Phuket is a popular island in South Thailand. Khao Lak is a quieter coastal town located just 1 hour drive north of Phuket. They are both good beach holiday destinations in Thailand.
In this article, I will compare Phuket and Khao Lak, focusing on their locations, beaches, accommodations, nightlife, shopping, foods, and cultural attractions.
I traveled to both Phuket and Khao lak, and many other parts of Thailand. So, I hope to give you some good information based on my personal experiences.
Is it better to visit Phuket or Khao Lak?
I had a good time visiting both Phuket and Khao Lak. Phuket has a more lively atmosphere with a wider range of tourist amenities, and island hopping tours. Khao Lak has much quieter beaches and some good natural attractions to explore.

Generally speaking, Phuket is better than Khao Lak if you’re first-timers to Thailand who want to explore classic island experiences with lots of island hopping tours, and easy access to a wide range of tourist amenities. The island has a good mix of beach activities, nature, nightlife, shopping, and food.
Khao Lak is a good option if you want to stay in a relaxed beach town away from the tourist crowds. It’s an excellent alternative for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Phuket and Krabi. It’s also a great base to explore Khao Sok national park and Similan islands.
Phuket is more popular than Khao Lak, offering better shopping, vibrant nightlife, and easy access by air. To reach Khao Lak by air, you’ll first need to fly into a nearby airport, such as Phuket Airport, and then take additional road transport to Khao Lak.
The two places are located only 2 hours drive away, so if your time allows, you can stay in both Phuket and Khao Lak. They are parts of my journey when exploring South Thailand, from Khao Sok national park, to Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Lipe, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao Yai, and Phuket.

Beaches
Both places have beautiful beaches for swimming, sunbathing, and watching the sunset. There are more beach facilities and watersport activities on the beaches in Phuket and than in Khao Lak.

Phuket’s beaches are often packed with umbrellas, sunbeds, beachfront bars and restaurants. There are a wide range of watersports such as jet skiing, banana boats, or kayaking.
Phuket also offers a wide range of beaches, each with its own unique atmosphere. Major beaches with a lively atmosphere are Patong, Karon, Kata, and Kamala. Quieter beaches are Nai Harn, Bang Tao, Nai Thon, and Mai Khao Beach. There are also some slides beaches like Freedom or Haad Laem Sing Beach.
Khao Lak offers long, uncrowded beaches perfect for relaxation. If you want to sunbathe on the beach, you’ll likely need to bring your own towel, as there aren’t many sunbeds or umbrellas available for rent on most beaches.
Som popular beaches in Khao Lak are Nang Thong, Nang Biang, Khuk Khak, White Sand, Coconut Beach, and Bang Sak Beach.

Both Phuket and Khao Lak have a wide range of accommodation for all budgets. You can easily find luxury beachfront resorts and budget hotels. In Phuket, you can find some nice boutique hotels in the old town.

Nightlife
Phuket has a vibrant nightlife scene, and if you’re looking for a party, it’s the place to be. The nightlife in Khao Lak is more chill and relaxing, but it has a good selection of bars and restaurants to explore, especially in the main areas such as Nang Thong and Bang Niang.

Patong Beach, particularly Bangla Road, is the epicenter of Phuket’s nightlife. This street comes alive after dark with go-go bars, street performers, and nightclubs. The atmosphere is often wild, vibrant, and packed with tourists from around the world.
If you want a bit quieter nightlife but still have a good range of bars, restaurants, you can visit Karon, Kata, or Kamala. For browsing good local restaurants and shops, you can check out Phuket Old Town.
The bars and restaurants in Khao Lak are centered around Nang Thong and Nang Biang Beach. You can enjoy a quiet beach bar, a romantic dinner, or a chill night out in this town.
Shopping
Phuket is undoubtedly the better place for shopping. The island has wide selections of shopping malls, independent shops, and night markets to explore. Khao Lak has no big malls and several local markets, and shops in the main beach areas.

Jungceylon Mall (Patong) and Central Phuket are some of the largest malls on the island, offering everything from international clothing brands to electronics, beauty products, and a wide range of restaurants and cinemas.
Phuket Old Town is also a great spot to shop for trendy souvenirs. It has couples of night markets, and stylish boutiques selling handmade jewelry, Thai textiles, antiques, and Chinese-style goods.
Shopping in Khao Lak is far more low-key and authentic compared to Phuket. Places like Bang Niang Market offer a mix of local items and handicrafts, while smaller boutiques around the town focus on handmade jewelry and local art.
Food

You can find both local Thai food and international dishes in Phuket and Khao Lak. As a more popular destination, Phuket has a wider range of restaurants, night markets, and street food stalls. Seafood restaurants are widely available in both places.
In Phuket, I like to browse local restaurants in the old town for authentic and cheap Thai food. The Chilla Night Market is also my favorite spot for street foods. There are also plenty of other markets around the island for street food such as Kata night market, or Banzaan Night Market in Patong.
In Khao Lak, there are some nice restaurants on the main road in Nang thong and Bang Niang. The Nang Biang night market is also a great spot to try street food in Khao Lak.
Cultural attractions

Phuket has more prominent cultural and historical attractions than Khao Lak. Major cultural attractions in Phuket are the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, and a wide range of temples, museums, and old houses in Phuket Old town.
Old Town Phuket, located on the island’s east coast, is a charming reminder of Phuket’s history. You’ll find Sino-Portuguese architecture, colorful colonial buildings, street art, local markets, and small museums that showcase the multicultural past of the island.
In Khao Lak, you can find a small buddhist temple near Khuk Khak beach. Or if you venture a bit further away, you can visit the old town of Takua Pa and Boon Soong Iron Bridge. There are colorful old houses, street art, and cool weekend night markets in Takua Pa old to explore.
Viewpoints and Hiking

Phuket has mountainous terrain, so it has more viewpoints and hiking opportunities. But Khao Lak also has some good hiking trails to explore.
Some of my favorite viewpoints in Phuket are Karon Viewpoint, Black Rock viewpoint, and Promthep Viewpoint. I also took the challenging trail to Monkey Hill viewpoint near Phuket Old Town. You can also check the trail to the Big Buddha starting from Karon and Kata.
In Khao Lak, I enjoyed taking a short natural trail to the sandy beach inside Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. There is also a nice jungle trail within this park to the five level Ton Chong Fa Waterfall.
Island Hopping
Phuket is a better place to stay if you want many island hopping tours to the Andaman Sea. Popular day trip boat tours from Phuket are to Phi Phi islands and James Bond island.
Additionally, Phuket also has direct boat connections to other islands such as Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Yai, Ao Nang/ Railay, and Koh Lipe.
From Khao Lak, it’s easier to take a boat trip to Similand islands, located just 60 km from Khao Lak. Simialand islands are popular spots for diving and snorkeling with crystal clear water and diverse nightlife.
Getting Around
Phuket is more popular than Khao Lak, so you have a wider range of local taxis, and riding share services such as Grab, Bolt, or InDrive. In Khao Lak, only local taxis and tuk tuk are available, not the riding share services.
I rented a scooter in Phuket and Khao Lak. It’s the cheap way to explore these places at my own pace. Just note that Phuket has more mountainous terrain with winding, steep roads, so exercise caution when traveling. Khao Lak is much flatter, and easier to get around by a scooter.
Then there are plenty of guided tours to take you to nearby attractions and islands. From Khao Lak, there are tours to Khao Sok National park and Similand islands. In Phuket, there are dozens of tours taking you to Koh Phi Phi or James Bond island.
