Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai National Park

Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai are popular tourist destinations near Bangkok. Kanchanaburi is known for its good mix of cultural and natural attractions, and Khao Yai is famous for its natural attractions, cooler weather, and diverse wildlife.

In this article, I will compare Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai, based on their location, cultural/ natural attractions, wildlife, nightlife, shopping, and food.

I’ve traveled to both places, as well as many other destinations in Thailand, so I hope to give you some useful recommendations based on my experience. Read on to find out which one is better for your visit, Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai.

Is it better to stay in Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai?

I enjoyed exploring both Khao Yai and Kanchanaburi and feel fortunate to have visited them. These are some of the stops on my journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by road. Along this route, I visited Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Khao Yai, Lopburi, Sukhothai, and Chiang Mai.

I love Kanchanaburi for its beautiful temples, historical attractions related to WWII, good night markets, and breaktaking waterfalls. My favorite places are Erawan Waterfalls, the train ride from Kanchanburi to Namtok, and Tiger Cave Temple.

In Khao Yai, I love exploring the wildlife and waterfalls inside the national park. We did some hiking and visited nearby attractions like a natural spring, a cave temple, and watched billions of bats fly out of their cave to hunt for food at sunset.

Both places are easily accessible by train from Bangkok. This is a great way of travel in Thailand, seeing the countryside from an open window and experience local life on the train.

Generally speaking, Kanchanaburi is better than Khao Yai if you want to explore beautiful temples, historical attractions, and iconic waterfalls in one place.

Kanchanaburi also has more tourist amenities and more vibrant nightlife, so you have more things to do at night after day sightseeing.

Khao Yai is a better place to visit if you’re all about natural attractions with wildlife spotting, hiking, and visiting famous waterfalls. This area also has cooler weather than Bangkok and Kanchanaburi, which is a great place to stay to escape from the heat.

Location & How to Get There

Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai are located in Central Bangkok, situated on opposite sides of Bangkok. Kanchanaburi is around 130km north west of Bangkok. Khao Yai is around 140km north east of Bangkok.

You can take a train from Bangkok to either Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai. Kanchanaburi Train Station is located right in the heart of Kanchanaburi City Center, so it’s very convenient to get to your hotel from the station.

The closest train station to Khao Yai National Park is Pak Chong Station, located 30km away. Pak Chong is also the main town in the region. Many people choose to stay in Pak Chong, then take tours or rent a scooter to get to the National Park.

In addition to trains, there are bus services from Bangkok to both Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai. I personally prefer taking the train because it is safer and more scenic than taking the buses.

Accommodations

Both areas have a wide range of accommodations for all preferences. There are many small mid-range and budget guest houses and backpacker hostels. They are mostly family-run accommodations, which create a more homey atmosphere.

There are some big hotels and resorts around Khao Yai National Park such as InterContinental Resort, which is great for retreat and relaxation.

Like all parts of Thailand, accommodations are often in high demand during the peak season. The prices usually go up a lot, and rooms tend to fill up quickly. So always make sure to book well in advance if you are traveling to these places during the period from November to May.

Cultural and Historical Attractions

Kanchanaburi is without a doubt the winner for those looking to do some sightseeing, visiting beautiful temples and historical attractions.

Kanchanaburi has many historical sites, museums, and cemeteries that are related to World War II. It is a great place to learn the history of the region.

Hellfire Pass

Kanchanaburi was an important part of the Death Railway built to connect Bangkok (Thailand) and Rangoon (Burma) during World War II.

The Japanese army used Allied prisoners of war and Asian laborers in harsh conditions causing thousands of deaths, making the railway a major historical site today.

Some famous sites are the Bridge over the River Kwai, the Death Railway, Hellfire Pass, JEATH War Museum, Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. You can consider taking the train ride from Kanchaburi to Namtok, visiting the iconic Tham Krasae Bridge and the cave.

