Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are popular islands in South Thailand. These islands are located on western Gulf of Thailand and are known for their beautiful beaches, lush jungles, and vibrant atmosphere.

In this article, I will compare the group of three islands, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. I will outline the differences and similarities of these islands based on their locations, accommodations, beaches, shopping, nightlife, food, jungle activities, and cultural attractions.

I have traveled all around Thailand and stayed on these three islands. I rented a scooter on each island to explore most of what they have to offer. So, I hope to help you with some useful information based on my first hand experience.

Which island is better, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao?

I enjoyed my stay on three islands equally. Even though they share some things in common, like dozens of beaches, jungle activities, and vibrant nightlife, each island offers a different experience, and I’m happy exploring them all.

Koh Samui is the most developed island, so it offers the widest range of tourist infrastructure like modern shopping malls, restaurants, bars, and an airport. It is also the easiest accessible island with an international airport with direct flight from Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Ko Phangan

Koh Tao is the smallest island in the group. It is best known as one of the best and cheapest scuba diving and snorkeling destinations in the world. Koh Tao, along with Koh Phangan, is only accessible by boats. There is no airport on these islands.

Koh Phangan is larger than Koh Tao and smaller than Koh Samui. It is most famous for the Full Moon Party held each month at Haad Rin on the southern tip of the island. Additionally, Phangan is also known for being home to many yoga and wellness retreats, where you can relax and unwind.

Generally speaking, Koh Samui is the best island for families, couples, first-timers, luxury travelers who want convenience and comfort. It has the widest range of tourist amenities, and easy access to airplanes.

Koh Tao is the best overall island for diving enthusiasts. Koh Phangan is the best island for digital nomads, backpackers, yoga lovers, who enjoy the mix of party energy and tranquil nature.

All of these three islands have many beautiful beaches, viewpoints, and hiking trails. There are some nice waterfalls in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Since they are all in the same geographical region, island hopping to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park is easy from any of them.

Many people visit these three islands within one single trip. If you have enough time, consider staying a few nights on each island to fully experience what they have to offer. Koh Phangan is just around 1-2 boat rides south of Koh Tao, and Koh Samui is around 0.5-1 hour boat ride south of Koh Phangan.

Location & How to Get There

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are located on the eastern Gulf of Thailand in South Thailand. They are located near the mainland areas of Surat Thani and Chumphon.

Koh Phangan is around 35 km south east of Koh Tao and Koh Samui is around 10km south of Koh Phangan. There are direct boat connections between these islands.

Koh Samui has an international airport located on the island’s north east, close to Chaweng and Bophut. There is no airport on Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

Koh Samui can be reachable by air and by boat, while other islands are only reachable by boat. If you travel by road from central and northern Thailand like (Chiang Mai, Bangkok, or Hua Hin), you can stop at Chumphon (Lomprayah Pier) to get to these islands.

If you’re coming from cities or islands in southern Thailand, you can reach Donsak Pier in Surat Thani and catch a boat to these islands.

The main pier in Koh Tao is Mae Haad Pier on the island’s west coast near Sairee Beach. The main pier on Koh Phangan is Thongsala Pier. Koh Samui is the largest island with several piers including Nai Thon Pier, Pralarn Pier, Bang Rak Pier, and Lipa Noi Pier.

Size & Landscape

All of these islands have mountainous terrain with lots of steep roads, hiking trails, waterfalls, and viewpoints. There are plenty of beautiful beaches along the coast of each island for you to enjoy beach activities like swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.

Beaches

All islands offer a wide range of both busy and quiet beaches for exploring. The beaches on Koh Tao are generally small with crystal-clear water, rocky shores, and excellent snorkeling. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao have some longer sandy beaches with both party feel and secluded ones.

The main beach on Koh Phangan is Haad Rin on the southern tip of the island. This beach is the location of the iconic monthly Full Moon Party. For a quieter atmosphere, you can check out beaches on the northern part like Zen Beach, Srithanu, Mae Haad, Thong Nai Pan, and Chaloklum Beach.

If you want a remote beach atmosphere away from it all, you can check out Bottle Beach on the northern coast of Phangan. This beach is only accessible by boat, local songthaews, and a long hike down from the Bottle Beach Viewpoint area.

The most popular beaches on Koh Samui are Chaweng, Bophut, and Lamai. Chaweng is the tourist hub of the island, while Lamai and Bophut have a quieter atmosphere. Other relaxing beaches are Choeng Mon, Mae Nam, Lipa Noi, or Ao Taling Ngam.

The beaches on all of these islands usually have white sand, clean water, which are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, chilling, and watching the sunset.

Accommodations

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets and preferences. As the most developed islands, Samui has more luxury beachfront resorts, so if you’re after something luxurious, Samui is a place to go.

These islands are very popular in Thailand, so make sure to book in advance to secure your spot. The price often skyrockets in the high season, and you might be left with no place to stay if you book at the last minute during this peak tourist period from November to May.

Shopping

Koh Samui is the best island for shopping among the three. This island is home to a modern shopping mall called Central Samui located in Chaweng, the island’s main town. You can find both local Thai and international goods in this mall.

Additionally, Samui is home to many night‑markets and independent stores in popular towns like Chaweng, Lamai, and  Bophut Fisherman’s Village. You’ll find everything from souvenirs, beachwear, handmade jewellery, local crafts to more mainstream boutiques and brand‑shops.

Koh Tao and Koh Phangan don’t have a big chain mall like Koh Samui but they offer a good range of shops where you can buy typical Thai souvenirs.

Phangan is home to several local markets (Saturday Walking Street Market and Pantip Market) as well as many nice independent boutiques selling bohemian style clothing and jewellery. Most shops are centered around the main town, Thong Sala.

