Is it better to stay in Phuket or Krabi?
Generally speaking, Phuket is more popular and more developed than Krabi, making it a better location for those who want easily accessible, wide range of tourist amenities, great nightlife, and shopping.
Both places have an international airport, but there’re more direct international flights to Phuket than Krabi.

Krabi has a more stunning natural landscape with striking limestone cliffs and crystal clear white sand beaches. Beaches on Phi Phi or Koh Hong are some of the best in the world. The region is much quieter than Phuket, making it an ideal spot for relaxation, nature lovers, and rock climbing.
Both Phuket and Krabi are located around the Andaman Sea, so no matter where you choose to stay, you can easily do island hopping. Phuket, Ao Nang, Railay/ Tonsai, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Hong, James Bond, and Koh Lanta are all well connected to each other by boat.
I enjoyed my visit to both Phuket and Krabi. I rented a scooter in each area to explore its region, which allowed me to see most of each place. In Krabi Province, I stayed in Ao Nang, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Koh Phi Phi. I used these places as a base to explore its surrounding attractions.
In Phuket, I like to explore the Old Town, especially around sunset to evening. It’s incredibly photogenic, with colorful old houses and street art. The food is also tasty and cheap. From the old town, I visited the Chillva Market, went hiking at Monkey Hill, and visited Phromthep Cape viewpoint.
In terms of beaches, I like Nai Harn, Kata, Karon, Patong, and Surin. These are popular beaches with easy access to many tourist amenities. Other secluded beaches like Freedom Beach, Haad Laem Sing, and Banana Beach are also worth checking out.
Krabi Province is large. Most people use Ao Nang as the base to explore the region. It’s full of tourist amenities, and is a convenient location to explore both mainland attractions and island hopping.
Some of my favorite things to do in Krabi region is rock climbing in Railay, enjoy the nightlife in Ao Nang, visiting night markets in Krabi Town, hiking at Dragon Crest and Tiger Cave Temple, driving scooter around Koh Lanta, boat trip to Koh Hong, and walk around Koh Phi Phi.
Many people, like me, visit both Phuket and Krabi within a single trip, so if your time is allowed, you can consider staying in both places. They are well-connected by sea and by road. You can easily take a boat and bus to travel between two places.
First-time visitors to Thailand tend to choose Phuket over Krabi. They often take boat trips to Koh Phi Phi, which is part of the Krabi region, giving them a good sense of the area’s natural scenery.
My top pick accommodations in Krabi:
- Luxury: Anana Ecological Resort
- Mid-range: Centara Ao Nang Resort
- Budget: Phu Pha Aonang Resort
My top pick hotels in Phuket:
- Luxury: Phuket Graceland Resort
- Mid-range: Quality Beach Resort
- Budget: Seven Seas Hotel
Location & How to Get There
Both Phuket and Krabi are located in the southern part of Thailand, on the Andaman Sea. It is around two hour boat ride from Phuket to Ao Nang, Krabi. If you prefer to avoid the boat ride in rough sea conditions, you can take the road between the two places.

Phuket is an island, but it is connected with mainland Thailand by a bridge, so it is easy to get to Phuket by a car or bus. Additionally, the island has an international airport, so you can have direct flights from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and some international destinations.
Krabi is a large province that includes some famous places such as Ao Nang, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Krabi Town. It’s also easily accessible by road and by air. Krabi Town has an international airport, but it’s smaller, less busy, and offers fewer international flights compared to Phuket.
You can reach both Phuket and Krabi from anywhere on the Andaman Sea by boat. There boat connections from other islands such as Ko Yao Yai, Koh Yai Noi, JameBond Island, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Lipe to Phuket and Krabi.

Size & Landscape
Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, around 50km long and 18km wide. The island offers diverse landscapes with a mountainous interior and beaches lining its coast. The roads at some sections of Phuket are very steep, so be cautious if you drive a scooter.
Krabi Province is also a large province that consists of many beaches, mountains, and islands. The mainland Krabi is home to Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi Town. The Amadan Sea of Krabi is home to the famous Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, and Hong islands.
Krabi is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, which rise sharply from the sea. Railay Beach has towering cliffs and is a top spot for rock climbing. Koh Phi Phi also has hilly terrain, and Koh Lanta is a bit flatter.
Beaches
Both Phuket and Krabi have beautiful beaches to explore. These beaches are great for swimming, sunbathing, chilling, watching the sunset, and enjoy water activities such as jet skiing.

You can find busy beaches and quiet beaches in both Phuket and Krabi. The beaches in mainland Krabi such as Ao Nang or Tubkaek Beach are so so, but the beaches in places like Koh Phi Phi and Koh Hong are stunning with white powdered sand and crystal clear water.
Most beaches in Phuket are located on the west coast of the island. The most busy beach is Patong Beach located in the middle west coast. This is the night life hub of Phuket. Other popular beaches are Kata, Karon, and Kamala.
The beaches are quieter further north and south of Phuket such as Nai Harn, Nai Thon, or Mai Khao. The longest beach on the island is Mai Khao Beach. There are some beaches on the south east coast but they’re not as beautiful as the beaches on the west.
Krabi is home to a diverse array of beaches. The most beautiful beaches in the region are at Koh Phi Phi and Koh Hong island. Koh Hong Beach and Maya Bay have powdery white sand, clear water, you can see fish from the water.
The beaches in the mainland are convenient but not the region’s most beautiful beaches. There are Ao Nang, Tubkaek Beach, Klong Muang Beach, and Pai Plong Beach. You can spot stunning views of the limestone cliffs from all beaches in Krabi.
Accommodations

Both Phuket and Ao Nang have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. As the more developed island, Phuket has more luxury resort options, so if you’re looking for something luxurious, Phuket is the place to go.
You can find the island’s top resorts on famous beaches like Patong, Kata, Karon, Surin, and Bang Tao. Accommodations are extremely on high demand in the tourist season from November to May, so make sure to book well in advance to secure your stay.
Nightlife
Both Phuket and Krabi have good nightlife scenes, but Phuket in general, is the better place to go if you want to party. The Heart of Phuket’s Nightlife is Patong Beach.

