Is it better in Kata or Kamala Beach?

Kata and Kamala are two great beaches on Phuket located on the west coast of the island. They’ve got something in common as their names are full of A’s. Kidding, of course, they both have good beaches, a wide range of tourist amenities, and are in close proximity to the island’s nightlife hub.

In this article, I will give you the comparison of Kata and Kamala, focusing on the location, beach, nightlife, shopping, food, accommodations, and attractions. I hope you will find which one is a better place to stay for your visit to Phuket.

I stayed in several areas all around Phuket and rented a scooter to explore the island. I also have traveled extensively around Thailand, so I’ll do my best to give you the most helpful advice possible.

Is it better to stay in Kata or Kamala Beach?

I personally prefer staying in Kata than in Kamala. This is because Kata has livelier nightlife, compact size, and more convenient location to explore the south of Phuket. In addition to the close proximity to Patong, it is closer to popular points of interests like the old town, Big Buddha, or Wat Chalong.

Phuket is notoriously known for its traffic jams and expensive taxi services, so staying in the more central location will save you time and money on transportation.

Kamala, on other hand, is closer to the airport, and is a great base to explore the beaches on the north like Surin, Bang Tao, Banana, Nai Thon, or Mai Khao Beach. It has quieter nightlife, more luxury resorts, and beachfront bars and restaurants.

Both Kata and Kamala are family-friendly beach towns with family-friendly, lots of tourist amenities, and quieter than Patong but still close to it.

Generally speaking, Kata is a better base for those looking for lively nightlife, and a good central location to explore the famous sights on the island. From Kata, you can even walk to nearby beaches like Karon and Kata Noi, which offer more beach activities.

Kamala is a better choice if you want a quieter atmosphere, close proximity to the airport, and more beachfront bars and restaurants. This area is popular among long-term travelers, and retirees.

If you have lots of time on Phuket, you can consider staying in both areas to fully experience what each town has to offer. I, like many other visitors, stayed in multiple areas of Phuket like the old town, Patong, and the Karon/ Kata area. It’s a good idea to see each area both day and night.

Top recommended stays in Kamala:

My recommended hotels in Kata:

Location

Both Kata and Kamala are located on the west coast of Phuket, close to Patong, which is the nightlife hub of the island. Kata is around 8km south of Patong, and Kamala is around 8km north of Patong.

Kamala is closer to the airport than Kata. Kamala is around 25km away from the airport, while Kata is around 45km away from the airport. Kata is closer to Phuket Old Town, only 15km away, while Kamala is around 20km away.

Kata is located a bit further south, making it a better location to explore the south of Phuket. This part is home to many popular tourist attractions like the Big Buddha, the old town, Wat Chalong, Promthep Cape, Windmill Viewpoint, Karon Beach, and Nai Harn Beach.

Kamala is a good location to explore the beaches on the northwest coast of Phuket. Compared to Kata, it is closer to Bang Tao, Nai Thon, Banana Beach, and Mai Khao Beach.

Accommodations

Both Kata and Kata have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. Most accommodations in Kata Beach are located on Kata road, around 120 meters from the beachfront area. There are just several beachfront resorts on the ends of the beach.

For luxury beachfront resorts in the Kata area, you can stay in Kata Noi Beach, which is a smaller version of Kata Beach located just south of the main beach.

There are more beachfront resorts and hotels in Kamala than Kata. Some high end resorts in this area like InterContinental, Novotel, or Twinpalms MontAzure.

Both areas are very popular places to stay in Phuket, so make sure to book your accommodations well in advance if you travel to the island during the pearl period from November to May.

Beach

Both beaches in Kata and Kamala have good conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and chilling. They have similar length, Kata is around 1,5km long and Kamala is around 2km long.

I personally prefer Kata Beach over Kamala Beach. The beach has white sand, and is lined with umbrellas and bed chairs for rent. There is the beach market along the beach road where you can buy snacks and drinks to bring to the beach.

In addition to swimming, the beach is also a good spot for surfing and other watersport activities such as jet skiing. There are a couple of beachfront restaurants and bars at the southern end of Kata Beach.

If you want to change the beach atmosphere at Kata Beach, you can easily get to nearby neighboring Karon and Kata Noi beach. Depending on your location on Kata, you can walk to these beaches easily or take a short Grab Taxi Ride.

