Should You Stay in Lamai or Chaweng?

Chaweng and Lamai are the most popular tourist towns in Koh Samui. These areas both have a vibrant nightlife scene, many tourist amenities, and a good long beach. They also have relatively central locations to explore the popular points of interest on the island.

In this article, I will compare Lamai and Chaweng, focusing on the location, accommodations, beaches, nightlife, shopping, food, and attractions. I stayed in both areas and traveled around the island on a scooter, so I hope to give you the best possible advice based on my personal experience.

Is it Better to Stay in Lamai or Chaweng?

I prefer to split my stay in each area to experience both areas of Koh Samui. I used Chaweng as the base to explore the nightlife in Chaweng and to visit northern beaches and attractions like Bophut Beach, Mae Nam Beach, Bophut Fisherman Village, and the Big Buddha.

I used Lamai to explore other famous attractions in the southern part of Koh Samui. From Lamai, it is closer to the popular points of interest like Lamai Night Market, Overlap Stone, Hin Ta Hin Yai, Wat Khunaram, Na Muang Waterfall, and Tarnim Magic Garden.

Staying in each place helped me save time and reduce transportation costs. Taxis in Koh Samui are usually more expensive than other parts of Thailand, staying closer to a cluster of attractions can help cut down on costs. I rented a scooter anyway, but it still helps to save time traveling.

Generally speaking, Chaweng is a better place to go for parties, shopping, and food. This is the tourist hub of Koh Samui, so it offers a wider range of shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, night markets, and malls. The downside is that the Central area of Chaweng can be very crowded, noisy, busy, and tourists.

Lamai is a better area for a more laid back atmosphere but still has easy access to the beaches, restaurants, bars, and shops. It is more suitable for couples, families, and those looking to unwind.

Another factor to consider is their location. If you prefer staying closer to the airport and most of the piers (Bangrak and Maenam), Chaweng is a better choice. Lamai is a bit further away from these departure and arrival points of the island.

My recommended stays in Lamai:

Best hotels to stay in Chaweng:

Location

Both Chaweng and Lamai are located on the eastern coast of Samui. Chaweng is around 12 km north of Lamai. A taxi ride (Grab, Bolt, InDrive) between two areas is around 500 baht and takes 20-25 minutes.

Chaweng is located on the north eastern coast, which is a good base for exploring the north of the island. You can easily visit famous places like Fisherman Village, Bo Phut Beach, and Choeng Mon Beach.

Lamai is located toward the south of Samui, which is a better base to explore popular attractions in the southern part. You’ll be close to many famous viewpoints, temples, and cultural attractions like Hin Ta Hin Yai, Overlap stone, Na Muang Waterfall, or Tarnim Magic Garden.

Chaweng is much closer to Koh Samui International Airport, so if you want to stay close to the airport for late arrival and early departure, Chaweng is a better choice.

Samui has 4 main piers, including Nathon, Lipa Noi, Bangrak, and Maenam Pier. Chaweng is closer to most piers, so if you are coming from nearby islands like Koh Tao or Koh Phangan and want to stay near the piers, Chaweng is the better base.

Lamai is only closer to Lipa Noi Pier (Raja Ferry), which has boats from/ to mainland Surat Thani and stops at Donsak Pier.  If you want a bit closer to Raja Ferry Pier, Lamai is a better option.

Accommodations

Both Chaweng and Lamai have hundreds of hotels for all budgets. From reasonable priced hostels to luxury international chain beach resorts, these two towns have it all.

As these are the most popular towns on the island, make sure to book your accommodations well in advance, especially if you ‘re traveling into the high season from November to May.

I booked my hotels spontaneously at the last minute when I visited at the end of December, and I almost couldn’t find a place to stay. Hotel prices also skyrocketed during that time. So, make sure if you plan to book your stay early to get the quality and good price hotel.

The central area of Chaweng, around Chaweng Beach Road, near the Central Samui Mall and Night Market, are very crowded, busy, and noisy. So if you want a bit quieter atmosphere, it best to choose somewhere a bit further north or south of this area.

Beaches

Both Chaweng and Lamai have a few kilometers of long, sandy beaches. For me, they are equally good beaches for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying watersports like parasailing, kayaking, or skiing.

