How to Spend 5-7 Days In Phuket Itinerary

Phuket is one of the top beach destinations in South Thailand. In this article, I will share with you my itinerary for 5-7 days in Phuket and my opinion on how many days in Phuket is enough.

As the largest island in Thailand, approximately 50 km long, Phuket offers plenty of things to do and see. It is best known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife scene, temples, night markets, and island hopping opportunities. The island is accessible from the mainland by road, air, and boat.

Patong Beach and Old Town are the two main areas of Phuket, located 14 km away by road. South Phuket is generally the busy part of the island, while the north offers a quieter atmosphere. The airport is located in the north, the main pier is located in the old town.

How Many days in Phuket is enough?

From my personal experience, 5-7 days is a good amount of time to spend in Phuket to do sightseeing, beach hopping, and enjoy the nightlife. I stayed in Phuket for 5 nights and was able to see the most important attractions.

If you just relax on the beach, or explore the island at a slow pace, you can spend as much time as you have. There are plenty of things to do and see and you’ll never get bored. You can explore the island itself and take day trips to nearby Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao, or Jame Bond island.

If you rent a motorbike, you can easily drive around the island from north to south within a day or two. Otherwise, you can choose to take guided tours or use taxi, Grab, Bolt, Indrive for exploration. You can easily book the “Around island tour”, which will take you to major sights within one full day.

How to spend 5-7 days in Phuket

Here are my recommendations on things to do on Phuket and how long I spend to do each activity:

# 1. Phuket Old Town and the east coast. This part is known for its historic old town, authentic street food, and local atmosphere. I recommend spending at least one to two full days exploring the major side on the east coast of Phuket.

With this timeframe, you can visit the old town, Rawai Beach, Promthep Cape, Chillva Night market, Monkey Viewpoint, Wat Chalong, and Central Phuket Mall.

#2. West Coast of Phuket. The west coast is known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife scene. I recommend spending at least two to three days on this side of the island. You can spend one full day for the south west coast and one full day on the north west coast.

Within one full day in the south west coast, I can visit popular beaches such as Karon, Kata, Kata Noi, Nai Harn Beach, and Yanui Beach. I also managed to hike the Black Rock Viewpoint, visit Windmill Viewpoint and the Big Buddha.

Within another full day, I can do beach hopping on the north west coast, visiting Patong, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Nai Thon, and Mai Khao Beach.

#3. Island hopping. Phuket is a great base for island hopping. You can take many day trips from Phuket such as boat trips to Koh Phi Phi, Jameboned island, or Ko Yao Yai & Noi.

Getting to Phuket:

Getting to Phuket is easily by airplane, car, and ferry. It is home to an international airport located in the northern part of the island.

Additionally, it is connected with mainland Thailand by a bridge, so you can access Phuket by road. There are also piers where you can get ferries or speed boats from other islands such as Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Koh Yao.

Getting Around Phuket:

I explored Phuket on a scooter, and personally believe that it is the best way to explore the island. But riding a scooter on Phuket is not for everyone. You need to be an experienced driver and have a valid international license to do it.

If you don’t rent a scooter, you can rent a car, use public transport, rideshare services or private transfer. As a popular tourist destination, Phuket has tons of transport options.

There is Traditional Thai transport such as tuk-tuks, songthaews, as well as public buses, private taxis, and Uber-like services such as Grab, Bolt, and InDrive.

Best time to visit Phuket:

The best time to travel to Phuket is from November to March. This is the dry season with beautiful weather, little to no rain, calm sea, which is ideal for beaches and outdoor activities.

The dry season is also the high season; It can be more crowded and expensive than other times of the year. If you are traveling to Phuket during this time, be sure to book tours, accommodations, and boats in advance.

Between June and October, Phuket has the highest rainfalls. It is also the low seas and is a good time to visit for budget travelers and surfers.

Top areas to stay in Phuket for tourists:

The most popular areas to stay in Phuket are the beaches on the west coast of the island, running from Kamala to Kata. Patong Beach, located in the middle west coast, is the main party location on Phuket.

If you don’t want to stay in the heart of the nightlife, you can choose to stay in Patong’s neighboring beaches such as Kalama, Karon, and Kata. These beaches offer more quieter and family-friendly atmosphere while still having easy access to the party and beaches.

If you don’t mind being further away from the beaches and want to explore the local atmosphere, Phuket old town is a great base. You can stay on a beach on the west coast and take a day trip to the old town, or split your stay in both the beach and the old town to experience both sides. See more: Where to Stay in Phuket.

Day 1: Arrival and Phuket Old Town

I came to Phuket from Koh Yao Yai. I took the speed boat at Chong Lard Pier on Koh Yao Yai at around 3.15pm and arrived at Bang Rong Pier on Phuket at 3.50pm.

Bang Rong Pier

Bang Rong Pier is a small pier located on the north east coast of Phuket, around 25 km north of Phuket Old Town. This pier mainly offers speed boats and long tail boats to Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi.

