Chiang Mai or Krabi, Which is better?

Chiang Mai and Krabi are two popular tourist destinations in Thailand. Chiang Mai is known for its cool mountain atmosphere with good food and many cultural attractions. Krabi is known for its beautiful beaches with lots of opportunities for island hopping tours.

In this article, I will compare Chiang Mai and Krabi, focusing on their location, accommodations, nightlife, shopping, food, natural and cultural attractions. I enjoyed exploring both places and hope to give you the information you need to decide whether Chiang Mai or Krabi is better.

Is it better to stay in Chiang Mai or Krabi?

Chiang Mai and Krabi offer unique experiences, and I’m really glad I visited them both. I enjoyed my time in Krabi exploring different beaches, island hopping, enjoying the vibrant nightlife, and having some great rock climbing experiences.

I’m also fond of Chiang Mai because it’s rich in culture and history. It has a refreshing mountainous atmosphere, great Northern Thai food, many ancient temples, and many night markets.

Generally speaking, Krabi is a better place to visit if you want a sun, sand, or sea holiday. Krabi is Thailand’s postcard-perfect beach destination. It offers a great mix of beaches, inland activities, and cultural attractions.

Chiang Mai is a better location to visit if you’re going for culture, food, and mountain activities. It is the cultural heart of northern Thailand, giving a deeper sense of Thai culture. It is also cheaper than Krabi, less touristy, and offers cooler mountainous climates.

Another factor to consider when deciding which place is better is its location. Chiang Mai is a better base if you want to explore Northern Thailand like Pai or Chiang Rai. Krabi is a better place if you want to explore South Thailand like Phuket, Khao Sok National Park, or Koh Phi Phi.

If you have time, you can consider visiting both places in a single trip. They are located just 2 hours away by direct flight, or around 4 hours if connecting through Bangkok.

Chiang Mai and Krabi are located in different regions of Thailand, around 1500km apart. Chiang Mai is the major city of North Thailand, located along Ping River, around 700km north of Bangkok.

Krabi Province is a large region in South Thailand, around 800km south of Bangkok. Krabi is home to popular tourist destinations like Ao Nang, Railay, Hong Island, Koh Lanta, and Koh Phi Phi. It is close to Phang Nga Bay, Phuket, Khao Lak, and Khao Sok National Park.

Both Krabi and Chiang Mai are easily accessible by air and by road. Both have international airports, offering flights from numerous locations in Thailand and overseas. There are also long distance buses from other places like Bangkok to Krabi and Chiang Mai.

Additionally, Krabi can be reached by boat. There are boat connections from different islands on Andaman Sea to Krabi like Phuket, Koh Yao, or Koh Lipe.

Chiang Mai can also be reached by train. There are direct trains from Bangkok, or Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai. Krabi doesn’t have direct train service, but you can travel by train to nearby cities such as Surat Thani or Trang and continue to Krabi by other transport.

Accommodation

Krabi Hotel

Both Chiang Mai and Krabi have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. Chiang Mai has more mid-range boutique hotel options with Lanna-style decor and peaceful gardens. Krabi has resort-style accommodations.

Chiang Mai generally offers cheaper accommodations than Krabi. It has many long-term apartments and guest houses for digital nomads and long term travelers due to its low cost of living.

Both cities are extremely popular tourist destinations in Thailand, so hotels often fill up quickly during the high season, from November to May. If you’re traveling to these regions during peak season, make sure to book well in advance to have the best deals.

Nightlife

Both Chiang Mai and Krabi have a vibrant nightlife scene. They have different zones offering distinct nightlife experiences. In Chiang Mai, the Night Bazaar is the nightlife hub of the city. This area is busy at nightlifes, attracting many tourists to come to enjoy night markets, restaurants, bars, and shops.

Additionally, you can have more relaxing nightlife in the old town with some nice restaurants, live music spots, and bars scattered around the area. There are few night markets in the old town such as Sunday Walking street, Chang Phuak Market, and Chiang Mai gate Night Market.

If you want a bit more upscale atmosphere, you can visit the Nimman area, which is the expat hub of Chiang Mai. This area has more trendy restaurants and bars with a more international atmosphere.

The nightlife hub in Krabi is Ao Nang. This small area is packed with bars, clubs, restaurants, street stalls, and night markets. The nightlife here is often louder than in Chiang Mai, with bars playing more energetic music.

Within Krabi Province, Koh Phi Phi also has a vibrant nightlife with many bars and night clubs. For more relaxing nightlife with a local atmosphere, it is better to head to Krabi Town or Koh Lanta.

Shopping

Both areas have good shopping experiences where you can find typical Thai souvenirs. In my opinion, Chiang Mai offers a slightly better shopping scene.

Chiang Mai has some big shopping malls and a wide range of local markets. If you want an air-conditioned shopping experience, you can check out at One Nimman, Maya, and Central Chiang Mai malls.

There are a range of local markets and boutiques to buy handicrafts, Northern Thai food specialties, and artisan goods like silk, celadon ceramics, lacquerware, and silver. Famous ones are Warorot Market (Kad Luang), Sunday Walking Street Market, or White Market in Nimman.

