Koh Lanta and Ao Nang are two good beach destinations in Krabi Province. Ao Nang is a tourist hub of the region that has a lively nightlife scene and a wide range of tourist amenities. Koh Lanta is a quieter island with a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
In this article, I will compare Koh Lanta and Ao Nang, focusing on their location, accommodations, beaches, nightlife, shopping, food, and attractions.
I’ve stayed in both Koh Lanta and Ao Bang, as well as explored other popular parts of Krabi Provinces such as Koh Phi Phi, Koh Hong, and Krabi Town. I hope to share some helpful insights based on my firsthand experience.

Is it better to visit Koh Lanta or Ao Nang?
Generally speaking, Ao Nang is better in Koh Lanta if you want lively nightlife, and a convenient location for day trips to the Krabi’s famous islands and mainland attractions. You can easily take island hopping trips to Koh Hong, Railay, and Koh Phi Phi.

Koh Lanta is a better option than Ao Nang if you want a relaxing beach holiday with a more local atmosphere. If you want to escape from tourist crowds in Ao Nang and nearby islands such as Phuket or Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta is a great choice.
Ao Nang is more popular than Koh Lanta due to its prime location in Krabi Province. Ao Nang is Krabi’s main tourist hub, which is ideal for first-time visitors.
The downside of Ao Nang is that it can get very crowded and busy, especially during the high season. The prices for hotels, food, and drinks are usually more expensive than Ko Lanta.
I enjoyed my stay in both Ao Nang and Koh Lanta. I used Ao Nang as the base to explore Railay, Krabi Town, Tiger Cave Temple, day trips to Railay/ Tonsai, Koh Hong, and Koh Phi Phi. I also enjoyed the nightlife with lots of bars, restaurants, and a huge night market in Ao Nang.
I really appreciated the peaceful vibe and the more low-key feel of Koh Lanta. I rented a scooter to explore the island. It’s all about the beaches, and natural attractions. There is a steep hiking trail and a nice waterfall inside Ko Mu Lanta National Park to explore.
I also enjoyed driving around Koh Lanta Noi, which has an even more local atmosphere and is quieter than Ko Lanta Yai (the main island). There is a historic old town on the eastern coast for sightseeing and the main village in the north for shopping.
If you time is allowed, you can consider visiting both places as they are located in the same region, just 2 hours boat ride apart. During my trip to Southern Thailand, my journey took me through Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Ko Lipe, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao, and Phuket.
My recommend hotels in Ko Lanta:
- Luxury: Rawi Warin Resort
- Mid-range: Lanta Sand Resort
- Budget: The Blue Gecko
My top hotel picks in Ao Nang:
- Luxury: Anana Ecological Resort
- Mid-range: Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort
- Budget: Phu Pha Aonang Resort
Location & How to Get There
Both Ao Nang and Koh Lanta are located in Krabi Province in the Andaman Sea region. Koh Lanta is a 2 hour boat ride south of Ao Nang.

Ao Nang is easily reached by road and by boat. Koh Lanta is only accessible by boat. The closest airport to both Koh Lanta and Ao Nang is Krabi International Airport. It is a 40 minute taxi ride from Krabi Airport to Nang, and around 2,5-3 hours from the airport to Lanta by the combination of taxi and boat.
It is also easier to get to Ao Nang by road from Khao Lak, Khao Sok, and Phuket. There are also direct boat connections between Phuket and Ao Nang. The ease of access makes Ao Nang more popular than Koh Lanta.
Beaches
Both Koh Lanta and Ao Nang have good beaches for swimming, sunbathing, and watching the sunset. They are not the best beaches in Thailand, but still great for enjoying water activities.

Ao Nang has an advantage of the location, close to many beautiful beaches in Railay/Tonsai, Koh Phi Phi, and Koh Hong. These places have some of Thailand’s best beaches.
Major beaches in Ao Nang are Ao Nang Beach, Pai Plong Beach, and Nopharat Thara Beach. The beaches boast breathtaking views of dramatic limestone cliffs towering over the turquoise waters.
Major beaches in Koh Lanta are located on the western coast of the island. From north to south, you can visit Klong Dao, Long Beach, Klong Khong, Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay. There are also many small secluded braces such as Ao Nui Bay, Nui Beach, or Bam Boo Beach.
Accommodations

Both Ao Nang and Koh Lanta have a wide range of accommodations. As a more popular destination, Ao Nang tends to have more expensive accommodations compared to Koh Lanta. There are more luxury resort options in and around Ao Nang and Mainland Krabi than in Koh Lanta.
No matter which place you choose to visit, Ao Nang or Koh Lanta, make sure to book well in advance in the high season from November to May. Like all parts of Thailand, accommodations in these places are in high demand in this period of the year.

