Is it Better to Stay in Lamai or Bophut?

Lamai and Bophut are two good places to stay in Koh Samui. They are both the quieter version of Chaweng, the busy tourist hub of the island. Both areas offer good locations, beautiful beaches, and a wide range of tourist amenities.

In this article, I will compare Lamai and Bophut Beach, focusing on their location, accommodations, beaches, nightlife, shopping, food, and attractions.

I’ve traveled around Thailand  extensively and I rented a scooter to explore Koh Samui, so I hope to provide useful information to help you determine which area suits your needs best, Lamai or Bophut Beach.

Which area is better, Lamai or Bophut?

Both Lamai and Bophut offer a more laid back atmosphere compared to the island’s main town, Chaweng. They are the perfect base for those who want a quiet beach holiday but still have easy access to a range of tourist amenities and a relatively central location.

I personally prefer staying in Lamai because it has a nicer beach, livelier nightlife, and its close proximity to many attractions like Hin Ta Hin Yai, Na Muang Waterfall, Tarnim Magic Garden, Wat Khunaram, or Overlap Stones. It is also near beautiful beaches like Coral Cove and Crystal Beach.

Bophut

Bophut is the better location for families, couples, and older crowds who want a bit quieter atmosphere. This area has an upscale atmosphere with more high end hotels and restaurants. It is famously known for its trendy Fisherman Village with old wooden shop-houses, boutique shops, and nice restaurants.

If you want to stay close to Samui International Airport, and some of the island’s main piers like Pralarn Pier and Bangrak Pier, Bophut is a better choice. Bophut also has a convenient location to explore the northern coast of Samui. It is close to the Big Buddha, Mae Nam, and Choeng Mon Beach.

Lamai is a bit further from the airport, but it is an excellent base to explore the southern part of Koh Samui, where the majority of famous attractions are located.

Generally speaking, Bophut is best for families, couples who want nice restaurants, boutique shopping, stylish resorts, relaxing evenings with some sophistication.

Lamai is best for solo travelers, families, and couples who want a more lively nightlife but not crazy scene, a better beach, local vibe, and also maybe a slightly more budget-friendly option.

My recommended stays in Lamai:

Best hotels to stay in Bophut:

Location

Bophut is located on the northern coast of Koh Samui, between Mae Nam Beach and Bang Rak Beach. It is around 6-7km north west of Samui International Airport and Chaweng. Lamai is located on the southern eastern part of Koh Samui, around 11km south of Chaweng and the airport.

Bophut has a more convenient location for those who want to stay closer to the airport, the piers, and the party hub of the island’s – Chaweng. If you have a late arrival or early departure by boat from/to nearby islands like Koh Tao or Koh Phangan, it is a good idea to stay in Bophut.

Lamai, on the other hand, is the best base to explore South Samui. You can easily get to famous sights like Overlap Stones, Hin Ta Hin Yai, Wat Khunaram with the mummified monk, Na Muang Waterfall, and Tarnim Garden.

Accommodations

Both Bophut and Lamai have accommodations for all budgets. However, Bophut has more high-end choices and Lamai has more budget-friendly and mid-range accommodations.

If you are looking for a upscale beach town with stylish resorts, Bophut is the place to go. If you want a good mix of all different budgets, Lamai is the area for you.

Both these areas are popular places to stay in Koh Samui, so make sure to book your accommodations in advance to avoid disappointment. Accommodations are often in high demand in the high season from November to May.

Beaches

Bophut Beach

In my opinion, Lamai Beach is slightly better than Bophut Beach. Lamai has a longer stretch of nice wide beach with soft, white sand and clean waters while Bophut Beach is narrower and has grittier, golden sand. The water in Bophut Beach is not always clear and can sometimes appear murky.

Both beaches are good places for swimming, sunbathing, walking, and enjoy water sports like jet skiing. There are bars, restaurants, sunbeds, umbrellas, and massage places along the beach.

Lamai Beach has scenic boulders, called Hin Ta Hin Yai, at the southern end of the beach. This place has stunning views of the whole coast line. It is especially beautiful at sunset.

Both the beachfront of Lamai and Bophut have a romantic atmosphere in the evening. Along the beach, you’ll find laid-back bars and restaurants with tables, chairs, and bean bags right on the sand, glowing with candles and fairy lights.

Nightlife

Both Lamai and Bophut have more relaxed nightlife than in Chaweng. Lamai has a bit more livelier nightlife than Bophut. If you want a reasonable party scene, Lamai is the place to go.

You can explore Lamai Night Market, and many bars and restaurants along the Had Lamai Road and on the beachfront area. There are go-go bars and clubs on the Had Lamai Road, but the atmosphere is not less intense than Chaweng.

The Lamai Night Market is open every night, and is a great place to drink and try street food. There are tables and chairs to sit at the market. On the beach, you can find some romantic restaurants and chill bars with the views of the ocean.

Bophut has some good bars  and trendy restaurants along the beach and Fisherman’s Village Night Market. It is a great place for a more refined evening with good food, drinks in stylish settings.

Shopping

Both Lamai and Bophut have good enough independent shops, and stalls at the night markets for you to shop typical Thai souvenirs. Unlike Chaweng, these areas do not have huge malls. If you want to shop in the modern shopping mall, you need to travel to Chaweng to visit Central Samui Mall.

Bophut has a more boutique and upscale shopping feel compared to Lamai. Bophut is a better place to find browsing for unique items, design pieces, and boutique stores.

In both areas, at Fisherman Village Night Market and Lamai Night Market, you can find stalls selling clothing, jewellery, beachwear, crafts, as well as food stalls.

Food

Both areas have a wide range of food options. The restaurants and food stalls at Bo Phut Fisherman’s Village Night Market and The Wharf Walking Street have more stylish settings. The food is also usually more expensive than in Lamai.

In my opinion, there are more local food scenes in Lamai. It was easy for me to find good cheap family-run local restaurants and street stalls at local markets. The food scene in Bophut is more touristy.

Attractions

Both Lamai and Bophut have their own attractions and there are also numerous beaches and attractions within a short drive from these areas.

In Lamai, you can explore Lamai Beach, Lamai Night Market, and Grandfather & Grandmother rocks. It is also close to many other famous attractions like Overlap Stones, Wat Khunaram, Na Muang Waterfall, Tarnim Garden, and Pra Buddha Dīpankara.

In Bophut, you can explore Bophut Beach, Fisherman’s Village Night Market, and The Wharf Walking Street. Nearby, you can visit the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, Maenam, Bang Rak, or Ban Tai Beach.

Bophut is also closer to Chaweng, only 15 minutes drive away, so if you want to visit the island’s main town for nightlife, you can do it easily from Bophut.

So, you have it, my comparison between two popular beach towns in Koh Samui. Overall, Bophut is a better location to stay if you want to stay in a more upscale atmosphere, and close proximity to the airport and the island’s main port. Lamai is a better area if you want a more lively nightlife and more central location to explore all the famous attractions and beaches on the island.
