I previously wrote an article on my website about the similarities and differences between Ao Nang and Krabi Town. In this article, I’ll focus on the comparison between Ao Nang and Railay.

I’ve been to many parts of Krabi Province, including places like Ao Nang, Railay, and Krabi Town. Based on my firsthand experience, I can offer you insightful and reliable information. If you’re wondering whether it’s better to stay in Ao Nang or Railay, keep reading.

Is it Better to Stay in Ao Nang or Railay?

I prefer to stay in Ao Nang and take a full day trip to Railay Beach. Many others do the same. Most attractions within Railway can be easily explored within a full day on foot. Within one day, I was able to explore all the beaches, caves, viewpoints in Railay and even hike to Tonsai Beach.

Ao Nang has more tourist amenities and better location to explore all the beaches, islands, and inland attractions in the Krabi region.

Railay is a better place to stay if you are rock climbers and those who just want to chill at the beach the whole holiday. The location of Railay is quite isolated and can only be reached by boats, making it inconvenient to explore other island attractions of Krabi.

If you have time, consider splitting your stay between Ao Nang and Railay, ideally, spend one night in Railay and the rest in Ao Nang. Staying overnight in Railay allows you to enjoy a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere when all the day-trippers leave and before they arrive, and you can explore more deeply.

Location

Ao Nang is a small beach town located in the mainland Krabi Province, 20 km away from Krabi Town, and 30 km away from Krabi International Airport. Ao Nang is easily accessible via both road and sea. It is just 40 minutes drive from the airport by taxi.

Railay is located 10 minutes long tail boat rides from Ao Nang. It is part of the mainland Krabi but only accessible by boat due to the surrounding cliffs that cut it off from direct road access.

To reach Railay from the airport, you need to take a taxi to one of the piers in Ao Nang, Ao Nam Mao, or Krabi Town, then take long tail boats to Railay.

If you want a convenient location to explore all attractions in Krabi and island hopping, Ao Nang is a better base. Railay is a bit isolated, and you have to take boats to Ao Nang if you want to explore other sights on the mainland.

From Ao Nang, you can easily take boat trips to The Four Islands, Hong Islands, and Koh Phi Phi. You can visit inland sights like the night markets, Tiger Cave temple, Dragon’s Crest Mountains, and Emerald Pool.

Accommodations

Ao Nang has a wider range of accommodations for all budgets. You can find both budget-friendly hostels, mid-range guest houses, and luxury resorts. You can easily find a place to stay within your budget range if you book well in advance.

Railay has limited accommodations, mostly mid-range and high end options. Hotels are located along the beachfront areas and some inland on the hill with breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs and the ocean.

Whether you choose to stay, make sure to book in advance at least a couple of months to find good quality hotels. Both areas are very popular with tourists and hotels often sell out quickly, especially in the peak season from November to May.

If you choose to stay in Railay, be sure to pack light, as you’ll likely need to carry your luggage while wading through shallow water to reach the shore.

Nightlife

Ao Nang has a wider range of restaurants, bars, night clubs, and night markets. If you are after a vibrant nightlife scene, Ao Nang is the place to stay. Lots of bars and night clubs concentrated in the main road of Ao Nang, making it easy for bar hopping.

Railay has more laid-back nightlife compared to Ao Nang. But there are still several restaurants and bars on the walking street where you can enjoy the relaxing nightlife.

Tourist Amenities

As the tourist center of Krabi, Ao Nang has a broader selection of tourist amenities. You can find many travel agencies, massage parlors, convenience stores, motorbike rentals, and tourist shops. If you are looking for a tour, you can shop around before picking the best options.

Railay walking street is also lined with tourist amenities like convenience stores, massage parlors, rock climbing schools, travel agencies. You will generally have access to all amenities for a comfortable stay.

There are no 7-11 in Railay while Ao Nang has several 7-11 shops. Railay has some small local minimarts. They don’t have a wide range of goods and the prices are higher than in the mainland. If you want to bring snacks to Railay, it is better to buy it in Ao Nang.

Food

Ao Nang has a wider range of food, including both local Thai and international dishes. It is home to several international fast food chains like Mc Donald, Burger King, and Starbucks. Affordable street food is available at the night markets, while fine dining options can be found at upscale restaurants.

