Phuket or Koh Phangan, which is better?

Phuket and Koh Phangan are two popular islands in South Thailand. Phuket is the most popular island in Thailand located in the Andaman Sea, Koh Phangan is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is known for its Full Moon Party, nature, and wellness retreats.

In this article, I will compare Koh Phangan and Phuket. I will outline the similarities and differences based on their locations, accommodations, attractions, beaches, nightlife, shopping, and food.

I have traveled all around Thailand, visiting many places, including Phuket and Koh Phangan. I hope to give you some good recommendations based on my personal experiences.

Is it better to visit Phuket or Koh Phangan?

Generally speaking, Phuket is a better place than Koh Phangan if you’re first-timers in Thailand who enjoy a lively beach holiday with a wide range of tourist amenities and activities. The island has something for everyone including beaches, culture, nature, food, shopping, nightlife, and many island hopping tours.

Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is a better place to visit if you want to join the Full Moon party, take part in the wellness retreat, or enjoy nature and outdoor activities such as hiking, waterfalls, and viewpoints. Koh Phang has a more laid-back or bohemian vibe than Phuket.

Phuket is more developed than Koh Phangan. It’s an island with an international airport and is connected with the mainland, so you can easily get to Phuket by air, road, and sea. Koh Phangan is a more remote destination and is only accessible by boat.

The locations of Koh Phangan and Phuket are also key factors in choosing the right island for you. Phuket is in the Adanman sea and Phangan is in the Gulf of Thailand.

So, Phuket is a better choice if you want easy access to ionic islands in the Andaman Sea like Koh Phi Phi, James Bond, Similand, Koh Yao, Koh Lanta, or Koh Lipe. Koh Phangan is a better choice for a boat trip for Koh Samui, Koh Tao, or Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park.

If you have enough time, you can visit both Phuket and Koh Phangan. They are both located in South Thailand by using the combination of buses and boats. You can also take a 55 minutes direct flight from Phuket to Koh Samui, then a short boat ride to Koh Phangan.

Location & How to Get There

Both islands are located in South Thailand, but they’re in different seas. Phuket is located in the Andaman Sea close to other islands like Koh Phi Phi, James Bond island, Koh Yao Yai/ Noi, and Koh Lanta. Koh Phangan is located in the Gulf of Thailand, close to Koh Tao and Koh Samui.

Phuket has an international airport, making it easily reachable from both within Thailand and abroad. Additionally, the island is linked with the mainland via a bridge, making it easily accessible by car and bus. And, of course, you can take boats from nearby islands to Phuket.

Koh Phangan doesn’t have an airport, so you can only access the island by boat. This is one of the reasons to keep Phangan a more laid-back atmosphere and less touristy than Phuket. You can fly into the nearby island, Koh Samui, then take a 30-minute boat ride to Phangan.

Beaches

Both islands have a wide range of beaches, including both lively beaches and secluded ones. Phuket has more developed beaches and Koh Phangan has more remote hidden beaches.

At popular beaches on both islands, you can find beach facilities such as umbrellas, beach chairs, and water sports activities. The beaches are all great for swimming, sunbathing, and watching the sunset.

Famous beaches on Phuket are Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala. You can find quieter beaches such as Nai Harn, Mai Khao, Nai Thon, and Bao Bao. There are some secluded ones such as Freedom Beach or Haad Laem Sing Beach, or Nui Beach.

Popular beaches on Phuket are Haad Rin, Sithranu, and Zen Beach. Haad Rin is the location of the famous monthly Full Moon Party. Quieter beaches are on the northwest and north east such as Salad Beach, Mae Haad, Chaloklum Beach, and Thong Nai Pan Beach.

Koh Phangan has several remote beaches that can only be accessible by boat, challenging hiking trails, or 4wheel drivers. Some of those beaches are Bottle Beach, Haad Yuan, or Haad Khom.

Accommodations

Both Phuket and Koh Phangan have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets and preferences. You can easily find luxury 5-star beachfront resorts and budget backpacker hotels.

Both islands are popular destinations in the high season from November to May. So, if you travel during this period, make sure to book well in advance to secure your stay.

I was in Koh Phangan, and wanted to extend my stay during New Year’s Eve, but couldn’t find any available accommodations online. I found a backpacker bunk bed on the booking site with an outrageous price for the night. I was lucky to find a hostel in Koh Samui available, and moved there.

Nightlife

Phuket is the better option if you’re looking for a diverse nightlife experience. You can find wild nightlife in Patong, quieter but still lively nightlife in Karon, Kata, and Kamala. Or you can head to Phuket Old Town for trendy night markets, and beautiful restaurants with authentic food.

Patong is the party’s heart of Phuket. The main party street in Patong, Bangla Road is packed with clubs, bars, street performers, and a wild crowd.

The nightlife in Koh Phangan is chilled in most parts of the island. The famous Full Moon party is located in Haad Rin, on the southern tip, is the place to go for party goers.

On other beaches are more laid-back nightlife scenes with sunset bars, yoga on the beach at sunset, or music performances.

Shopping

Phuket is a better place to go shopping. The island is more developed with modern shopping malls and many night markets. You can easily find cheap souvenirs and luxury international goods.

Major malls in Phuket are the Central Phuket near Phuket Old town and Jungcelon mall in Patong. Local markets are Phuket Weekend Market, Banzaan Fresh Market, and the Old Town Night markets. These places have local handicrafts, clothes, accessories, and antiques.

