Phuket and Koh Lipe are two beautiful islands in the Andanman Sea, South Thailand. Phuket is the biggest and most popular island of Thailand, offering lively nightlife, shopping, and activities. Koh Lipe is a tiny island, with a laid back atmosphere and a required long boat journey to reach.
In this article, I will compare Phuket and Koh Lipe. I will analyse the similarities and differences of some aspects such as locations, accommodations, beaches, attractions, nightlife, shopping, and food. I traveled to both islands, so I can give you recommendations based on my first-hand experiences.
Is it better to visit Phuket or Koh Lipe?
I had a great time exploring both Phuket and Koh Lipe. Phuket has a more lively atmosphere with lots of things to do and see including natural, cultural attractions, food, and island hopping tours. Koh Lipe has a more laid-back atmosphere with good nightlife and stunning beaches.

Generally speaking, Phuket is a better option for first-timers to Thailand. The island is easily accessible and offers everything in one place. You can enjoy classic Thai tropical islands without traveling too far.
Koh Lipe is often referred to as the Maldives of Thailand, which is a better place for those who prioritize crystal clear, white sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere. It’s also a great place to visit if you are at nearby Langkawi island of Malaysia.
I visited both Phuket and Koh Lipe in one trip. I visited Ko Lipe from Krabi town, then from Koh Lipe, I headed to Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao Yai, then finally Phuket.
My hand-picked hotels in Phuket:
- Luxury: Phuket Graceland Resort
- Mid-range: Quality Beach Resort
- Budget: Seven Seas Hotel
My recommended hotels in Koh Lipe:
- Luxury: Bulow Casa Grand View Resort
- Mid-range: Mali Resort Sunrise Beach
- Budget: Mali Resort Pattaya Beach
Location & How to Get There

Both islands are located on the Andanman Sea, South Thailand. Koh Lipe is around 180 km south east of Phuket. The boat ride between the two islands is around 5 hours.
Phuket is easier to access because you can get to Phuket by air, by car, and by boat. It’s just a short drive from other popular destinations in mainland South Thailand like Krabi, Khao Lak, and Khao Sok national park.
Koh Lipe is located in a more remote location, the southern tip of Thailand. It can only be accessed by boats. There are direct boats to Koh Lipe from Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Ao Nang/ Relay, and mainland Satun. You can get to Ko Lipe from Langkawi, the island of Malaysia.
Beaches
Both islands have a wide range of beaches to explore. I personally prefer the beaches in Koh Lipe more, because most of the main beaches have crystal clear water, white fine sand, and beautiful scenery.

Major beaches on Koh Lipe are Pattaya Beach, Sun rise, and Sunset beach. There are hidden beaches around the island if you’re looking for some alone time.
The beaches on Koh Lipe are great for swimming, sunbathing, watching the sunset, and snorkeling in some parts. North Point Beach is a popular spot to watch sunset. It’s centrally located at the intersection of Sunset and Sunrise beach, within a short distance from the walking street.
Phuket has dozens of beaches on the west coast, and some beaches on the south eastern coast of the island. Main Beaches are Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Nai Harn, Bang Tao, and Mai Khao. There are some secluded beaches such as Freedom Beach, Banana Beach, and Nui Bay.
There are more beach facilities on the beaches on Phuket such as umbrellas, sunbeds, and watersports such as jet skiing and banana boats. The popular watersport in Ko Lipe is snorkeling, kayaking, paddle padding, and diving.
Accommodations

Both islands have a wide range of accommodations for all preferences. There are more luxury options in Phuket, and the accommodations in Koh Lipe generally provide basic amenities because it’s in a quiet remote area of Thailand.
Many hotels on Ko Lipe offer fan not air conditioning rooms. The roads in some areas are dirt trails, which are tough to walk on while carrying luggage.
Koh Lipe also has many more beachfront resorts located just a step away from the sand, while most resorts on Phuket are located on the main roads, requiring a bit of a walk to the beach.
Both islands are popular destinations in the high season, so make sure to book your hotel in advance to secure your spot.

Nightlife
Phuket is one of the best places to visit in Thailand for nightlife. The island has a variety of nightlife scenes. Whether you want a wild party of quiet nightlife, Phuket has it all.

The center of the nightlife in Phuket is Bangla Road and Patong. This street is packed with crowds in the evening. It is lined with neon lights, bars, clubs, go-go bars, and nightclubs.
For a quieter, more family-friendly but still lively atmosphere, you can go to Karon, Kata, or Kamala Beach. If you want to search for good local food for dinner, you must check out trendy restaurants and cafes in Phuket Old Town.
The nightlife in Koh Lipe is more laid back than Phuket, with no loud music like in Patong. Bars and restaurants are centered around the Walking Street.
Popular beaches such as Pattaya, Sunrise, North Point, and Sunset Beach also have beach bars, attracting many people around sunset time. The beachfront areas of Pattaya Beach are also lively at night, with restaurants and chairs set out on the sand for romantic meals and drinks.
Shopping
Phuket, is without a doubt, the best location to go shopping. It has a broader selection of shopping malls and night markets, where you can shop for both luxury goods and cheap souvenirs.

