 3km long, while Kata beach is around 1.5km long.

These beaches are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, walking, and watersport activities like jet skiing. The beach at Kata is also a good spot for surfing, especially in the rainy season.
From Kata, you can easily get to nearby beaches like Karon and Kata Noi. Karon is a 3km long beach and Kata Noi is 1km long with lots of beach activities. Depending where you stay in Kata, you can easily walk or take a short Grab taxi ride to Karon and Kata Noi.
From Patong, you can get to nearby beaches like Freedom Beach, or Tri Trang Beach. These places are located just a few minutes drive south of Patong, offering a quieter atmosphere compared to Patong Beach.

Nightlife
Patong is a place to go for parties and nightlife. This area is packed with bars and adult entertainment options, especially on the 350m long Bangla Walking Street. The nightlife in Patong is lively, loud, busy, full of energy.

Kata has a good range of bars and restaurants, but much quieter than Patong. If you want a relaxing evening, Kata is a better choice. You can always take a short taxi ride to Patong for more nightlife options.
Shopping
With modern shopping malls and a range of night markets, Patong has a better shopping scene than Kata. The Jungcelon Mall is home to more than 300 stores of all kinds (local boutiques, souvenirs, fashion, electronics), as well as Robinson Department Store and Big C Extra supermarket.

You can find everything at Jungcelon Mall, from international brands, to local goods, and upscale restaurants. Additionally, the mall also has beautiful architecture and a good spit for escape from the heat.
For more budget-friendly shopping, you can check out lots of shops around the night markets like Banzaan, Malin, or OTOP.
Kata doesn’t have a huge shopping mall like in Patong, but it has a good range of shops and night markets for you to do your shopping. If you need more shops, you can always take a short taxi ride to Patong, which is located only 10km away.
Food
Both Kata and Patong have a wide range of restaurants and street food stalls. You can find both local Thai food, international food, and seafood dishes.

As a bigger location, Patong has a little more choices. You can find street food at the night markets (Banzaan, OTOP, Malin) or fine restaurants at Jungcelon Mall.
In Kata, there are a range of restaurants along the more than 1km long Kata Road. You can find lots of food stalls inside night markets such as Kata Night Market and KT Plaza.
Cultural Attractions
Both Kata and Patong don’t have any significant cultural attractions. There are local temples on the hillside area of Patong such as Wat Doi Thepnimit, or Karon temple near Kata.
Both towns are relatively close to Big Buddha and Wat Chalong, which are the most famous cultural attractions on Phuket. You can consider taking the Around the island sightseeing tour to visit these places if you don’t drive.
Family-friendly Atmosphere
Kata has a more family-friendly atmosphere than Patong. It has a family-friendly beach, a wide range of tourist amenities, and quieter nightlife. There are also plenty of kid-friendly resorts and hotels in Kata.
From Kata, you can easily access other family-friendly beaches like Karon and Kata Noi. The Dino Park Mini Golf, located between Kata and Karon, is a great destination for both children and adults.
Patong has good central location and a wide range of kid-friendly resorts, but as the epicenter of Phuket nightlife, the town has lots of loud music, go-go bars and adult entertainment venues. It is not ideal if you’re walking around with kids after dinner.
Hiking Opportunities & Viewpoints
Both Kata and Patong have a beach in the front and hills in the back. You can find hiking trails and viewpoints on the hillside area of each town.

In Patong, you can hike to Kalim Viewpoint, Bang Wan Waterfall, or the viewpoint near Wat Doi Thepnimit. In Kata, you can find the trail to the Big Buddha, and several viewpoints along the trail.
Kata is also close to Karon Viewpoint, which is one of the most popular viewpoints of the island. This place offers stunning views of three beaches, Kata, Kata Noi, and Karon. Other viewpoints close to Kata include the Black Rock Viewpoint and Cape Krathing.
Getting to and Getting Around
Both Kata and Patong are very well-connected by road. You can easily get to these towns by using metered taxis, local buses, as well as riding share services like Bolt, InDrive, or Grab.
The taxi ride from Phuket airport to Pating is from 600-1000 baht, to Kata is from 800-1200 baht. The taxi ride from Phuket Old Town to Patong is around 400 baht, and to Kata is around 500 baht.
There are also smart buses connecting the airport to Patong and Kata. The bus runs everyday from 8.15 am to 11.30pm. The bus ride is only 100 baht from any destination either Patong or Kata. The bus stops in Patong first before Kata and then terminates in Rawai.
There are also local bus routes running between the old town with Patong, as well as the old town with Kata. A bus ticket is about 50 baht and offers a great way to experience how the locals travel.
Within the center area of each town, you can get around on foot. It is easier to get around Kata on foot as it has a smaller size than in Patong. You can easily walk along the 1km long Kata roads for shops, restaurants, and the night markets.
In Patong, you can easily walk around major points of interest like Banzaan Night Market, Jungcelon Mall, and Bangla Walking Street. To get to other places like Malin Plaza or OTOP market from the Central area of Patong, you can take a short tuk tuk, Grab taxi/ bike ride.
