Phuket and Pattaya are two famous beach destinations in Thailand. Phuket is perhaps the country’s most popular island and Pattaya is a party beach town near Bangkok.
In this article, I will outline the differences and similarities between Phuket and Pattaya by comparing their locations, accommodations, beaches, attractions, nightlife, shopping, and food.
I’ve traveled to both places, so I can give you some useful recommendations based on personal experiences. If you’re searching for whether to visit Phuket or Pattaya, keep reading.
Is it better to visit Phuket or Pattaya?
I personally enjoy Phuket more than Pattaya because Phuket has a wide selection of beaches, activities, and is a great base for exploring Southern Thailand and island hopping. Pattaya is more of a party city, but I also have a great time exploring its beaches, night markets, and boat tours to Koh Larn.

Generally speaking, Phuket is better than Pattaya if you want beautiful beaches, a wide range of experiences, and easy access to famous islands in the Andaman Sea such as Koh Phi Phi, James Bond island, or Similan Islands.
Pattaya is better than Phuket if you want a beach holiday close to Bangkok. The highlight of Pattaya is wild nightlife and adult entertainments, which are ideal for party goers. Pattaya might not be the best choice for families or couples looking for a peaceful environment.
Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, and it has many different areas for all kinds of travelers. Whether you’re families, couples, solo travelers looking for a vibrant beach town, quiet area, or historic old town, Phuket has it all!
Some people mentioned that Pattaya is cheaper than Phuket, but from my experience, they have quite similar prices, especially on accommodations. If you’re a long term traveler, you might benefit from cheaper long-term rent in Pattaya. Taxis and massages in Pattaya are a bit cheaper than in Phuket.
My recommend hotels in Phuket:
- Luxury: Phuket Graceland Resort
- Mid-range: Quality Beach Resort
- Budget: Seven Seas Hotel
My top hotel picks in Pattaya:
- Luxury: Amari
- Mid-range: DeeProm
- Budget: Siam View Hotel and Residence
Location & How to Get There
Phuket is located in the Andaman Sea, South Thailand, 820km south of Bangkok. Pattaya is located in the Eastern Gulf of Thailand, around 150km southeast of Bangkok. To travel between Pattaya and Phuket, you’ll likely have to stop over in Bangkok.

Phuket is well-connected by air, road, and sea. The island has an international airport, so you can easily take flights from other parts of Thailand and some international destinations.
There are also many direct boat connections from other islands in the Andaman Sea like Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao, Koh Lipe, Ao Nang, and Railay. From nearby Khao Lak and Khao Sok, you can take a taxi to Phuket.
Pattaya has an airport but it’s not as popular as Phuket airport. Most visitors will arrive at Bangkok airport then take a taxi or bus to get to Pattaya.
Beaches
The beaches in Phuket, in my opinion, are generally better than beaches in Pattaya. If you want a classic tropical beach holiday, Phuket is the place to go. Phuket is a large island, so it has a variety of beach-types, including party beach towns and secluded spots.

If you want a wild party vibe, you can check out Patong Beach. If you want a quieter atmosphere than Patong but still lively, check out Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kamamala, or Bang Tao beach. For a more peaceful experience, have a look at Nai Harn, Nai Thon, or Bang Tao Beach.
There are also small and less developed beaches around Phuket such as Freedom Beach, Haad Laem Sing, or Yanui Beach. All the beaches have white sand, clean water, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and watersport activities. There are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for rent on all popular beaches.
If you want pristine beaches, you can take day trips to nearby islands such as Phi Phi Island, James Bond island, or Koh Hong.
The main beaches in Pattaya such as Pattaya Beach, Jomtien Beach, Wong Amat Beach, are generally less pristine compared with beaches in Phuket. It’s also lined with high-rise buildings, giving it a more urban atmosphere, unlike Phuket, which is more surrounded by nature.
Accommodations

Both Phuket and Pattaya have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets and preferences. You can find budget backpacker hotels and luxury beachfront resorts in both places. From my observations, there are more high-rise resorts in Pattaya than in Phuket.
There are some cute boutique hotels in Phuket Old Town, so if you want to step back in time, you can choose to stay there. But there is no beach within walking distance from the old town though.
Both Phuket and Pattaya are extremely popular tourist destinations, so I recommend you book your stay well in advance to secure your hotel.
I booked hotels in both places at the last minute and there weren’t many good places to choose from. I nearly ended up with no place to stay. The prices were also sky rockets. So be sure to book in advance for peace of mind.

Nightlife
Both Phuket and Pattaya are some of the best places to go in Thailand for nightlife. You can find red light districts and wild nightlife areas in both places.