Koh Tao has a smaller-scale shopping scene compared to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. It has boutique shops, souvenir stalls, dive‑gear stores as diving is big there. There are no significant night markets on the island.

Nightlife

Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, and Ko Tao have lively nightlife scenes, especially in the popular beach towns of each island. Chaweng is the nightlife hub of Samui, Haad Rin is the nightlife hub of Koh Phangan, and Sairee is the nightlife hub of Ko Tao.

In these nightlife hubs of each island, you can explore a good range of bars, and nightclubs on the beach road. The beachfront is also lined with restaurants and bars with tables, chairs, bean bags set on the sand from sunset. Koh Tao generally has a more relaxed vibe overall.

In bigger islands like Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, you can find other beaches that have vibrant nightlife but are quieter than its main hub. On Phangan, you can check out the lively Zen Beach and Srithanu Beach. On Samui, you can have a look at Lamai and Bophut Beach.

Food

As the most tourist-oriented island, Koh Samui has a wider selection of dishes including both Thai and international food. The restaurants on this island are also generally more upscale than in Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

Koh Phangan has more wellness and retreat centers so it has a wider selection of healthy restaurants and eateries serving vegetarian and vegan foods.

Koh Tao has more local Thai food than international dishes. Food is usually served at local restaurants and resorts. Unlike Ko Tao, there are large markets in Samui and Phangan, where you can try various local street foods.

The night markets in Phangan are centered in the main town. You can find several night markets in Thong Sala like Saturday Walking Street, Phangan Food Court, and Pantip Night Market.

On Samui, the main town itself has three night markets including Chaweng Night Market, Central Samui Night Market, and Si Khao Night Market. There are also night markets in other popular towns like Lamai Night market and Bophut Fisherman Night Market.

Waterfalls

Ko Tao doesn’t have a significant waterfall to explore. Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are home to some beautiful waterfalls where you can swim in the middle of the jungle.

Koh Phangan is home to few waterfalls inside Namtok Than Sadet National Park, as well as Phaeng Noi Waterfall and Khao Ra Waterfall.

Koh Samui is home to Na Muang Waterfall and Hin Lat Waterfall. Na Muang is easily accessible from the parking area while Hin Lat Waterfall has a nice trail along its stream to different levels.

Viewpoints and Hiking

All three islands have mountainous terrain with lots of viewpoints and hiking trails to explore. If you’re into hiking, these islands have great hiking trails for exploring.

Ko Tao is home to the famous John-Suwan Viewpoint. It is a short hike from the parking area. There are also many beautiful viewpoints on the northern part like the Grape Viewpoint, and Summit Viewpoint. These places can be reached after a long steep hike or on a good scooter (only for experienced drivers).

Koh Phangan’s famous viewpoints are on the north coast, inducing Bottle Beach Viewpoint and 420 Club Phangan near Mae Haad Beach and Koh Ma island. Bottle Beach Viewpoint is reachable within a short hike from the parking area, including the rock climbing at the last bit.

420 Club Phangan has stunning views of Koh Ma island below and is reached by riding a scooter on the steep road (only for experienced drivers).

Like Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, Samui also has some iconic viewpoints. Famous ones are the Overlap Stone 2, Pra Buddha Dīpankara, Big Buddha Viewpoint, and Hin Yai Hin Ta.

In terms of hiking, Koh Phang has the best jungle trail (in my opinion and experience). There are some good coastal trails in Koh Tao. In Koh Samui, most places are accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles and scooters in good condition.

In Koh Phangan, I  enjoyed hiking to Khao Ra Peak, to Haad Yuan Viewpoint & Beach, and to Dom Sila Viewpoint. In Koh Tao, I had a stunning coastal hike from Chalok baan kao bay to Cape Ja Te Kang.

Cultural Attractions

These islands on the western Gulf of Thailand are all about the beaches and mountain activities. They do not have popular cultural and historical attractions like Bangkok and other cities in central and north Thailand.

However, you can explore some small temples and cultural sites in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Samui is home to the Big Buddhas, Wat Plai Laem, Wat Khunaram, and Tarnim Garden. Phangan has some smaller local temples like Wat Phu Khao Noi, Chaloklum Temple, and Kuan Yin Temple (Chinese Temple).

Island Hopping

From Koh Tao, you can easily take a day trip to a nearby island called Koh Nang Yuan. You can hike to its viewpoints and enjoy the various beach activities.

Koh Phangan and Samui are closer to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, which is another famous destination in the region for snorkeling and exploring pristine beaches..

Getting Around

My scooer on Ko Tao
My scooer on Ko Tao

Koh Tao is the smallest island, and it is possible to get around the island on foot, especially if you’re fit and into hiking. Phangan and Samui are bigger islands, so walking around them isn’t feasible.

Renting a scooter, taking a tour, and hiring a private driver are popular ways to get around these islands. Taxis and local songthaews are easily found in popular places like the piers and main tourist towns.

If you rent a scooter on any of these islands, make sure you’re experienced drivers and be aware of their steep, sharped curved roads.

So you have it, my comparison of three popular islands on the western Gulf of Thailand. Overall, Koh Samui is the most developed island and the easiest one to reach, making it the best choice for first-timers, families, couples, or anyone wanting comfort and good infrastructure.

Koh Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party, but most of the island is quiet and peaceful. It is the best island in the group for digital nomads, yoga lovers, backpackers, or those who want both nightlife, nature, and wellness retreats.

Koh Tao is the smallest island among the three. It is the best island for diving and snorkeling as it’s one of the world’s top and cheapest places to learn scuba diving. This island has lively atmosphere but quieter nightlife than Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