Railay has several small family-run restaurants offering more local foods and a cozier dining atmosphere. There aren’t any big fast food chains on this island.

Prices

Ao Nang is significantly more cost-effective across accommodation, dining, and access to tours. Railay offers stunning scenery and serenity, but expect to pay a premium, particularly if you’re staying overnight.

A smart strategy is to base yourself in Ao Nang for better value, and visit Railay on day trips, so you can enjoy beauty without breaking the bank.

Atmosphere

Ao Nang is busy and packed with tourists both day and night. Lots of noise from road traffic and crowds. It has a lively, bustling, and touristy atmosphere. It is ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers who are looking for convenient access to all tourist amenities, and close proximity to famous attractions.

Railay has a more laid back atmosphere, and scenic landscapes. It is cut off from the mainland by dramatic limestone cliffs, no cars, no loud roads, just walking paths, beaches, and jungle.

Railay is also packed with tourists during the day, but it becomes quieter by late afternoon, once all the day-trippers return to Ao Nang. At night, it’s very chill with a few reggae-style beach bars and fire shows. It is great for couples, solo travelers seeking calm, or nature lovers.

Beaches

If you’re visiting Krabi for the beaches, you should absolutely spend time at Railay. Railay has better beaches than Ao Nang.

The beaches in Railay, especially at Phra Nang Beach and Railay West Beach, have white sand and stunning views of the limestone cliffs. The beaches at Railay are good for swimming, kayaking, climbing, and relaxing.

Ao Nang beach has stunning views of the limestone cliffs. It is a swimmable beach but not the best for swimming. It is a good spot for relaxing, sunbathing, watching the sunset, and doing yoga.

There is lots of noise from long tail boats at the middle sections of Ao Nang Beach and Railay West Beach. In Railay, you can find a peaceful escape from boat traffic at Phra Nang Beach.

From Railay, you can walk to its neighbor, Tonsai Beach, which offers a quieter atmosphere. There are also a couple of beaches within walking distance from Ao Nang Beach, including Pai Plong Beach and Nopharat Thara Beach. These beaches are a bit quieter compared to Ao Nang main beach.

Rock Climbing and Hiking

Railay is the best for climbing, globally renowned for limestone cliffs. You can find climbing areas at Railay East, Railay West, and Phra Nang Beach. The neighbor Tonsai Beach is known for more challenging climbs.

Railay offers Routes for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced sport climbers. It is home to dozens of certified climbing schools like King Climbers, Basecamp Tonsai, and Real Rocks.

Ao Nang itself does not offer real climbing routes. It’s a great base to book a climbing tour to Railay or Tonsai. Many climbing schools offer day trips from Ao Nang with hotel pickup and boat transfers to Railay.

If you don’t take a rock climbing course, there are lots of free hiking opposites around Railay. You can hike to Bat Cave, to Railay East Viewpoint, the Lagoon (challenging rock climbing), the Railay West Viewpoint, and the hike to Tonsai Beach.

In Ao Nang, you can do some hiking at the Monkey trail connecting Ao Nang beach and Pai Plong Beach. It’s a short but very steep trail, with a bamboo handrail along the way.

For more hiking experience, you can check out the 1,260 steep steps at the Tiger Cave Temple near Ao Nang and Krabi Town. You can visit Dragon’s Crest Mountain, which is located just north west of Ao Nang for more challenging hiking.

Attractions

Both Ao Nang and Railay have plenty of attractions to explore. Railay has beaches, viewpoints, caves, and lots of outdoor activities such as swimming, kayaking, and rock climbing.

In Ao Nang, you can explore the beaches, night markets, island hopping tours, and visit inland attractions like Krabi Town Night Markets, Tiger Cave Temples, or Dragon’s Crest Mountain.

I hope you find some useful information about Ao Nang and Railay. Generally speaking, most people stay in Ao Nang then take a day trip to Railay. You can also consider staying a night in Railay to enjoy its nightlife. If you’re in Krabi for rock climbing, it is better to stay in Railay for easy access to climbing sites.
