Is it Better to Stay in Koh Tao or Koh Phangan?
The simple answer is that, if you are into diving and snorkeling, Koh Tao is the better choice. If you’re into party and nightlife, Koh Phangan is a better choice. Koh Tao is best known as a world-class diving destination while Koh Phangan is best known for its Full Moon Party.

Another factor to consider is the wellness retreats. If you want to take yoga, wellness & detox retreats, Koh Phangan is the place for you. While Koh Phangan is known for its vibrant party scene, it is also home to several retreat centers where you can recharge your mind, body, and soul.
Both Koh Tao and Koh Phan appeal to me equally. I’m into beaches and hiking, so both islands are excellent for that. They both have rugged terrain with lots of viewpoints and hiking trails to explore. I’m not a party person, but I still found great places to chill and unwind.
Top recommended stays in Koh Tao:
- Mid-range: Koh Tao Heights Pool Villas
- Budget: Sensi Paradise Beach Resort
My recommended hotels in Koh Phangan:
- Luxury: Santhiya Koh Phangan Resort
- Mid-range: Amaya Boutique Resort
- Mid-range: Phangan Bayshore Resort
Location
The two neighboring islands are located in similar areas in the Gulf of Thailand. They both have frequent boat connections from nearby destinations like Surat Thani, Chumphon, and Koh Samui.

If you travel by road and sea from places in central Thailand like Bangkok and Hua Hin, it is better to take the boat in Chumphon at Thung Makham Noi Pier.
If you travel by road from places in South Thailand like Khao Sok, Khao Lak, Phuket, and Krabi, it is better to take the speed boat from Donsak Pier in Surat Thani.
Accommodations
Both islands have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. From backpacker hostels to luxury beachfront resorts, these islands have it all.

Just make sure that these islands are some of the most popular islands in Thailand, so accommodations are often filled out in the high season. If you are traveling to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao in the period from November to May, make sure to book your stay in advance to secure the best spot.
I was in Koh Phangan around New Year’s and extended my stay last minute, but couldn’t find any rooms in my budget range. Accommodation prices skyrocketed to ridiculous levels. So, I ended up heading to Koh Samui instead. It was also difficult to find a place in Samui, but I was lucky to find a spot.

Size
Koh Tao is a small island, around 7km long and 3km wide. If you are an active traveler, it is possible to walk around the island on foot. The island is quite hilly, so expect plenty of ups and downs if you’re walking.
Koh Phangan is one of the biggest islands in Thailand, around 15km long and 10 km wide. The island is fairly spread out, making it hard to get from one town to another on foot. As the bigger islands, Koh Phangan has a wider range of attractions, beaches, and activities.
Beaches
Both Koh Tao and Koh Phangan have beautiful white sandy beaches, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. Both islands have popular beaches as well as secluded spots that are hard to reach by road.
The beaches on Koh Tao tend to have rockier shorelines compared to those on Koh Phangan. With clearer waters, the beaches of Koh Tao provide more ideal conditions for snorkeling and diving.

Popular beaches on both islands are lined with resorts, beach bars, restaurants, as well as sunbeds and umbrellas. Busy beaches on Koh Tao include Sairee, Mae Haad, Chalok Baan Kao, Freedom Beach, and Tanote Bay Beach.
Popular beaches on Koh Phangan are Haad Rin (location of the Full Moon Party), Zen Beach/ Srithanu Beach, and Mae Haad. The island is also home to numerous beaches that have a quieter atmosphere but still easy access to the range of amenities like Chaloklum, Thong Nai Pan, and Haad Yao.
There are some remote spots on these islands. On Koh Tao, you can find places like Mango Bay, which is difficult to get to by road. The dirt trail is rough and uneven, with many hills along the way. It is best to explore this place by boat, and the boat tour around the island will usually take you to this spot.

In Koh Phangan, you can find secluded spots like Bottle Beach. It’s difficult to reach the beach by scooter because the dirt road is in poor condition.
It is possible to walk down Bottle Beach from the main road to the Bottle Beach Viewpoint for around an hour. You can take a 4-wheel drive or take a boat from nearby Haad Khom, Chaloklum Beach, and Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach.

Nightlife
If you are a party animal, Koh Phangan is better than Koh Tao. Koh Phangan is best known for its Full Moon Party, which is a legendary beach festival held monthly on Haad Rin Beach.

The Full Moon party attracts thousands of partygoers from around the world, known for neon body paint, fire shows, loud music, and dancing till dawn.
Other beaches and towns in Koh Phangan offer more relaxed nightlife than in Haad Rin. The nightlife in Thong Sala, for example, is more about exploring the night markets and local food.
Koh Tao has a good selection of bars, night clubs, and restaurants, especially in the main towns like Sairee Beach and Mae Haad Beach. You can have a good night out, but it’s not as crazy as in Haad Rin on Koh Phangan.
Viewpoints
Both islands have rugged and hilly landscapes, offering many viewpoints with stunning views. Most viewpoints are only accessible via the hiking trail.
John-Suwan Viewpoint is the most popular viewpoint in Koh Tao. It is located on the southern tip of the island, offering a panoramic view of Chalok Baan Kao and Shark Bay.

