Phuket or Koh Samui, which is better?

Phuket and Koh Samui are two popular islands in Thailand, located in the southern parts of the country. Both have beautiful beaches, a lively atmosphere, and a wide range of tourist amenities and activities.

In this article, I will compare Phuket and Koh Samui, focusing on their location, accommodations, beaches, cultural attractions, nightlife, shopping, and food. Since I’ve explored both islands, I can offer firsthand recommendations based on what I’ve seen and done.

Is it better to visit Phuket or Koh Samui?

I had a great time visiting both Phuket and Koh Samui. I rented a scooter on both islands, which allowed me to explore most of the beaches and attractions. Both islands have good nightlife, beaches, shopping malls, viewpoints, and night markets.

Koh Samui

Phuket is more popular than Koh Samui because it has a large international airport, a wider range of tourist amenities, and is a great base to many island hopping tours in the Andanman Sea.

Generally speaking, Phuket is better than Koh Samui if you are first-timers to Thailand who want an easily accessible, broader range of tourist amenities, easy boat trips to iconic islands such as Koh Phi Phi or James Bond island.

You can get to Phuket by air, road, and sea, while Koh Samui can only be reached by sea or air. Phuket Airport is larger than Koh Samui Airport and offers more international flights, making it more accessible.

Koh Samui is better than Phuket if you want a more relaxing beach holiday (still lively though), and easy boat trips to nearby islands in the Gulf of Thailand such as Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

If your time is allowed, you can visit both Phuket and Koh Samui. They are all located in South Thailand, just 55 minutes direct flights, so you can easily travel between the two islands. Other options are taking the combination of bus and boat.

Location & How to Get There

Both Phuket and Koh Samui are located in South Thailand. Phuket is located in the Andanman Sea, close to Phanga Nga Bay and Koh Phi Phi. Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand, close to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

Both islands have their own airports, so you can reach them by airplane. The airport in Phuket is more popular because it has more domestic and international flights. You can access these islands by boat from nearby islands and the mainland.

Additionally, Phuket is accessible by road as it’s connected to the mainland via a bridge. There is no road connection between Koh Samui and the mainland, so it’s only accessible by air and sea.

Size

Phuket is the largest island of Thailand, around 50km long and 17km wide. Koh Samui is the third largest island of Thailand, around 20km long and 17km wide. Phuket is roughly double the size of Koh Samui.

Both islands feature mountainous interiors and beautiful beaches along their coasts. Both islands have steep, winding roads, so if you’re renting a scooter, take extra care.

Beaches

Both Phuket and Koh Samui have a wide range of beaches for all preferences. You will be able to find both party beaches and secluded ones in each island.

Most popular beaches on two islands are well-equipped with umbrasalas, sunburners, and watersport rentals equipment. The beaches are great for swimming, sunbathing, and watching the sunset.

The beaches on Phuket are centered along the west coast. Most popular beaches are Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, and Bang Tao. You can find quieter places in the far south and far north of the island. They are Nai Thon, Mai Khao, or Nai Harn Beach.

Phuket also has some small remote beaches such as Freedom Beach, Haad Laem Sing, or Haad Laem Sing. There are some beaches on the south eastern coast but not as beautiful as the beaches on the west coast.

Accommodations

Both Phuket and Koh Samui have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets and preferences. You can easily find budget backpacker hostels and luxury beachfront resorts in both islands.

You’ll find more beachfront resorts (right on the sand) in Koh Samui’s main beaches, including Chaweng, Lamai, and Bophut. In contrast, resorts in Phuket’s popular beaches like Patong, Kata, and Karon are situated along the beach road, a short walk from the sand.

As the two most famous islands in Thailand, accommodations are often in high demand in both islands, especially in the high season from November to May. So, make sure to book well in advance to secure your stay.

Nightlife

Both Phuket and Koh Samui have diverse nightlife scenes, but Phuket is usually the better place to go for more intense nightlife and parties.

If you want a beachfront vibe party, Koh Samui has better options. Koh Samui offers many beach clubs with parties directly on the sand, whereas the nightlife in Phuket tends to be more inland.

The nightlife hub of Phuket is Patong, particularly Bangla Walking Street. The 400m long street is packed with go-go bars, clubs, and a more adult-oriented vibe.

For a quieter nightlife scene but still lively with bars and night markets, you can check out Kata, Karon, Kamala, or Bang Tao. You can also check out the nightlife in the old town with a range of cool nightmarkets, good authentic restaurants, and charming shop houses.

The nightlife hub of Koh Samui is Chaweng Beach. Here you’ll find a range of bars, nightclubs on the main road and along the beachfront.

If you want to avoid the wild nightlife of Chaweng, you can check out Lamai and Bophut. These places have trendy bars, restaurants, and good night markets but with a quieter vibe.

Shopping

Phuket has a wider range of shopping malls and night markets than Koh Samui. You can find both luxury international brands and cheap Thai souvenirs on both islands. If you’re looking for a variety of shopping experiences, Phuket will give you the most options.

Phuket has several shopping malls, with the two most famous ones being Jungcelong Mall in Patong and Central Phuket near Phuket Old Town.