Nightlife

When it comes to nightlife, Ao Nang is definitely the better option. It’s the tourist hub of Krabi province, packed with bars, night clubs, restaurants, massage shops, and street food stalls. Many bars stay open until 2-3 am in the early morning.
Most bars are centered around the main street, and there is a huge night market called Ao Nang Landmark Night Market near Nopharat Thara Beach. You can watch Muay Thai matches, live performances, eat sea food, or drinks at this market.
The nightlife in Koh Lanta is very quiet. If you want a chilled nightlife with some good restaurants and bars to hang out after dark, Lanta is the place to go.
There are several bars scattered around the island, in major beach towns such as Long Beach, Klong Khong, or Klong Nin. But nothing compared to Ao Nang.
Shopping

Ao Nang is a more touristy area, so it has more shops. There are many independent shops along the main road selling souvenirs and beach accessories. The Ao Nang Landmark Night Market also has many stalls where you can buy typical Thai handicraft items.
If you want more shopping, you can always head to Krabi Town where you can find a small shopping center and many markets. There are some cool items at the Weekend Walking Street Night Market in Krabi Town.
Koh Lanta has some small tourist shops scattered around the island. No big shopping malls here. Popular places to shop are Sala Dan (the main town) and the Old Town. You can find general local handicrafts, artisan goods, and souvenirs.
Food

There are more good varieties in Ao Nang. You can easily find restaurants serving Thai food and international dishes like Indian, Italian, or Vietnamese. There are fast food chains such as McDonald’s in Ao Nang.
The food in Ao Nang caters mostly to tourists. If you want authentic local foods, you can find many options in Krabi Town, located around a 30 minute taxi right away. I found some good restaurants along the river near Chao Fah Park.
The food in Koh Lanta is mainly local food at local restaurants and street food stalls at the night market. Both Ao Nang and Koh Lanta have large Muslim populations, so you can easily find halal food in both places.
Cultural & Natural attractions

In addition to the beaches, Ao Nang and Koh Lanta have several cultural and natural attractions to explore. In Koh Lanta, you can check out the Mu Koh Lanta National park, where you can hike to Klong Chak Waterfalls, and check out the challenging natural trail to the light house and a sandy beach.
The Old Town is the highlight of Koh Lanta. It’s a charming, laid-back town on the eastern coast, full of old wooden houses, local restaurants, and shops. It is a great place to get a sense of the island’s historical connection to Chinese and Malay cultures.
The highlight cultural attractions near the Ao Nang is the Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple). This is a Buddhist temple located on a hilltop that requires a steep climb over 1,200 steps to reach. It has panoramic views of the surrounding beautiful landscapes.
If you like hiking, you can visit the Dragon’s Crest (Ngon Nak Nature Trail). This place has a moderately challenging hike that leads to spectacular viewpoints offering breathtaking views of the region.
There are also plenty of rock climbing, and hiking opportunities in Railay and Tonsai, which is located only a 10-25 minutes boat ride from Ao Nang.
Island Hopping

Both Ao Nang and Koh Lanta are located in the Andaman Sea, so it’s a good base for boat trips to famous islands in the region. They have similar distance to the iconic Phi Phi island, so day trips are easily organized from either place.
Ao Nang is a more convenient location to get to Hong Island, Railay/ Tonsai, James Bond islands, Poda Island, Chicken Island, Tup Island. From Koh Lanta, it is convenient for snorkeling and diving tours to Koh Rok and Koh Haa.
Getting Around
Ao Nang is more popular than Koh Lanta so it has more taxi options, including riding share services such as Grab, Bolt, and InDrive. Koh Lanta doesn’t offer these services, but it does have local songthaews and tuk-tuks.
You can rent a scooter to explore each area. I rented a scooter in Koh Lanta but in Ao Nang, I get around on foot, by Grab, and long tail boats. I rented a scooter when I moved to Krabi Town.
The center area of Ao Nang is relatively small, so it is easy to get around on foot. If you are tired of walking or want to avoid the heat, there are plenty of tuk tuks and Grab Bikes to get around within a short distance.

So, you have it, my comparison between Koh Lanta and Ao Nang. Overall, Ao Nang is a better place to visit if you want a central location to explore Krabi both mainland and islands. It is ideal for first-timers, and those who want a lively nightlife scene, easily accessible, and easy day trips to nearby islands.
Koh Lanta is a better place to visit for those who want a relaxing beach holiday with a more local authentic atmosphere. Ideal for those who don’t mind limited tourist amenities and quiet nightlife.