Koh Phanga does not have big shopping malls, but it has a good range of local shops and stalls at the night markets. Thong Sala is the shopping hub of the island. You can buy bohemian-style clothing, sarongs, beach accessories, handmade soaps, and vegan beauty products.

Food

Both islands have a wide range of local Thai and international dishes. Seafood is widely available on each island. You can find more fine dining options and street food stalls in the night market in Phuket than in Koh Phangan.

Koh Phangan’s food scene has a heavy focus on fresh ingredients and health-conscious options. Many restaurants here cater to the yoga and wellness people, offering vegetarian, vegan, and raw food.

In Phuket, you can find good authentic food in Phuket Old Town. The island also has a wide range of night markets where you can easily access the street food stalls. Some good night markets for food are Chillva, Phuket Old Town Walking Street night market, Banzaan night market, or Kata Market.

In Koh Phanga, you can find authentic local food in the island’s main town, Thong Sala. The island’s two main night markets, Phanga Food Court and Pantip, are located in Thong Sala, offering a wide range of street food. The Saturday Night market near the pier is also a great place for local food.

Cultural attractions

Phuket has more cultural attractions than in Koh Phangan. You can visit big temples and the historic old town, while Koh Phangan has some small local temples.

Old Phuket Town is the heart of Phuket’s colonial past. It’s home to many well-preserved and colorful Sino-Portuguese buildings, as well as many Chinese Temples and museums. The charming streets like Thalang Road have a rich blend of Thai and colonial heritage.

The island is also home to some popular temples such as the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong. The Big Buddha is located high on the hill and can see from many places around the island. Wat Chalong has beautiful architecture. Both are peaceful places to visit.

Koh Phangan has some small temples catering around the island. You can check out Wat Phu Khao Noi, Kuan Yin Temple (Chinese Temple), or Chaloklum temple.

Viewpoints and Hiking

Both islands have beautiful viewpoints and hiking trails. In my opinion, if you are hiker enthusiastic, Koh Phangan is the better hiking destination. The island has some challenging trails, and you’re rewarded with stunning views from the top.

Most viewpoints in Koh Phangan require a hike to the top, while in Phuket you can drive to the top of or take a short hike to the viewpoints.

Some of my favorite viewpoints in Koh Phangan are Bottle Beach Viewpoint, 420 Club, Haad Yuan Viewpoint, Khao Ra Viewpoint, and Dom Sila Viewpoint. To reach these viewpoints, you need to take the hike though easy and challenging trails. 420 Club can be reached by scooter via a steep winding road.

Popular viewpoints in Phuket are Karon viewpoint, Windmill Viewpoint, Promthep Viewpoint, and Monkey Hill Viewpoint. Most viewpoints are easily reachable by scooter while reaching Monkey hill viewpoint involves hiking a challenging trail.

Waterfalls

Than Sadet waterfalls Phangan

Both islands feature stunning waterfalls, which are especially impressive during the rainy season when the falls are at their fullest. They can dry up or become less impressive in the dry season from November to April.

Koh Phangan is known for its beautiful nature, and the waterfalls are parts of the natural attractions of the island. Some of the beautiful waterfalls are Than Sadet Waterfall, Phaeng Noi Waterfall, or Khao Ra Waterfall.

Phuket is a more developed island with a variety of things to do, and most people enjoy its beaches, island hopping, and cultural attractions. Waterfalls are not the big things on the island for tourists, but the island does have some nice falls such as Ton Sai Waterfall and Kathu Waterfall.

Island Hopping

Koh Phi Phi day trip from Phuket
Koh Phi Phi day trip from Phuket

Phuket is an excellent base to explore the Andaman Sea. The most famous islands of Thailand are located in this sea. They are Koh Phi Phi, James Bond island, Koh Lanta, Koh Hong, Ao Nang/ Railay, or Koh Lipe. If you want to take many island tours, Phuket has better options.

From Koh Phangan, you can take boat trips to nearby islands in the Gulf of Thailand. The most popular islands nearby are Koh Tao and Koh Samui.

Getting Around & Size

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, around 50km long and 17km wide. Koh Phangan is also one of the big islands in the country, around 14km long and 10km wide.

I rented a scooter to explore each island. Both islands feature mountainous terrain, which means there are many winding, steep roads. Make sure to exercise caution if you drive a scooter, as the roads can be challenging. I saw a bike accident in Koh Phangan.

Phuket is a more developed island, so riding share services are widely available. You can easily get Grab, Bolt, or InDrive. Koh Phangan doesn’t have these services, just local taxis and songthaews. Taxi prices are quite expensive on both islands.

You can take guided tours or hire private drivers to explore these islands. Phuket is a more popular destination, so you can find many tours such as sightseeing tours, or island hopping tours. I didn’t see many tour advertisements in Phang Nga, but I believe they are available.

So, here is my comparison between Phuket and Koh Phanga. In conclusion, Phuket is a better choice for first-timers and those who want an easily accessible, good mix of everything, a wider range of shops and nightlife, and lots of island hopping tours to the Andaman Sea.

Koh Phangan is better than Phuket who want a more laid-back atmosphere, beautiful nature, lots of hiking trails, and yoga retreats. The island is famous for its Full Moon event, held at the southern tip. It is a popular island for backpackers, party goers, and wellness seekers.