In Koh Samui, you can see the island’s main shopping mall, Central Festival Samui mall in Chaweng. It’s modern and comfortable, but more compact than its Phuket counterparts.

In terms of night markets, Phuket has great selections of markets around the island. Patong and Phuket Old Town itself have several night markets to explore. Some of my favorite markets in Phuket are Chillva Market, Sunday Walking Street in Old Town, Indy Market, and Banzaan Market.

In Koh Samui, there are some good night markets in the main towns such as Chaweng Walking Street Night Market, Lamai Night Market, and Bophut’s Fisherman night market. In both islands, you can find local handicrafts, handmade jewelry, artwork, and plenty of Thai-inspired souvenirs.

Food

Both islands have wide selections of both fresh seafood, Thai food, and international dishes. You can enjoy food at local restaurants, from stalls in the night markets, or at the food courts in the shopping malls.

From my observations, there are more seafood stalls at the markets in Phuket than in Samui. You can find seafood at the Rawai Seafood Market, Banzaan, and Chillva Night Market.

The seafood in Samui is often seen at the restaurants in the main roads and at the beachfront in the areas of Chaweng, Lamai, and Bophut.

If you’re a foodie, you should check out Phuket Old Town. The town has many restaurants serving authentic local food at a more reasonable price than the beach towns.

Cultural attractions

Both Phuket and Koh Samui have good numbers of temples and cultural attractions to explore. Phuket is more culturally diverse with temples, museums, and well-preserved Sino-Portuguese colorful buildings. Koh Samui offers a more spiritual cultural experience with Buddhist temples and peaceful gardens.

Old Phuket Town is one of the most culturally rich areas in Phuket. It’s packed with old colonial buildings, vibrant street art, temples, and museums. Walking through the old town gives you a sense of Phuket’s historical mix of Thai, Chinese, and Portuguese influences.

Additionally, Phuket has some famous temples such as Big Buddha and Wat Chalong. Big Buddha has views of the island, while Wat Chalong has a beautiful architecture style.

Koh Samui is also home to several famous temples, including the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, and Wat Khunaram, which is famous for housing the mummified body of a monk. Additionally, you can visit the beautiful Tarnim Magic, which is a peaceful escape from the popular beachside attractions.

Viewpoints, and Hiking

Both islands have mountainous terrains, so there are plenty of viewpoints and hiking trails to explore. You can access most viewpoints by scooter, car, or by walking.

Some of my favorite viewpoints in Phuket are the Karon Viewpoint, Phromthep Cape, Windmill viewpoint, and Black Rock Viewpoint. I also enjoy the challenging hiking trail to Monkey Viewpoint near Phuket Old Town.

In Koh Samui, you must check out Overlap Stone 2, Hin Ta Hin Yai, Big Buddha, and Pra Buddha Dīpankara.

Waterfalls

Both islands have numerous waterfalls to explore. The waterfalls in Ko Samui are more popular than in Phuket as it’s often seen in tourist maps.

Samui Waterfalls

Some good waterfalls in Koh Samui are Namuang Waterfall 1 and 2, and Hin Lad Waterfall. These places are good spots for swimming, but be careful at Namuang Waterfall 2 as it’s high on the mountain. It was closed during my visit. Hin Lad is a great place to hike along the stream in the peaceful jungle.

Phuket has some waterfalls, like Ao Yon Waterfall and Kathu Waterfall, but the beaches and other attractions on the island make these waterfalls less of a priority for visitors.

Island Hopping

Phuket is an excellent base to explore beautiful islands in the Adanaman Sea. You can take trips to world famous destinations like Phi Phi islands and James Bond island.

Phi Phi island
Phi Phi island
Koh Tao

Phi Phi are famous for their stunning beaches and crystal-clear water, while James Bond Island (from The Man with the Golden Gun) is iconic for its unique limestone karsts.

There are many islands you can visit from Phuket by boat such as Similand islands, Koh Yao Yai/ Noi, Koh Lanta, Koh Hong, Koh Lipe, Ao Nang and Railay.

Koh Samui has fewer island-hopping choices than Phuket. You can take boat trips to Koh Tao for snorkeling and diving, Koh Phangan for full moon party, or Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Getting Around

I rented a scooter to explore Phuket and Koh Samui. I found that it’s an affordable way to explore these islands. The scooter rental is around 250 baht a day in both places.

Riding share services such Grab, Bolt, and InDrive are available on all major tourist areas of Phuket and Koh Samui. There are also plenty of local taxis to take you around. Taxis are quite expensive in both islands. They’re likely the two most expensive places for a taxi ride in Thailand.

You can also consider taking guided tours which are popular ways to explore both islands. There are sightseeing tours taking you to famous sights, as well as island hopping tours taking your to nearby islands for snorkeling and diving.

So, you have it, my comparison between Phuket and Koh Samui. Overall, Phuket is a better choice if you want to visit the more developed island, easily accessible and has a wider range of nightlife, shopping, and food. It’s ideal for first-timers to Thailand and those who want to explore the Andaman Sea.

Koh Samui is a better option if you want a more laid-back atmosphere and you want to explore the Gulf of Thailand with boat trips to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