Koh Lipe has no big shopping malls and night markets, but it has a good selection of local small family-run shops where you can buy beach wear and typical Thai gifts. Most shops are located on Koh Lipe Walking Street, which is the area between Pattaya and Sunrise Beach.
In Phuket, there are two famous malls including the Central Phuket near the old town, and Jungcelon Mall in Patong. There are also plenty of night markets such as Chillva, Naka Weekend Market, Sunday Walking Street, or Banzaan Night Market. These are great places to shop for bargain souvenirs.
Food
Both islands offer a wide range of local Thai food and seafood. You can find typical dishes such as Thai fried rice, pad Thai, noodle soup, mango sticky rice….

Phuket is the bigger and more developed island, so it has more choices of restaurants, and cafes. It’s easier to find local Thai food, international dishes, vegan and vegetarian dishes. There are also more dining options and lots of street food stalls at the night markets.
The restaurants in Koh Lipe are concentrated along the main street of the island. It’s usually packed with people in the evening finding a place to eat.
In Phuket, if you want authentic and cheap food, make sure to find your way to the old town. Here, you can find delicious noodle soups, Chinese dishes, in local trendy restaurants and at the Sunday Walking Night market or Indy Night Market.
Cultural attractions

Koh Lipe is all about the beaches and nature; there are no significant cultural attractions on the island. Phuket, on the other hand, is packed with cultural and historical attractions.
Phuket historic old town itself is home to dozens of colorful old houses with Sino-Portuguese architecture, old shophouses, temples, museums, and street art. The town has a mix of Thai, Chinese, and European influences, which has shaped the history and culture of Phuket.
Additionally, the island is home to two big Buddhist temples. The Big Buddha is located on the highest points of Phuket, offering stunning views of the beaches and mountains. The Wat Chalong has a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture style.
Viewpoints and Hiking

Phuket has more mountainous terrain, so it has some stunning viewpoints and hiking trails. Koh Lipe is much more flat, you can walk around the island, and there are some jungle trails at the western end of Ko Lipe, taking you to secret beaches.
Some of the popular viewpoints in Phuket include Karon Viewpoint, Promthep, Windmill, or Black Rock Viewpoint. These trails are easily accessible by cars and scooters.
There are some good hiking trails around the island including the trail to Monkey Hill Viewpoints near the old town, the trail from Karon/ Kata to the Big Budda, or the coastal trail from Nai harn Beach to Black Rock Viewpoint.
In Koh Lipe, you can take a 10 minute long tail boat ride to Koh Adang for hiking. There is the trail to Koh Lipe Viewpoint and the trail to the Pirate Waterfalls.
Island Hopping
Phuket has a more central location in the Andaman Sea, making it a better location for boat trips to famous islands in South Thailand. Koh Lipe is located at the southern tip of the country, but there are some small islands nearby you can visit.

Popular island hopping tours from Phuket are Koh Phi Phi, James Bond island, Koh Lanta, Railay/ Ao Nang, and Koh Yao Yai/ Noi. These islands have beautiful beaches and natural landscapes. Places like Phi Phi and James Bond islands have picture-postcard beaches with stunning limestone cliffs.
From Koh Lipe, you can take boat trips to Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, or Ko Tarutao. These places are great secluded beaches, some hiking trails, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. There are also many snorkeling and diving tours from Koh Lipe.
Getting Around and Size
Phuket is the biggest island of Thailand, around 50km long and 18km wide. Koh Lipe is a tiny island, approximately 3 km wide and 2 km long at its longest point.
To travel around Phuket island, you need to rent a scooter or use taxi services. The island has many taxi choices including local taxi, songthaews, and riding share services such as Grab, Bolt, and InDrive.
I personally rent a scooter to explore Phuket. I think it’s the best way to explore the island as the rental is cheap and you can see everything at your own pace. Phuket has many winding and steep roads, so make sure to be cautious if you drive a scooter.
Koh Lipe is easily explored on food. I explore most beaches on the island by walking, and ideally using motorbike taxis. The motorbike taxi drivers take you to any destination on the island with a flat price, 50 baht. You can use this service when you feel tired of walking.

So, you have it, my comparison between Koh Lipe and Phuket. In conclusion, Phuket is a better location for first-timers to Thailand and those who want an easily accessible, wide range of attractions, amenities, and good nightlife, and shopping. It’s also an excellent base for island hopping in the Andaman Sea.
Koh Lipe is a better place to visit if you prefer small, isolated and less developed islands. It has more pristine beaches and a laid back atmosphere. It’s less accessible than Phuket, but that’s part of its charm.