In addition to the historical attractions, there are many temples around Kanchanaburi to explore. These not only offer a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful architecture, but also great hiking destinations. I recommend visiting Wat Ban Tham, Wat Tham Suea, and Wat Tham Khao Pun.

There is a beautiful cave near Wat Tham Suea, offering stunning views of the temple and the rice terrace. You can take a look at the Giant Raintree while in the region.

Khao Yai does not have any significant temples or historical sites. During my half day trip to the Bat Cave, we visited Wat Sa Nam Sai with beautiful views at the top and the underground temple.

Nature and wildlife

Both Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai have stunning natural landscapes, but in my opinion, Khao Yai is a better location for spotting wild animals, especially wild elephants crossing the road.

There are also many natural attractions and outdoor activities in and around Khao Yai National Park. You can go hiking, explore breathtaking waterfalls, swim at natural springs, and spot many wild animals. There are hornbills, snakes, wild elephants, gibbons, and deers.

Kanchanburi is surrounded by nature such as rivers, mountains, and national parks. There are beautiful waterfalls in the region such as the Erawan Falls. Unlike waterfalls in Khao Yai, you can swim at the pool at the waterfalls in Kanchanburi. They are also great hiking destinations.

Nightlife

Khao Yai and Kanchanaburi are not the best places to go in Thailand for nightlife. They both have quiet relaxing nightlife scenes.

Kanchanaburi is more developed than Khao Yai and Pak Chong, so it has livelier nightlife. You can find more night markets scattered around the city, and various bars and restaurants concentrated on the main road and along the riverside.

Most nightlife in Khao Yai is concentrated at Pak Chong. There are some restaurants and a night market located in this area. Khao Yai is all about natural beauty.

Shopping

Shops Kanchanaburi

From my experience, there are more shopping opportunities in Kanchanburi than Khao Yai. Kanchanburi has several night markets where you can buy typical Thai souvenirs.

I recommend checking out the JJ night market near the train station, and a couple riverside night markets such as The Saturday Walking Street Night Market near the Sky Walk and the Friday Wat Nuea Floating Market. You can find good street massages, live music performances, and many food stalls here.

Pak Chong has a small night market with just several stalls selling street food and souvenirs, clothing, and accessories.

Food

Both areas have a wide range of local Thai food. I didn’t  see many restaurants serving international dishes in each region. If you stay in a nice hotel and resort, you might see them serving western dishes.

The food can be found at the night markets and the family-run restaurants in the main street in each area. In Kanchanburi, I prefer eating at the JJ Night market because it is usually cheaper and more tasty than in the restaurants.

While in Pak Chong, I prefer eating at the local restaurant than the market. There weren’t many choices at the night market and it did not look appealing to me.

Getting Around & Transportation

There are more local taxis, private songthaews, and even Grab in Kanchanabri. There are also bus and train connections to famous sites like Hellfire Pass and Erawan Falls. Khao Yai is more remote with limited no riding share services such as Grab, Bolt, and InDriver.

You can rent a scooter in both places for explorations. The easiest ways to get around without a car/ scooter is by taking a guided tour or hiring a private driver.

In Kanchanaburi, I used a combination of walking and using Grab Bikes within the city center. For further attractions, outside towns, I used a local bus/train, and hired a private driver.

In Khao Yai, I stayed in Pak Chong near the train station, so I walked around for food, a night market, and the train station. I used guided tours to explore the national parks and wildlife safari.

So there you have it, my comparison between Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai. Overall, Kanchanaburi is the better base if you want a good combination of history, cultural, and natural attractions. Kanchanaburi also has a better range of tourist amenities such as night markets, bars, restaurants, and shops.

Khao Yai is more ideal for natural lovers and those who want to spot wildlife, especially wild elephants crossing the road. It, for me, has a more remote feel compared to Kanchanaburi. It has cooler weather, which is also great if you want to escape from the heat of Bangkok.