Kamala Beach is a long beach and is a good spot for swimming, especially the area in the north and central part of the beach. The southern beach is where boats dock; the seabed is muddy and not ideal for swimming.

Kamala Beach is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops on the beachfront area. There is a market with lots of food stalls near Tsunami Memorial Park. The famous Café del Mar Beach Club is located at the northern part of the beach.

From Kamala, you can drive for a few minutes to the north to Surin Beach and Haad Laem Sing Beach. These places are great for swimming and chilling.

Nightlife

Kata has a livelier nightlife scene with lots of restaurants, bars, and night markets along Kata Road. The area around Kata Night Market and KT Plaza are always full of people shopping and eating street food.

Kamala has a quieter nightlife scene with a few beach clubs as well as the evening shows at Carnival Magic and Phuket FantaSea.

Both Kata and Kamala are close to Patong, the nightlife heart of Phuket. You can always take a short taxi ride to Patong for more nightlife options.

Shopping

Kata Night Market
Kata Night Market

Both Kata and Kamala are not the best places to go shopping on Phuket. However, you can find a wide variety of shops selling typical Thai souvenirs. These are at the markets, small shopping centers, or independent shops.

The large Jungceylon Mall in Patong is just a short drive from both Kata and Patong. If you’re looking to do more shopping, Patong is only a quick trip away.

Food

It is easy to find a wide range of food in both Kata and Kamala. In Kata, there are lots of street food options at the beach market and the night markets along Kata Road.

In Kamla, there are street food stalls and restaurants along the beachfront as well as at Kamala Night Market. There are many Halal food options in Kamala as it is a mainly muslim town.

Family-friendly Atmosphere

Both Kata and Kamala offer a family-friendly atmosphere with family-friendly, quieter atmosphere than in Patong, and lots of kid-friendly accommodations. There are plenty of restaurants and shops in each area, so your family can easily access these tourist amenities.

Cultural Attractions

Both Kata and Kamala have some local cultural attractions. There are some Muslim mosques and a Buddhist temple in Kamala. In Kata, you can visit nearby Karon Temple, or take a short taxi drive to the Big Buddha or Wat Chalong.

Hiking Opportunities & Viewpoints

Both Kata and Kamala villages are located between the beachfront and the hillside, so there are good hiking opportunities. Each area has beautiful viewpoints that are accessible by either vehicle or on foot.

Laem Sing Viewpoint

Karon Viewpoint

In Kata, you can hike to the Big Buddha, which is a challenging trail with lots of steep parts. The Big Budha has stunning views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. In Kamala, you can check the hike to the Kalim Viewpoint, Kathu Waterfall, and Bang Wan Waterfall.

To the north of Kamala, you can easily get to Laem Sing Beach Viewpoint, which has nice views of Laem Sing Beach below. It is located on the road between Kamala and Surin, and is easily accessible by a scooter or a car.

Within a short drive south of Kata, you can explore Karon Viewpoint. This viewpoint is right on the island’s main road 4030, and has stunning views of 3 beaches: Kata, Karon, and Kata Noi. Nearby, you can check out Black Rock Viewpoint and Cape Krathing.

Getting to and Getting Around

Both Kata and Kamala are easily accessible by road. You can get metered taxi or riding services such as Grab, Bolt, or InDriver from other areas in Phuket to get to these towns. There are buses connecting the airport, the old town, and Patong, to both Kata and Kamala.

The taxi ride from Phuket airport to Kamala is around 600-800 baht, and it costs more to get to Kata, around 900-1900 baht. If you are on a budget, you can take the smart bus ride, which only costs 100 baht to get to either Kamala or Kata.

Within the central area of each town, you can get around on foot. There are also lots of tuk tuk, metered taxi, and riding share services available for use. You can consider renting a scooter or a car, which are cheaper and easier ways to get around.

So there you have it, my comparison between Kata and Kamala. They are both located in a relatively good area close to the famous Patong. They also have a quieter atmosphere than Patong, as well as a nice beach for families.

Overall, I recommend staying in Kata if you want a livelier nightlife and closer to attractions on the south Phuket including the Old Town and Promthep Cape. If you want a quieter nightlife, more access to beachfront restaurants, bars, and luxury resorts, Kata is a better choice.