If you want non-stop party energy, Pattaya is a better place to go. The atmosphere is often wild, chaotic, with lots of bars, go-go bars, nightclubs, and cabaret shows.
Pattaya is known as a party destination in Thailand, so the nightlife is more intense than in Phuket. There are several dedicated nightlife zones such as Walking Street, Soi LK Metro, and various other bar streets.
As a large island, the nightlife in Phuket is more diverse, so you can easily find both relaxed beach-club drinks to full-on club nights, mixing chill with wild depending on mood.
The center of the nightlife in Phuket is Bangla Road in Patong. The 400m long road is packed with neon-lit bars, beer bars, and nightclubs that go until early morning.
For a bit quieter nightlife, you can check Kata, Karon, or Kamala. For trendy beach clubs, have a look at Bang Tao and Surin area. If you want to browse night markets and find authentic cheap food, check out the night markets and local restaurants in Phuket Old Town.
In addition to the bar scene, both places have a wide range of night markets, which are good alternatives for those who want to spend a night out but not in the bars and night clubs.
Shopping
Both Phuket and Pattaya have good shopping scenes with many markets and malls. Pattaya has a higher concentration of shopping malls in a compact area. Shopping malls in Phuket are quite spread out, concentrated in Patong and Phuket Old Town area.

Popular malls in Phuket are Central Phuket near the old town and Jungceylon Patong. These places offer luxury brands, cosmetics, and lifestyle shopping. The old Town also has many trendy shops to explore.
Additionally, there are dozens of night markets scattering around the island where you can find budget souvenirs. Some of my favorite night markets in Phuket are Chillva, Indy Market, Kata Market, and Banzaan Market.
Some best malls in Pattaya include Central Pattaya, Terminal 21 Pattaya, Outlet Mall Pattaya, or Royal Garden Plaza. The malls in Pattaya are more affordable and have a less luxurious variety than Phuket.
Pattaya also has a selection of nightly markets where you can find bargain souvenirs. They are Thepprasit Night Market, Pattaya Night Bazaar, or Jomtien Night Market.
Food
You can easily find Thai and international dishes in both Phuket and Pattaya. Pattaya has more variety of international food due to largely expats living there. Russian, Indian, Japanese, Korean, European food everywhere.

Seafood is also a popular dish in both places. There are many seafood restaurants and areas dedicated to seafood such as Rawai Seafood Market in Phuket.
I personally prefer the food scene in Phuket more than Pattaya. The island has more cafés and Instagram-style restaurants. There is a good food scene in the old town and at Chillva Night Market. In Pattaya, I like to eat food at the food court in Terminal 21.
Cultural attractions
Both Phuket and Pattaya have some nice temples and cultural attractions to explore. I prefer Phuket more when it comes to sightseeing and exploring cultural and historical sites.

The historic old town of Phuket has charming Sino‑Portuguese style buildings, colourful streets, old‑style shops‑houses, and trendy cafés. The area also has many Chinese Temples, mosques, and museums to visit. The island has two key temples, which are Wat Chalong and Phuket Big Buddha.
Highlight cultural attractions of Pattaya are the unique Sanctuary of Truth, Wat Phra Yai, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, and Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan).
Viewpoints and Hiking
If you like hiking, Phuket is a better place to go. It has mountainous terrain and the beaches, so you can find the trail in the jungle, as well as the coastal trails. I like to hike the challenge trail to the Money Viewpoint and the short trail to Black Rock Viewpoint.

Phuket also has more beautiful viewpoints than Pattaya. Some of my favorite viewpoints on the island are Karon Viewpoint, the viewpoint at the Big Buddha, Windmill Viewpoint, Promthep Cape, and Khao Rang Viewpoint.
In Pattaya, there is a nice viewpoint near the Pattaya Sign, where you can view the whole Pattaya Beach and the high rise buildings in the city.
Island Hopping

There are more island hopping tours in Phuket than in Pattaya. You can easily take a boat trip to world-renowned islands such as Phi Phi island, James Bond island, or Similand islands. These places boast stunning landscapes, featuring dramatic limestone cliffs and picture-perfect beaches.
From Pattaya, you can take a boat trip to Koh Larn (Coral island) for more pristine beaches. The boat ride is only 30 minutes, and it takes you to a different world compared to Pattaya. The beaches in Koh Larn are more white sand and crystal clear than in mainland Pattaya.
Getting Around
Riding share services such as Grab, Bolt, and InDrive are widely available in both Phuket and Pattaya. Taxis in Phuket are a bit more expensive than other parts of Thailand including Pattaya.
In Phuket, I rented a scooter to explore the island. In Pattaya, I explore on foot and by using Grab Bike. I used a public ferry to get to Koh Larn.