There are dozens of other viewpoints clustered on the northern part of Koh Tao. You can check out the Grape viewpoint, Summit Viewpoint, Sunset Viewpoint.
If you are a confident driver, you can even drive to the top of the viewpoint. It is very dangerous though as the road to these viewpoints are often narrow, steep, and in bad condition.
In Koh Phangan, the most famous viewpoint is perhaps the Bottle Beach Viewpoint. You can hike for around 20 minutes from the parking area to reach this viewpoint, offering a stunning overlook of Bottle Beach’s crescent-shaped bay.
There are also many other viewpoints in Phangan like Khao Raa Viewpoints and Haad Yuan Viewpoints. The island is also home to several bars that have stunning views of the ocean. You can check out Amsterdam Bar near the island’s main town or 420 Club Phangan near Mae Haad and Koh Ma.
Hiking Opportunities
There are lots of hiking opportunities on Koh Tao and Koh Phangan due to their mountainous terrain. You can hike up to the viewpoints, lighthouses, or down to the beaches.
Some trails require a short hike while others require a good level of fitness. Some easy trails in Koh Tao are the John-Suwan Viewpoint or the coastal trail along the west coast that connect Chalok Baan Kao, to Aow June Juea, Tao Thong, Sai Nuan, Jansom Bay, and Mae Haad.

If you like challenging and long hiking trails, you can check out the trail to the Grape viewpoint, Summit Viewpoint, or to the Light House.
Some easy to moderate viewpoints in Koh Phangan include the Bottle Beach Viewpoint and Dom Sila Viewpoint. The more difficult trails are the Haad Yuan Viewpoint and Khao Raa Viewpoint.
Waterfalls
While Koh Tao does not have many well-known or large waterfalls, Koh Phangan has a range of waterfalls to explore and swim in the middle of the jungle.

You can find numerous waterfalls inside Namtok Than Sadet National Park, as well as some waterfalls near Thong Sala -the island’s main town like Phaeng Noi, and Khao Raa Waterfall.
These waterfalls are best to visit during or just after the rainy season (May to November) for fuller waterfalls. Some waterfalls require a bit of hiking, so wear comfortable shoes.
Tourist Amenities
Both islands have a wide range of tourist amenities. You can find restaurants, bars, shops, convenient stores, massage shops, ATMs, and motorbike rentals in most popular areas.
Night Markets
Koh Tao has limited night markets. You can find one small food market in front of the 7-Seelvent near the main road and the walking street in Sairee Beach. The market has several stalls selling fruits, chicken, and other Thai street food.

Koh Phangan has several night markets, mostly centered around the island’s main town, Thong Sala. You can explore Phangan Food Court, Pantip Night Market, Saturday Walking Street Market, Night Market Cafe Vintage in Baan Tai. These markets are great places to eat street food, and buy souvenirs.
Food
Koh Phangan has a wider range of food with lots of healthy and vegetarian options due to its growing wellness community. You will find more foreign-owned businesses and a greater abundance of international food options, catering to a wider range of tastes.

You can try both local Thai street food and international dishes like Vietnamese, Mexican, French, Italian, or Japanese. These can be found at the night markets or independent restaurants and cafes.
Koh Tao also has a good range of restaurants and cafes, but the food scene is more about local Thai food. There are several restaurants serving international cuisine but not as many as in Koh Phangan.
Snorkeling and Diving
Koh Tao is an obvious choice for snorkeling and diving. Its crystal-clear waters, abundant marine life, and numerous dive schools make it a paradise for underwater enthusiasts.

Whether you’re a beginner wanting to get certified or an experienced diver looking to explore vibrant coral reefs and swim with turtles and reef sharks, Koh Tao is the place to go.
From both Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, you can take a boat trip to nearby Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, which is a popular snorkeling and diving spot in the region. It is closer to Koh Phangan but is also possible to take a day trip to this island from Koh Tao.
Yoga and Wellness Retreat
Koh Phangan has become a hub for wellness tourism, with numerous yoga retreats, meditation centers, detox programs, and holistic healing resorts. If you are seeking relaxation and spiritual rejuvenation, Koh Phangan is the place to go.
Most wellness centers are located on the northern part of Phangan, away from the bustling Haad Rin Beach (on the southern tip area of the island).
Getting to and Getting Around
The only way to reach Koh Tao and Koh Phangna is by speedboat. There are no airports in these islands. The nearest airport is in Koh Samui.

You can take a flight to Koh Samui international airport, then take boats to either Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Koh Phangan is only a 30 minutes boat ride away, while the boat ride to Koh Tao ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
There are also speed boats from mainland Chumphon and Surat Thani to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Koh Phangan is a bit closer to Donsak Pier in mainland Surat Thani and Koh Samui.
The speedboat ride from Donsak to Thongsala Pier in Koh Phangan is around 1.5-2 hours, to Mae Haad Pier in Koh Tao is around 3 hours.
Koh Tao is closer to the pier in mainland Chumphon. The speed boat ride from Lomprayah Pier in Chumphon to Koh Tao is around 2 hours, to Koh Phangan is around 3.5 hours.
The best way to explore these islands is to rent a scooter, but make sure that you are confident and experience driving to do so. These islands have extremely steep and winding roads, which are very dangerous for novice drivers.
Koh Tao is small and can be explored on foot if you are fit and enjoy hiking. Otherwise, you can use Songthaew or around the island for boat tours.
Koh Phangan is larger and more spread out, making it hard to explore the island on foot. If you don’t drive, you can take a guided tour, hire a private driver, or use local songthaew taxis.
Songthaews taxis are pretty expensive on both islands. No riding share services like Grab or Bolt on both Koh Tao and Phangan.
