Stay on Phuket or Koh Lanta?

Phuket and Koh Lanta are two good beach holiday destinations in South Thailand. These islands are located both on the Andaman Sea but have a different atmosphere. Phuket is a more developed island with a vibrant nightlife scene, and Lanta offers a more relaxing and authentic local experience.

In this article, I will compare Koh Lanta and Phuket, focusing on their location, accommodations, beaches, nightlife, shopping, food, and attractions. I’ve visited both islands, so I hope to offer some helpful advice based on my firsthand experience.

Is it better to stay in Koh Lanta or Phuket?

I had a great time in both Phuket and Koh Lanta. Each island had its own character, and I feel fortunate to have visited them both.

Both islands are located on the Andaman Sea, only around 2 hours speed boat ride apart. They have a good range of beaches for swimming, sunbathing, relaxing, and watching the sunset. Phuket has a more central location for island-hopping adventurers to Phi Phi, Similan Islands, and Phang Nga Bay.

Koh Lanta

Phuket is a more popular island, so it has lots of tourist infrastructure like shopping malls, restaurants, shops, cafes, and bars. It has an international airport and is connected with the mainland by road, making it easier to access by air, road, and sea.

Koh Lanta is a less touristy and less developed island with quiet beaches and a local vibe. It is only accessible by boat, making it perfect for a quiet getaway.

Generally speaking, Phuket is the best island for first-time visitors to Thailand and all travelers who want convenience, variety, and activity-packed days. It is also ideal for party goers, luxury travelers, shoppers, and food lovers.

Koh Lanta is the best choice for families, couples, and solo travelers who want a peaceful environment, laid-back nightlife, fewer tourists, and a slower pace. This island has a more local authentic atmosphere than Phuket.

Many visitors visit both islands in the single trip. If your time allows, you can consider visiting both islands to experience everything they have to offer.

My recommended places to stay in Koh Lanta:

Location & How to Get There

Phuket and Koh Lanta are both located in the Andaman Sea on the western side of Thailand. Koh Lanta is around 80km south east of Phuket. It is around 2 hours away on the direct speed boat.

Phuket is connected to mainland Thailand by Sarasin Bridge. It is close to popular places like Khao Lak, Phang Nga Bay, Koh Yao islands, and Koh Phi Phi.

Koh Lanta is part of Krabi Province and is close to Koh Phi Phi and Koh Pu. It is easily accessible from mainland Thailand with a just 10-15 minutes ferry ride from Hua Hin Pier.

Phuket can be accessed by air, by road, and by boat, making it more popular. Koh Lanta is only accessible by boat, making it more secluded and peaceful.

Size & Landscape

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and is significantly bigger than Koh Lanta. Phuket is around 50km long and 15km wide. Koh Lanta is around 24km long and 6km wide.

Phuket is hilly and mountainous in the interior and flat coastal plains near beaches. The island has long sandy beaches with clear waters. There are some rocky cliffs, bays and coves along the coast. It has a good range of jungle attractions like dramatic viewpoints and waterfalls.

Koh Lanta is less mountainous than Phuket. It has gently rolling hills, wide, sandy, and quieter beaches than Phuket. The coastline is mostly sandy beaches with some rocky areas on the southern tip.

Phuket and Koh Lanta have something in common: all the popular beaches on both islands are located on the west coast. The east coast is home to the historic old town where you can find historic temples, old shop houses, and cultural attractions.

With larger size, Phuket has a wider range of both beach and jungle attractions and activities. This island also has more steep, winding roads than Koh Lanta, so make sure to be careful if you’re driving a scooter.

Beaches

Both islands have a good range of beaches to enjoy water activities like swimming and sunbathing. In my opinion, Phuket has better beaches with white sand and clean water. The beaches on Phuket are often more crowded than in Koh Lanta.

Patong Beach
Patong Beach
Kantiang Bay Lanta
Kantiang Bay Lanta

Popular beaches on Phuket include Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Nai Harn, and Mai Khao Beach. The beaches are quieter in the far north and far south of the island.

Similar to Phuket, Koh Lanta has many long beaches and small hidden coves. Most beaches are located on the west coast, and the beaches are more beautiful and quieter further south. Famous beaches on Lanta are Long Beach, Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay, or Nui Bay.

The beaches on Phuket are more well-equipped with facilities like sunbeds, umbrellas, and watersport equipment for rent. Some beaches like Kata, Surin, or Nai Harn, also have their own beachfront market along the beach road where you can find good street food and drink to bring to the beach.

In general, beaches on Lanta are best known for their relaxing atmosphere. Beaches in Phuket have good quality but are usually busier. Phuket is a large island, and if you are still able to find some secluded beaches on the northern part.

Accommodations

Accommodations on Phuket

Both islands have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. Phuket is a more popular and developed island, so it has more luxury options. If you’re after a luxurious stay, Phuket has better choices.

Like many other parts of Thailand, accommodations are often in high demand during the peak season from November to May. If you’re traveling to either Phuket or Koh Lanta in the high season, make sure to book in advance to secure your spot.

Shopping

Phuket has a better shopping scene with many modern shopping malls, night markets, and independent shops. You can find almost everything on Phuket, including both luxury products or cheap local Thai souvenirs.

Lanta Night Market
Lanta Night Market

The main shopping hubs on Phuket are at the main towns like Patong and Phuket Old Town. Here you can find big malls like Central Phuket or Jungcelon. Big night markets on the island are Chillva Market, Phuket Sunday Walking Street Market, Banzaan Market, or OTOP Market.