Bang Rong Pier

There is a ticket booth, taxi stand, and a couple of restaurants and a mini mart at the pier. From Bang Rong Pier, I used InDrive to get to my hostel in Phuket Old Town. The traffic in the late afternoon was quite heavy. It took me 50 minutes to get to the old town and it cost 360 baht.

When traveling around Thailand, I prefer using InDrive because it is usually cheaper than Grab and Bolt. You can also check the price on all the apps to use the best option.

Early dinner at 1000009 Thai Noodle Restaurant

My dinner at Phuket old town

I was craving for noodles and found this restaurant on Montri Road near the old town. The noodle soup is a must. You can choose your own ingredients for the soup. I had big noodles, stew beef and beef balls. It was delicious and the price was reasonable.

I also came back to the shop next night to try the beef salad and steam rice. It was also very tasty and I highly recommend it.

Phuket Old Town

The Old Town is busy in the late afternoon and evening. It is very beautiful during sunset. I spent a whole evening walking around the old town, exploring major attractions on Thalang Road, Phang Nga Road, and Dibuk Road.

Old Town Clock Tower
Old Town Clock Tower

The Old Town is packed with colorful well-preserved Sino-Portuguese style buildings, beautiful murals, Chinese temples, trendy shops selling souvenirs and clothes, as well as cafes, bars, and markets.

The best way to explore Old Town is by simply wandering around the main roads and smaller alleys and getting lost. You might come across some beautiful sights along the way.

Some popular sights in the old town are the clock tower, Golden Dragon Monument, Soi Romanee, Phuket Indy Night Market. If you are visiting the old town on Sunday, you can check out the Lard Yai Sunday Night Market on Thalang road.

Phuket Indy Night Market

The Indy Night Market opens at night every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. It is a small night market located opposite Limelight shopping center, right off Dibuk Road.

Central Phuket Shopping Mall

I needed somewhere to rest after hiking outside in the heat. Central Phuket is an air-conditioned mall and is a great stop for  taking a break from the heat. It is located 10 minutes drive from the old town and 20 minutes from Monkey Hill.

The Mall is huge and is home to a foot court. I had crispy pork belly and rice at the mall. There are two different buildings at the mall connecting to each other by a walkway.

You can park the scooter here, take a songthaews or rent an ATV to reach Nui Beach or Black Rock Viewpoint. I drove my scooter all the way to the end of the big red road, parked my scooter, and hiked to the viewpoint. I didn’t drive to Nui Beach as the road is more difficult and better with a 4 wheel car.

It was just a few minute hike through the jungle to reach the viewpoint. This viewpoint has stunning views of Nai Harn Beach and you can enjoy the views without a crowd. It was only me and two other people at the viewpoint at the time I visited it.

Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao Beach is long and quiet and is a good spot to watch the sunset and airplane landing at very close distance.

It was getting dark and I had to drive to Phuket Old Town to return the scooter to the rental shops before they closed at 8pm. I was back to the shop on time, took my money back, and ordered Indrive to get back to my hotel in Patong.

Nightlife in Patong

It was a long day and I was a bit tired, so I just had a look around the Banzaan night market and the major shopping areas. I came home and packed my suitcase for the next day’s flight back to Australia.

Day 6: Island Hopping: Day trip to Phi Phi island/ Jame Bond island

There are so many island hopping trips from Phuket. Popular ones are day trips to Phi Phi island and Jame Bond island. I stayed in Phi Phi islands for a few nights and highly recommend it.

With a full day speed boat tour to Phi Phi from Phuket, you can visit the most famous attractions on the Phi Phi islands. The tour often includes a visit to Maya Bay, Pileh Bay, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, Bamboo island, with a lunch in Tonsai village.

Day 7: Leaving, other day trips, or rest

On my last day in Phuket, I checked out the Banzaan Fresh market near me to buy some fresh fruits to bring to the airport to eat on the airplane. I had breakfast at McDonald’s as I was craving for western fast food.

Later, I booked InDrive to get to the airport. It was a peak traffic hour, and I had many offers from drivers. I accepted an offer from the drivers nearest to me. It was 800 baht on the app but then he messaged me to demand 1200 baht with a reason that it is the peak hour.

I canceled the driver and made the new request. I got another driver with cheaper prices. Prices of Grab, Bolt, and InDrive fluctuate all the time depending on traffic. It took me 90 minutes to get to Phuket airport from Patong and I had a thought that i’m gonna miss the flight many times in the car.

I still had lots of time to check in and I gave the driver extra tips.

There are endless things to do and see in Phuket if you have more available time or are slow travelers. You can split my above itinerary into smaller sections to visit.

So there you have it, my guide on how to spend 5-7 days in Phuket. I believe that 5-7 days is generally enough to explore major sights, enjoy the beach activities, the nightlife, and the food. I hope my itinerary will help you have an idea of what you want to do on this island.