Bangla Road is Patong’s most famous street for nightlife, lined with bars, nightclubs, go-go bars, and shows. There are plenty of bars, clubs, Muay Thai matches, and night markets scattering around the area.
If you want a slightly quieter atmosphere compared to Patong but still lively, you can check out Kata and Karon. For cool night markets and restaurants with historic atmosphere, you can head to Phuket Old Town.
The nightlife scene in Krabi is diverse, with each area offering something different. Ao Nang is the nightlife center in the mainland area of Krabi. The main street is lined with bars, restaurants, night markets, and street food stalls.
Koh Phi Phi also has a bustling nightlife, and it’s particularly popular among backpackers. For more quieter nightlife and authentic atmosphere, you can check out Krabi Town or Koh Lanta. Krabi Town has a selection of night markets where you can eat cheap delicious local dishes.
Shopping

Phuket is the most popular and developed island, so it is, without a doubt, the best place to go for shopping. Patong and Phuket Old Town are the top place to go shopping on the island.
The island is home to major shopping malls, Central Phuket and Jungcelon. These are beautiful malls with a wide variety of both mid-range, luxury Thai and international products.
Additionally, you can shop for bargain souvenirs and handicrafts at local markets. My favorite ones are Chillva Market, Phuket Old Town Indy Market, or Banzaan Market.
Krabi does not have any major shopping malls, there are independent shops and many markets where you can buy typical Thai souvenirs and beach accessories.
My favorite markets in the region are the Krabi Town weekend Walking Street Market, and Ao Nang Landmark Night Market. These places have some beautiful handmade jewelry, trendy clothes, and local arts.
Food

You can easily find both local Thai food and international dishes in popular areas of Phuket and Krabi. Phuket has a wider range of fine dining options. Food in the Krabi region has more halal options as there are large of Muslim communities living in this area.
In Phuket, I like to eat in Phuket Old Town. The food is cheap, authentic, and has a more local atmosphere. In Krabi, I prefer dining in Krabi Town for the same reasons, it’s affordable and authentic.
Hiking
Both Phuket and Krabi are good for hiking. You can find trails in both places if you’re hiker enthusiastic. Additionally to mountain hiking, there are rock climbing opportunities in Krabi.

In Krabi, I recommend checking out the short trail called the Monkey trail connecting Ao Nang beach and Pai Plong Beach. It is a steep trail in some parts and you can encounter some monkeys on the Ao Nang beach side.
Other places I like to hike in Krabi are at Dragon’s Crest Mountain, Tiger Cave Temple, in Railay with the trail to the viewpoint and lagoon, and the trail around the island in Koh Phi Phi.
Phuket also has some good trails such as the trail to Monkey Hill Viewpoint near Phuket Old Town, the short trail to Black Rock Viewpoint, and the coastal trail between Nai Harn and Cape Krathing. You can hike from Kata/ Karon to the top of Big Buddha, or there is a trail from Patong to Kamala.
Cultural Attractions

Both Phuket and Krabi have some large and beautiful temples to explore. Famous temples in Phuket are Wat Chalong and the Big Budda. Some smaller temples are scattered around the island. If you’re visiting Promthep Cape at sunset, make sure to visit the peaceful Samnaksong Laem Phromthep.
Additionally, Phuket is home to an Old Town, located on the island’s east coast. The Old Town is full of old houses, temples, and museums. The Old buildings are very colorful with Sino-Portuguese architecture.
In Krabi, especially in the mainland, you can visit Tiger Cave temple, which requires a hike up to 1200 steep steps to reach the top. It is a beautiful complex with stunning views of the city.
Island Hopping

Both Phuket and Krabi are located in the Andaman Sea area, so it is easy to take boat tours and visit nearby attractions from either location.
Within the Anandan Sea, there are boat connections between Phuket, Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Railay, Koh Lanta, Ko Phi Phi, Koh Yao, James Bond island, and Hong islands. You can easily take a day trip within the region.
Mainland attractions like Khao Sok National Park and Khao Lak are about the same distance from both Phuket and Krabi, so you can visit them from either location.
Getting Around & Transportation
There are plenty of taxi options including riding share services such as Grab, Bolt, and InDrive in all popular tourist towns in Phuket and Krabi. The taxi cost in Phuket, in my opinion, is generally more expensive than in Krabi.
You can rent a scooter to explore its region. Phuket has mountainous terrain, so be cautious when driving. It was easier for me to drive in Krabi mainland and Koh Lata. No visitors’ vehicles are allowed in Koh Phi Phi, so most people get around on foot and by long tail boats.
You can easily get around on foot within each town such as Patong, Kata, Karon, Phuket Old Town, Ao Nang, or Krabi Town. To explore other areas, you can take a guided tour, hire a private driver, use a taxi, or have a private driver.