Krabi doesn’t have big shopping malls, but a wide range of small shops and markets where you can buy typical tourist souvenirs like beachwear, jewelry, sarongs, flip-flops, and beach bags. Ao Nang and Krabi Town are good places to shop in Krabi Province. It is cheaper in Krabi Town.

Food

I personally prefer the food in Chiang Mai more compared to Krabi. I found it easier to find good restaurants with nice decorations and good food in Chiang Mai. The price is much cheaper. The cooking classes also offer more farming experiences and a relaxing atmosphere.

Chiang Mai is known for Lanna cuisine, which is a rich mix of local, earthy, and spicy flavors. Krabi’s food scene is influenced by the Southern Thai style, with many Halal food options.

If you are a fan of seafood, Krabi is a better place to go. Ao Nang has food catering for tourists, but there are some good authentic local places to eat in Krabi Town.

In addition to local Thai food and regional dishes, both Chiang Mai and Krabi have a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine, vegan, and vegetarian.

Cultural Attractions

Chiang Mai has a wealth of temples, festivals, arts, and hill tribe experiences that make it one of the best places to experience authentic Thai culture. Krabi is all about the beaches, but it also has some famous temples to explore.

As the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai is steeped in history and culture. The city is home to some of Thailand’s most iconic Buddhist temples, like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Phra Singh.

It is also home to two major cultural festivals, Yi Peng Lantern Festival (held in November) and the Songkran Festival. These festivals have traditional ceremonies, local performances, and religious rituals.

While Krabi doesn’t have as many temples as Chiang Mai, it still offers some beautiful temples such as Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua), which requires climbing over 1,200 steps to reach a viewpoint for the breathtaking views.

Beach Activities

Phra Nang Beach
Phra Nang Beach

Chiang Mai is located inland, surrounded by mountains and there are no beaches nearby. Krabi is obviously the better place to go for beaches.

The beaches in Krabi have stunning landscapes, with beautiful views of striking limestone karsts. Famous beaches in this region are Railay, Ao Nang, Tonsai, Phra Nang, Nopparat Thara, and Tub Kaek Beach. You can enjoy beach activities like swimming, sunbathing, watching the sunset, or fire shows.

Mountain Activities

Both Krabi and Chiang Mai have a wide range of mountain activities such as hiking or visiting an elephant sanctuary. Chiang Mai is surrounded by mountains, so it has more activities like visiting waterfalls, mountain biking, ziplining tours, or visiting a hillside village.

In Chiang Mai, you can hike on the Monk trail to visit Wat Doi Suthep. Doi Inthanon National Park also has many trails to explore to visit different ethnic villages and waterfalls.

In Krabi, the region is large, including both beaches, islands, and inlands. You can go hiking at Ngon Nak Nature Trail, hiking to Tiger cave temple, or visit the hot springs near Krabi Town.

There are also many rock climbing opportunities in Railay and Tonsai. These are some of the world’s most famous climbing destinations, so don’t miss out. You can take a course, or if you’re on a budget, there are many free similar experiences that you can do at your own pace.

Day trips

The day trips in Chiang Mai are all about inland trips. Krabi day trips offer a mix of inland activities and boat excursions to nearby islands. Both places offer great outdoor day trips.

A popular day trip from Chiang Mai is to Doi Inthanon National Park to trekking, village hillside village, waterfalls, local farms, the twin temples, and the highest point of Thailand. You can also take day trips to Elephant Sanctuary, Sticky Waterfalls, Chiang Rai, or Chiang Dao.

In Krabi, there are many day trips to places like Maya Beach on Koh Phi Phi, Hong island, Railay, or the Four Islands. For an inland trip, you can go hiking at Dragon’s Crest Mountain, visiting Tiger Cave temple, or Krabi Hot Springs.

Getting Around & Size

The main tourist areas of Chiang Mai are concentrated in a small area, in the old town, night bazaar, and Nimman. They are within a short drive from each other.

The key areas and islands in Krabi are far apart, making travel between them time-consuming. Ao Nang is around 30 minutes taxi drive from Krabi Town. It is a 10 minutes boat ride from Ao Nang to Railay, 1-2 hours boat ride from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi, and 2.5-3 from Ao Nang to Koh Lanta.

There are a wide range of taxi, tuktuk, and riding share services in Chiang Mai City Center and Ao Nang/ Krabi. I found it is very convenient to get around by Grab Taxi, Bolt, and InDrive. If you’re a confident driver, you can consider renting a scooter, which gives you more freedom to explore each region.

So, you have it, my comparison between Chiang Mai and Krabi. These two places have totally different atmospheres and in different parts of Thailand. Overall, Krabi is the better place to visit if you want a beach holiday with white sandy beaches, island hopping, and stunning limestone landscape.

Chiang Mai is a better location for those who want cooler mountainous atmospheres, lots of cultural attractions, good food, and affordable cost of living. Chiang Mai is a better base to explore North Thailand and Krabi is a better base to explore South Thailand.