Koh Latan doesn’t have big shopping malls like in Phuket. It has 7-Eleven convenient stores in popular towns like Sala Dan, Long Beach, or Kantiang Bay.

The main shopping hub of Lanta island is at Sala Dan village, where you can find a night market and a plaza. These places usually sell budget-friendly Thai souvenirs, clothes, and street food.

Nightlife

Phuket is the best place to go for nightlife. Patong is the main nightlife hub of the island with dozens of bars, night clubs, night markets, and restaurants. This area is home to Bangla Walking Street, which is the red light area of Patong.

Other beach towns like Kata and Karon also have good nightlife scenes but less wild than Patong. Phuket Old Town on the east coast also has great nightlife with great restaurants, and night markets. The nightlife in the old town is more about the food and shopping than the bar scene in Patong.

Koh Lanta has a laid-back nightlife scene. There are some good restaurants and beach bars in each town where you can have a night chill with a drink around sunset time. Places like Long Beach, Klong Khong, and Klong Nin have some good bars to enjoy.

Food

As a more popular touristy island, Phuket has a wider range of food. It has vibrant markets, street food, and international cuisine. You can find both fine dining and cheap food options all around the island. For more authentic experience, you can head to the Old town, which offers more authentic and local food.

Koh Lanta has less food choice than in Phuket. The food here is mainly Thai food. The island has a large Muslim population of Muslim, so there are more options for Halal Food.

Both islands have good seafood dishes. You can try popular dishes like grilled fish, squid, prawns, and crab. The restaurants in Phuket are usually more crowded than in Koh Lanta.

Hiking

There are more hiking trails in Phuket due to its large size and mountainous terrain. There hiking trails near Phuket Old Town, at the southern part of the island, or near Patong.

Hiking at Mu Ko Lanta National Park

Monkey Hill Viewpoint Phuket

Some of my favorite hike on Phuket are Black Rock Viewpoint, Cape Krathing – Nai Harn beach, and Monkey Hill Viewpoint. You can hike from Kata/ Karon to the Big Buddha, or the trail from Patong to Kamala passing Kalim Viewpoint and Bang Wan Waterfall.

Koh Lanta also has a couple of nice hiking trails at the southern part of the island. You can hike to Khlong Chak Waterfall and take the natural trail to the light house at the Mu Ko Lanta national park. The hike to the waterfall is easy but the hike to the light house is quite challenging in some parts.

Historic Old Town

Both Phuket and Koh Lanta have a historic old town located on the east coast of each island. These places are great to learn about the history of each area, experience local life, and try authentic food.

Old Town Phuket

Lanta Old Town
Lanta Old Town

Phuket Old Town is bigger and more lively than Lanta Old Town. It is home to many colorful Sino-Portuguese old houses with a blend architecture of European and Chinese influences.

Main roads in Phuket Old Town are Thalang Road, Dibuk Road, Krabi Road packed with colonial-era shop houses, cafes, and boutiques. There are also many temples, shrines, traditional markets, and museums to explore. Street art is also prominent, with murals decorating walls throughout the town.

Lanta Old Town is a small one street area that is lined with traditional wooden stilt houses overlooking the water. These old houses have a mix architecture of Malay, Chinese, and Thai influences. This town is very relaxed, quiet, and slow-paced compared to Phuket Old Town.

Attractions

In addition to the beaches, jungle attractions, and the old town, Phuket and Lanta have some other attractions to explore like waterfalls, viewpoints, and elephant sanctuaries.

Big Buddha Phuket
Big Buddha Phuket

With more mountainous terrain, there are more viewpoints in Phuket. Some famous ones are Karon Viewpoints, Black Rock Viewpoint, Big Buddha Viewpoint, Promthep Cape, Windmill Viewpoint, and Kaokard Viewpoint Tower….

In Koh Lanta, you can rent a scooter to explore the lesser-known island, Koh Lanta Noi. This is a smaller island north of Lanta Main island. These two islands are connected by a bridge, so you can visit Lanta Noi by scooter, visiting local fishing villages, viewpoints, remote beaches, and historical houses.

Island Hopping

Phi Phi Island
Phi Phi Island

There are good boat trips from both Phuket and Koh Latan. Phuket is a bit closer to popular islands, making it more convenient to do island hopping tours from Phuket.

From Phuket, there are boat trips to James Bond island, Koh Yao Yai/ Noi, Phi Phi island, Hong islands, Surin Islands, Coral island, or Khai Island.

From Koh Lanta, you can take snorkeling trips to Koh Rok and Koh Haa. You can also take your island tours to Koh Mook, Emerald Cave, Koh Ngai, and Koh Ma.

Getting Around

My scooter on Lanta
My scooter on Lanta

Both islands have local taxis, tuk, and songthaews to help you to get around. These services are quite expensive in both Phuket and Koh Lanta. Make sure to agree on the price with the driver before getting off.

As a more developed island, Phuket has riding share services like Grab (taxi + motorbike taxi), InDrive, and Bolt. Koh Lanta doesn’t have these riding services. You can rent a scooter, a car, and hire a private driver to get around each island.

So, there you have it, my comparison between Koh Lanta and Phuket. Generally speaking, Phuket is the best choice if you enjoy a wide variety of attractions and tourist amenities, and a lively nightlife scene. Koh Lanta is a better choice if you’re after a relaxing beach holiday with a more local atmosphere.
