Basically, if you’re into the Full Moon Party or attending a wellness retreat, Koh Phangan is the best choice. If you are looking for a well-rounded destination with more infrastructure, shops, family-friendly activities, and western conveniences, Koh Samui is the place to go.

Koh Samui is a more developed island with a wider range of amenities, including shopping centers, international establishments, and modern facilities. It has an airport, making it easier accessible by air.
Koh Phangan is a less developed island with a more laid-back and bohemian atmosphere. It is best known for its Full Moon Party and strong health and wellness scene. The island has no airport, and the only way to reach it is by sea. The closest airport to Phangan is Samui Airport.
Koh Phangan is more ideal for backpackers, digital nomads, yoga retreats, and party-goers. Koh Samui often attracts honeymooners, families, older travelers, and all-inclusive tourists.
I enjoyed my stay on both islands equally. I’m all about sightseeing, hitting the beaches, and cruising around on a scooter, so these two islands were a perfect fit for me. If you’ve got the time, it’s worth splitting your stay between both islands. It’s what a lot of people do, and it’s totally worth it.

Both islands have a wide variety of food, including local street food and western dishes. I personally feel that Koh Phangan has more vegan and healthy food options because wellness retreat is one of the things that this island is known for.
Koh Samui has more upscale dining options. In addition to local cuisine, it also has many fast food chains like Mc Donald, KFC, and Burger King.
Temples & Cultural Attractions

Viewpoints & Hiking Opportunities
Both islands have mountainous terrain, with plenty of viewpoints and hiking trails. I personally prefer Koh Phangan for hiking than Koh Samui. I actually did more hiking in Phangan than in Samui.

In Koh Phangan, I hiked to Khao Raa Viewpoint (challenging trail), Bottle Beach Viewpoint (easy trail), Haad Yuan Viewpoint and Beach (moderate with some steep part trail), and Dom Sila Viewpoint (moderate trail).
In Koh Samui, I used my scooter to reach most viewpoints. The roads to most viewpoints are steep and winding, but I managed to reach them all by scooter without issues.
Difficult viewpoints to reach on a scooter include Overlap Stone 1,2,3 and Phra Buddha Dīpankara. Other viewpoints like Lad Koh Viewpoint and Hin Ta Hin Yai are easily accessible from the main road.
In Samui, I only take a hike at the Hin Lad Waterfall. It was a round 1 hour hike roundtrip and you can swim in the middle of a peaceful jungle.

Both islands have a good range of waterfalls to explore. If you are visiting them during the rainy season (May to November) or just 1-2 months after the rainy season, you must check out these waterfalls.

From Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, you can easily take boat trips to nearby islands like Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park and Koh Tao. These islands are known for their crystal clear water and ideal condition for snorkeling and diving.
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park has similar sea distance to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, but Koh Tao is closer and easier to access from Koh Phangan.
Getting to and Getting Around
Both islands are easily accessible by speed boat from mainland Thailand and other islands like Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Koh Tao. One advantage of Koh Samui is its international airport, which makes it more easily accessible by air.

These two islands are large, and the best ways to explore is to rent a scooter and a car. Also keep in mind that they are mountainous islands with lots of steep and curvy roads, so make sure that you’re a confident driver to drive.
Otherwise, there are plenty of local songthaews on both islands. It is expensive for solo travelers though, if you are with a group, you can share the cost easily.
As a more developed island, Koh Samui has more riding shares services like Grab, Bolt, and InDrive. Koh Phangan doesn’t have these services even in the island’s main town, Thong Sala.
