Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint: How to Get to & Travel Guide

Phi Phi Viewpoint is a popular tourist attraction in Phi Phi Don island. The viewpoint has stunning views of Tonsai Bay, Loh Dalum Bay, Tonsai Village, and limestone cliffs. It’s a must see place when staying on Koh Phi Phi Don.

Phi Phi Viewpoint is the central point to connect the beaches on the south and on the north of Phi Phi Don island, so you’ll be likely to pass these viewpoints when hiking around the island.

I passed this viewpoint twice when hiking from Laem Tong and Loh Ba Kao Bay in the north to Tonsai Village in the south as well as from Tonsai Village to Phak Nam Bay.

In this article, I will share with you the location of Phi Phi Viewpoint, how to get there, ticket entrance, how long do you need, opening hour, and best time to visit.

Phi Phi Viewpoint is the collection of 3 viewpoints located in the central inland of Phi Phi Don island. It is around mid way between Tonsai Pier in the south and Loh Ba Kao Bay on the north of the island.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 1,2, and 3 are located in the Muslim area, so no alcohol is allowed. There is a sign at entrance Viewpoint 1 saying “ No alcohol Allowed around here, fine 1000 baht”.  I also see a “No smoking” sign at Phi Phi Viewpoint 3.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 1

Phi Phi Viewpoint 1 is the closest viewpoint to Tonsai Village, Tonsai Pier, and Loh Dalum Beach. It’s around 20 minutes walk from Tonsai Village to Phi Phi Viewpoint 1.

The trail from Tonsai Pier to Phi Phi Viewpoint 1 includes a 10 minutes walk on relatively flat road and a 10 minute hike on around 320 concrete steep stairs.

You can easily use maps such as Google Maps or Map.me offline to navigate the direction to Phi Phi Viewpoint. There are also various signs in Tonsai Village showing the way to the viewpoint.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 1 is the lowest viewpoint, so you can see the village, Tonsai and Loh Dalum Bay, and the limestone cliffs up close. The viewpoint has “I Love Phi Phi” and “Viewpoint 1”  signs. It also has benches and a beautiful garden with plants and flowers to take photos.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 2 is 300m above Phi Phi Viewpoint 1. It’s about a 5 to 10 minute uphill walk from Phi Phi Viewpoint 1 to Phi Phi Viewpoint 2. There are signs along the way to show you directions.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 2 has the most beautiful views of the cluster of four viewpoints on Phi Phi Don island. This is where you can get the panoramic view of both Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay with the narrow strip of land in between.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 2 has a larger wooden viewpoint flatform. You can have the whole platform by yourself by mid day, but if you visit during sunset, it’s usually packed with people.

To the left side of the wooden platform is the big rock area with the trees. You can walk around these rocks to take photos.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 2 has a toilet area for 20 baht as well as a 3-floor Viewpoint Cafe and a convenience store selling ice cream, snacks, coconuts, and smoothies.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 3

Phi Phi Viewpoint 3 sits at a higher elevation than both Viewpoint 1 and Viewpoint 2. It also has less visited viewpoints, so it’s a peaceful place to visit escapely at sunset, when Viewpoint 1 and 2 are packed with people.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 3 is around 10-15 minutes walk from Viewpoint 2. It took me 6 minutes to walk down from Viewpoint 3 to Viewpoint 2. There are signs along the way to show you direction.

Entering Koh Phi Phi viewpoint 3 feels like entering someone’s private house. I need to take off my shoes when visiting. Inside, there is a viewing platform with shade trees, tables, chairs and a small shop selling drinks. The toilet is located outside of the house, and it costs 10 baht to use.

This Viewpoint doesn’t show on Google Maps but it has a good view of the crystal clear water of Phak Nam Bay. It’s around a 10 minute walk from Phi Phi Viewpoint 3 toward Loh Ba Kao Bay.

You can use offline Map.me to get an idea of the direction. It’s somewhere close to Phak Nam Bay. You can check out if you’re adventurous travelers. Otherwise, you can skip it as all the best views can be seen in Viewpoint 1,2, and 3.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 1 and 2 are the same owner, so you pay the ticket at one place. If you come from Tonsai Village, and Loh Dalum, you’ll need to pay at the entrance at Phi Phi Viewpoint 1. If you come from Laem Tong or Loh Ba Kao Bay, you need to pay at the entrance at Phi Phi Viewpoint 2.

Phi Phi Viewpoint 3 belongs to a different owner, so you need to pay a separate ticket. It’s 20 baht for an entrance ticket, and if you want to use the toilet it’s an extra 10 baht.

It takes around 20 minutes to get from Tonsai Village to Viewpoint 1, 5-10 minutes walk from Viewpoint 1 to Viewpoint 2, and 10-15 minutes walk from Viewpoint 2 to Viewpoint 3.

Each Viewpoint is a small area that can take 15-30 minutes to walk around and take photos. If you want to drink and enjoy the sunset, you can spend longer. Viewpoint 2 is where the classic postcard view is, so you can spend time longer at this viewpoint.

In total, you can expect to spend about two hours exploring Phi Phi Viewpoints 1, 2, and 3, including the hike up and down from Tonsai Village.

If you come to Phi Phi from the island’s Northern Beaches such as Laem Tong, and Loh Bao Kao, you need a longer time, around 3-4 hours in total, because the trail from these beaches to The viewpoint already takes around 45-60 minutes one way.

Best Time to Visit Phi Phi Viewpoint

The most popular time to visit Phi Phi Viewpoint is around sunset. In the late afternoon, the weather is cooler, so it’s more pleasant, with less sweating than at midday. Additionally, it has a beautiful background but golden light, limestone cliffs, and the beaches.

Sunset is also the most crowded time of the day. If you want to avoid crowds, cool weather, and you can wake up early, you can visit around sunrise. But it is difficult to wake up early, I planned to do it, but failed.

If you want to do it, you can set an alarm around 5.30 then reach the Viewpoint around 6am. The Viewpoint 1 and 2 open around 5.30-6am, which is a good time for sunrise. Viewpoint 3 opens late, around 9-10am, so you can skip this one at sunrise.

Apart from sunrise and sunset, it’s quieter, but the heat is strong. I didn’t make it at sunrise, and was able to visit the Viewpoint around 9.30 am. I ended up sweating a lot. There were some good shaded areas near the rocks and the minimart at the Viewpoint 2.

Opening Hour Phi Phi Viewpoint

According to Google Maps, Viewpoint 1 and 2 open around 6am and close at 7.30 when it gets dark. Google Maps also shows that Viewpoint 3 opens at 5.30 am and closes at 6.30pm, but it seems open a few more hours later in the day compared to Viewpoint 1 and 2.

If you visit during sunrise in the early morning, you can visit Viewpoint 1 and 2 which have stunning views. You can skip Viewpoint 3 as Viewpoint 1 and 2 already offer the most stunning views.

At sunset, you can visit Viewpoints 1, 2, and 3 because they all remain open until dark. I recommend planning your visit so you can finish before it gets dark, especially if you’re at Viewpoint 3. The trail to the Tonsai Village from these viewpoints involved steep stairs and dirt roads.

How to get to Phi Phi Viewpoint?

Most visitors visit Phi Phi Viewpoint on foot. I saw locals who live near the viewpoints have motorbikes, and a local at a minimart offered me a motorbike taxi to Long Beach when I walked from the Viewpoint area to the beach.

But anyway, motorbikes are not popular transportation on the island, so reaching the viewpoint from various locations around the island requires a walk.