Chaweng Beach

Lamai Beach
Lamai Beach

Chaweng is the longest beach on the island, around 6-7 km long. The beach is separated from the main Beach Road by a row of hotels, which helps create a quieter vibe away from the traffic. The downside is that you need to access the beach through hotels or just a couple of public roads to the beach.

Lamai Beach is a bit short, around 3-4km long.  Like Chaweng, this beach is lined with palm trees, with beachfront restaurants, bars, and beach vendors selling snacks, foods, and beach sarongs.

They both have plenty of beachfront facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, and watersports equipment for rent. There are massage places on each beach. You can easily get a good massage right on the beach.

The evening in Chaweng Beach is more vibrant than in Lamai. The beachfront of Chaweng has more famous beach bars and clubs with DJs, low music and big crowds. The beachfront of Lamai has more chill bars with candles, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Nightlife

Chaweng is the nightlife hub of Koh Samui, so if you come to Samui to party, it is best to stay in Chaweng. Chawng Beach and beachfront are packed with famous bars, and night clubs that open until early hours in the morning.

Large clubs like Green Mango, Elephant Beach Club, and Ark Bar are fun and busy places to parties in Chaweng. There are often fireshows on the beachfront of Chaweng.

Lamai has a good range of cozy bars and night clubs, especially the area around Had Lamai Road. The bar scene in Lamai is more relaxed than Chaweng with less noise, music and crowds.

In addition to the bar scene, both Lamai and Chaweng have lively night markets to explore. In Lamai, you have the Lamai Night Market and Lamai Night Bazaar. In Chaweng, you can explore the Chaweng Night Market next to Chaweng Lake, The night market at the Central Samui Mall, and Si Khao Night Market.

Shopping

Both Chaweng and Lamai have a good variety of shops, but Chaweng is generally a better place to go for shopping. This is because Chaweng is home to the island’s largest mall, Central Samui. It is also closer to Bophut Fishment village, which is another popular spot for shopping on Samui.

Central Samui Mall

Lamai Night Market
Lamai Night Market

Central Samui is the modern mall with a good range of high-end and affordable shops with a wide variety of international brands to local Thai products. The mall is also home to fast food places, bars, restaurants, cafes.

Next to Central Samui is the Central Samui Night Market, and Chaweng Night Market, which offer more cheap goods like beachwear, souvenirs, and handicrafts. There are also many boutique shops on Chaweng Road.

Lamai does not have a big shopping mall like Chaweng, but you can find almost everything at local small-scale shops on the main road, and at the night market. It has more local flavour rather than purely international brands.

In general, Chaweng is the place to go if you want a wider range of shopping experience with more luxury shopping, big brand stores, or super-modern malls. Lamai offers a more local and casual shopping experience.

Food

Both Lamai and Chaweng have good food scenes. You can easily find typical Thai food in both areas. These popular dishes like Pad Thai, Thai fried rice, mango sticky rice can be found at the street food stalls in the night markets and at the Thai restaurants.

As the more popular area, Chaweng has more options for international cuisine or westernised restaurants. There are also more fine dining options in Chaweng. Lamai has more local Thai restaurants and seafood places with some international options.

Attractions

In Chaweng, you can explore Chaweng Beach, Chaweng Beach Road, Central Samui Mall, and Si Khao Night Market. All of these attractions are located within walking distance or a short Grab taxi ride away from each other.

Within a short drive from Chaweng, you can head to the north to explore Bophut Fisherman Village, Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, and many other beaches like Bophut, Choeng Mon, Maenam, and Ban Tai.

Within Lamai, you can explore Lamai Beach, Had Lamai Road, Lamai Night Market, Grandfather & Grandmother Rocks, and Overlap Stones.

A short drive from Lamai, you can visit several famous attractions like Na Muang Waterfall, Wat Khunaram, Tarnim Magic Garden, and Wat Ratchathammaram Red Temple. It is also close to secluded beaches like Coral Cove Beach, Crystal Beach, and Lipa Noi Beach.

So, you have it, my comparison between Chaweng and Lamai. Overall, if you want to be in the heart of the island’s nightlife and shopping scene, Chaweng is where you’ll want to be. If you want a quieter vibe but still have easy access to a wide range of shops, restaurants, and bars, Lamai is a better choice.
